‎OPINION ON THE CONSTITUTIONAL POWER OF THE MILITARY TO TRY AND EXECUTE THE ASSASSINS OF THE PRESIDENT‎

‎Washington 1865. 16pp disbound light rubberstamp Good. Speed was a Kentuckian appointed as Lincoln's Attorney General in 1864. Though a Border State moderate he quickly became an all-out Union man with the outbreak of war. Here he opines that trial of the alleged presidential assassins should occur by military commission rather than civil courts: the law of war as part of the law of nations has implicitly been adopted in the Constitution. "When lawless wretches become so impudent and powerful as not to be controlled and governed by the ordinary tribunals of a country armies are called out and the laws of war invoked." The laws of war do not require different treatment of "secret active enemies" and "open active enemies" who would be tried by military tribunal. Under these circumstances the alleged assassins may be tried by military court without a jury. FIRST EDITION. Monaghan 739. II Harv. Law Cat. 634. Not in LCP. unknown‎

<br/>FIRST EDITION. Monaghan 739. II Harv. Law Cat. 634. Not in LCP. unknown books‎

‎SPEED John 1552 1629.‎

‎"A Map of Virginia and Maryland".‎

‎London: Bassett 1676. Single sheet 17 x 22 inches Good margins light offsetting foxing along edge Speed's handsomely engraved work is one of the earliest English maps of the area and one of the first to demarcate the borders of colonial Virginia and Maryland. From A Prospect of the Most Important Parts of the World the map is beautifully embellished with an strikingly elegant title cartouche the Royal English coat-of-arms a fine compass rose and rhumb lines. The accuracy of the map allows you to see the terrain of the settlements Native American tribes and of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This is a map which heavily focuses on the earliest of the American colonies. In 1607 Jamestown became the first colony established as part of 'the New World' by English settlers and traders. Officially the names of these two states stem from the honors of Queen Henrietta Maria the wife of King Charles I; and the 'Virgin Queen' Elizabeth I. Just three years before the publication of Speed's map Augustine Herrman had conducted the first thorough surveys of Maryland at the behest of Lord Baltimore. Speed's was one of the first maps to adopt this groundbreaking cartography. However in general outline Speed still followed the prototype of Captain John Smith who conducted the first European survey of Chesapeake Bay. Speed's map "is the last major derivative of the Smith map and it is unique as an example of the transition from one basic prototype map to another. The delineation of the land area follows Smith while the toponymic prototype was the Herrman map of 1673." Verner "A Map of Virginia and Maryland" is beautifully uncolored showing the fine impression in its rare raw state. Colorists frequently try to improve the map by adding color. However this may potentially be done by amateurs. The map should always be left uncolored; thus in the same format it was studied by Speed and his contemporaries. The name John Speed is synonymous with excellent English cartography. In fact he is arguably the most famous of all English cartographers from the 17th century and on. Born in 1552 in the village of Farndon southern Welsh border of Chestershire. As a young man he began his career as part of his father's tailoring business. However he grew tired of this path and sought a career elsewhere. Speed took the risk of relocating south settling in London around 1582. His extensive knowledge of history and the arts led him to join the Society of Antiquaries where his popularity and passion was widely regarded. Speed fell into the liking of Sir Fulke Greenville and soon Greenville a man of great means became his benefactor. He secure Speed with a position in Customs Service which allowed the young man to make a living as well as having the freedom to pursue his other interests - one of which we know is cartography. In his successful career in cartography Speed published two superbly renowned atlases: 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' in 1612 the first Atlas devoted to the British Isles; and 'A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World' in 1627. The latter was the first world atlas to be published by an Englishman and it began to set a path for future English cartography. Until then the Dutch were heavily dominating the map market. This large and ambitious undertaking from which the 'Map of Virginia and Maryland' comes from was an extension from the Theatre - adding 28 new maps to the work - all from an English perspective. ‎Speed John 1552 1629‎

‎'Cambridgeshire described with the division of the hundreds'‎

‎London: John Sudbury & George Humble 1676. London: John Sudbury & George Humble. Speed John 1552-1629 Single sheet 15 x 20 inches full margins showing the plate mark two repaired tears on bottom margin an inch either side of the crease line condition commensurate with age. An appealing uncolored engraved map of Cambridge stretching the border with Huntingdonshire in the west to Suffolk in the east. There is an expanded plan of the historic university town of Cambridge in the North West. The map was printed as part of Speeds revered atlas 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine'. The map was part of the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale as part of 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain' the work for which Speed is best known. This celebrated Atlas contained the first set of county maps consistently attempting to show the boundaries of territorial divisions and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-a notable contribution to British topography. After 15 years assembling the Atlas it was published to immediate success: three new editions and issues appeared during Speed's lifetime and the work remained popular into the eighteenth century. Indeed the maps of this Atlas remain one of the most popular with map collectors around the world. John Speed was born in the Cheshire village of Farndon and from his youth pursued his father's profession of tailoring. He later moved to London to continue this trade though Speed's real passions lay elsewhere namely in the fields of antiquity and cartography. He joined the Society of Antiquaries where his enthusiasm soon attracted the attention of notables such as William Camden and Sir Fulke Greville. In 1596 Greville provided Speed with a full time allowance to write a 'Historie of Great Britaine'. It was during this project that Speed decided to add a cartographic supplement to the work and it was from this that his famous atlas 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' was born. The individual maps are the best known and among the most sought-after of all county maps. The map of Cambridge was particularly desirable as shown by the fact it was one of the few county maps selected to be printed as individual sheets as well as part of Atlas. The maps themselves were derived from the best and most up- to-date sources available. However Speed also made innovations of his own - introducing town plans such as the one of Cambridge seen on this map. This map is also decorated with two vignettes of scholars of the university as well as the coats of arms of the colleges of Cambridge University and local nobles. Also included is a decorative strap-work title cartouche astride the royal coat of arms surrounded by a lion and unicorn. The overall effect is to produce very decorative attractive and informative map. Description prepared for Arader Galleries by Jack Rogers Eton College Oxford University Geography Undergraduate . ‎Speed John 1552 1629‎

‎'THE KINGDOME OF SCOTLAND'‎

‎London: John Sudbury & George Humble London: John Sudbury & George Humble. Speed John 1552-1629. Single sheet 15 x 20 inches full margins showing the plate mark pin sized hole lower right margin. An appealing uncolored engraved map of Scotland stretching from the coast of Ireland in the south west to an inset of the Orkney Islands in the north east. It is this expanded view of the Orkney Islands which stands this map apart from other maps of Scotland existing at the time such as Mercator's. In this 1676 edition figures of highlanders and townspeople have replaced the portraits of the Scottish Royal family that appeared on earlier editions. This was evidence of the strong anti-monarchic public sentiment that existed in the political and religious unrest after English Civil war 1642-1651. The Royal standard has also been removed to be replaced with the Saltire. Fascinatingly the checked clothes worn by the vignettes are considered to be one of the earliest depictions of tartan. The map was printed as part of Speeds revered atlas 'Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine'. The map was part of the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale as part of 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain' the work for which Speed is best known. This celebrated Atlas contained the first detailed maps of the provinces of Ireland the first set of county maps consistently attempting to show the boundaries of territorial divisions and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-a notable contribution to British topography. After 15 year assembling the Atlas is was published to immediate success: three new editions and issues of each appeared during Speed's lifetime and the work remained popular into the eighteenth century. The work has to be one of the most influential atlases of the British Isles ever published. It was during this project that Speed decided to add a cartographic supplement to the work and it was from this that his famous atlas 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' was born. This particular map is a fine example of the array of illustrative features and cartographic detail for which Speed a well-known legend of English cartography is so famous. This has led the map to become widely regarded as the most decorative early map of Scotland. We are unaware of any 1676 edition of this map in original color. When it was published it would have been studied by nobles and officials without color and we feel this same experience is strongly preferable to other maps with more recent coloring. The aesthetic exquisiteness of this map is also down to the Dutch engraver; Jodocus Hondius whose fine decorative strapwork ships sea monsters and calligraphy all prominently feature. We are delighted to be able to offer you what is one of the earliest and most famous maps of Scotland. ‎SPEED John c. 1552 1629‎

‎A Map of New England and New York‎

‎London: Thomas Basset & Richard Chiswell 1676. Copper-engraved map with original outline colour and the title and margins double-ruled in red. An extraordinary copy of Speed's map of New England and New York with magnificent original colour and with the title and margins double-ruled in red indicating a noble English provenance. This highly decorative map is luxuriously embellished with original colour and its title and margins are double ruled in red a magnificent and unique custom generally reserved for special presentation pieces intended for English noble patrons. John Speed the leading London cartographer of the Baroque period devised his interpretation of the Jansson-Visscher sequence of New England and New York maps shortly after the English managed to definitively supplant the Dutch from control of New York and New Jersey both provinces being renamed after British places. The major settlements of Boston New Plymouth Massachusetts New York New Castle Delaware New Haven Stamford Connecticut and Ft. Orange modern Albany are named; however this map predates the founding of Philadelphia in 1682. The outline of coastal New England is based on the work of earlier English cartographers the most prominent being Captain John Smith. Long Island the Hudson Valley New Jersey and the Delaware Basin are based on Dutch seacharts. Speed advanced his portrayal of the head of Chesapeake Bay and the delineation of the Susquehanna River from earlier maps in the sequence taking into account the latest English information. Curiously the interior of the region outside of the Hudson and Connecticut Valleys is shown to be wildly misunderstood. The native tribes that occupied the interior and the French who controlled the St. Lawrence Valley Quebec to the north generally did not express pleasure upon encountering foreign explorers and this ensured that very little information regarding these regions was available to either English or Dutch cartographers. Lake Champlain or the "Lake of Irocoisiensis" is located far to the east of its true location and the delineation of the St. Lawrence River is based on pure speculation. The enigmatic interior is however graced by the finely-engraved presence of woodland animals such as a bear a deer an otter and several beavers. The title cartouche in the lower right is elegantly surmounted by the Royal arms of England. ‎A Mapp of the Sommer Ilands‎

‎London: Are to be sold by George Humble in Pops-head Alley against the exchainge 1631. once called the Bermudas 1631. Engraved map. A map showing Bermuda and other Caribbean islands after a 1622 map by Richard Norwood. This was the first English printed map of Bermuda and showed the island’s divisions into tribes and shares for the first time. The Bermudas were then called the Somer Islands after Admiral George Somer an English navigator who was forced to land there in 1609 while on a relief mission to the English colony at Jamestown. His crew lived there for ten months and laid the foundations of the English colony. They eventually built new ships and continued to Jamestown where they provided vital support to the colonists there. Somers died on Bermuda a year later on his return journey. Richard Norwood was brought to Bermuda by the Somer Islands Company in 1613 in an attempt to adapt a diving bell he had invented for pearl diving. Although this venture failed he was commissioned to survey the island group. All the land outside of the Company holdings was divided it into eight areas called tribes; these were then subdivided into 25 acre allotments called shares. Individuals were not meant to own more than ten shares in any given tribe. John Speed 1552-1629 was the outstanding cartographer of his age. His ‘Theatre of Great Britain’ first published in 1611 or 1612 was the first atlas of Great Britain: Speed prepared the maps himself about two years before they were published. This map is from the ‘Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World’ produced in collaboration with Speed to accompany the ‘Theatre’ and published in a joint edition by George Humble in 1631. Many of the maps were anglicized versions of works by Dutch makers who introduced the carte-à-figure style with borders of figures in local costume and city views. Chubb XXV. Speed’s ‘Prospect’ is the earliest world atlas to be published by an Englishman. It includes the world map ‘A New and Accurat Map of the World’ showing California as an island. Other maps include: the four continents Greece the Roman Empire Germany Bohemia France the Low Countries Spain Italy Hungary Denmark Poland Persia the Ottoman Empire China Tartary and Bermuda. Together with the ‘The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine’ Speed’s atlas consists of 89 double-page maps. It followed the model of Ortelius’s ‘Theatrum Orbis Terrarum’ - first published in English in 1606 - in its title and its format with map sheets backed by historical and geographical texts and gazetteers of place names. “This was the earliest English attempt at producing an atlas on a grand scale with the first detailed maps of the provinces of Ireland the first set of county maps consistently attempting to show the boundaries of territorial divisions and the first truly comprehensive set of English town plans-a notable contribution to British topography. Perhaps as many as 50 of the 73 towns had not previously been mapped and about 51 of the plans were probably Speed’s own work. “In 1606 Speed might have been helped by his son John in surveying towns. A balance is struck between the modern and historical with information placed on the edges of the maps about antiquarian remains and sites and vignettes of famous battles together with arms of princes and nobles. This additional information is one of the ‘Theatre’’s most significant contributions. Scotland is covered in less detail as Timothy Pont was surveying there. “Individual maps for the ‘Theatre’ were prepared from about 1602 plates were engraved by Jodocus Hondius-noted for his skills in decoration-from 1607 George Humble was granted a privilege to print the ‘Theatre’ for twenty-one years from 1608 and the ‘Theatre’ and ‘History’ were published together in 1611-1612. They were an immediate success: three new editions and issues of each appeared during Speed’s lifetime and a miniature version was first published about 1619-1620. The maps in the ‘Theatre’ became the basis for subsequent folio atlases until the mid-eighteenth century. By 1625 Speed had lost his sight. Nevertheless in 1627 he published ‘A Prospect of the most Famous Parts of the World’ which shared a title-page with the 1627 edition of the Theatre. ‘The Prospect’ the earliest world atlas by an Englishman’ though not the first to be published in England†Sarah Bendall for DNB. On the title-page the atlas’s first owner Nicolai von Bodeck 1611-1676 has recorded buying the book in London in 1632 shortly after it was available to the public and also the year of publication of the Savery portrait of Speed which appears as the frontispiece in this example. Sudbury and Humble one of the earliest print and booksellers in the City had a shop in Popes Head Alley where Bodeck presumably bought this book. Bodeck was born in Danzig and studied in Strassburg England and Holland between 1628 and 1632; he was an avid book collector with such a well-known interest in maps that a map by Willem Hondius of eastern Prussia was dedicated to him. The family’s library was dispersed at auction in Danzig in December 1695.  Two hundred years later the atlas was a valued book in the library of William Morris 1834-1896 celebrated artist designer author and visionary socialist. In his own manuscript catalogue of his library compiled in 1876 and now at the Yale Center for British Art Morris records that he paid one pound and 15 shillings for this example of Speed’s ‘Prospect’ and ‘Theatre’. In a second manuscript catalogue now at the Bridwell Library Southern Methodist University which was compiled in about 1890 the book has been entered with “XXX†next to it marking it as one of Morris’ most prized possessions. After Morris’ death the Speed was one of the books acquired by Richard Bennett from Manchester who then consigned it and many others to auction at Sotheby’s in December 1898. It was purchased at that auction by Walter Leighton of J. and J. Leighton booksellers on behalf of Emery Walker Morris’s great friend. They first met in 1883 and in 1888 joined Walter Crane and others in founding the Arts and Crafts Exhibition Society. “Among the subjects in which they were both deeply interested was the art of typography then at a low ebb. Out of the lecture on printing and illustration which Walker delivered at the Arts and Crafts Exhibition in 1888 and the seminal essay on typography which he wrote and Morris expanded for the exhibition catalogue arose the Kelmscott Press the first of the great private presses which they established early in 1891 in modest premises close to Morris’s Kelmscott House†Cockerell. ‎London: are to be sold in popes head Alley against the Exchnage by I.S. and George Humble cum privilegio 1626. 1626 but 1627. Double-page engraved map with fine hand-colour in full. For this map Abraham Goos drew “on his engraving of North America in 1624 and the Briggs of 1625 to depict California as an island once more. He was the only Dutch cartographer to do so for some considerable time. There are five fewer place-names in California than the Briggs. He includes a similar faint northwest coastline and Strait of Anian. ‘Brasil’ and ‘Frisland’ remnants from the sixteenth century make a stubborn appearance in the North Atlantic. The fledgling colonies of Plymouth in New England and ‘Iames Citti’ in Virginia are both recognised. Decorating the whole are three attractive borders. The two sides illustrated the natives of the continent the left bears those of the north and the right those of the south. Despite the map’s obvious attention to the English presence in North America none of the eight towns represented in the third is from that part. This is owing to the lack of any contemporary views to draw on†Burden. John Speed is perhaps the most famous single figure in the early history of the English map trade. He was a member of the Merchant Taylors' Company made a freeman of the city in September 1580 and later Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries. By training he was probably a rolling-press printer but by interest he was a historian and Queen Elizabeth granted him a sinecure in the Customs House to give him the opportunity to pursue these interests. His earliest cartographic publications were historical; in 1595 he published a wall map of the Holy Land ‘Canaan as it was Possessed both in Abraham and Israels Dayes’ a two-sheet map of The Invasions of England and Ireland with all their Civill Warres since the Conquest’ 1601 and a wall map of England Wales and Ireland showing the same information 1603-1604. In 1611 he prepared two Bible maps the larger inserted in folio editions of the great King James Bible the smaller in octavo printings; Speed also secured a privilege dated 31st October 1610 to ensure that the map was inserted in every copy of the Bible sold a lucrative arrangement that the Stationers' Company eventually felt impelled to buy out from his heirs. Speed always considered his ‘History of Great Britaine’ 1611 his major work but his reputation was established by the companion atlas volume ‘Theatre of the Empire of great Britaine’ published in 1612 the first printed atlas of the British Isles. The earliest map prepared was ‘The County Palatine of Chester’ 1604 but the death of the engraver William Rogers meant that Speed's publishers had to turn to Jodocus Hondius an Amsterdam engraver to prepare the maps. The atlas was completed in 1612; the maps are notable for the decorative elements included evidence of Speed's interest in antiquities and most have inset town-plans the first series of printed town-plans of the British Isles and were issued with descriptive English text printed on the verso. In the hands of different publishers there were numerous editions to 1676 with text; later printings into the 1770s were issued without text. Towards the end of his career Speed also prepared a world atlas: the ‘Prospect of the most Famous Parts of the World’ 1627 the first world atlas compiled by an Englishman and published in England although the maps were engraved in Amsterdam using Dutch models. Again this was printed with English text on the verso and reprinted thereafter. While early editions are rarer perhaps the most important edition was the 1676 printing which added newly prepared English maps of New England Virginia the Carolinas Barbados and Jamaica. Speed's publishers also prepared two pocket atlases colloquially called “miniature Speeds†reproducing the ‘Theatre’ and ‘Prospect’ on a smaller less expensive format. The county atlas ‘England Wales and Ireland: . their several Counties abridged’ first appeared in 1627 although there is an earlier proof version from about 1620; the ‘A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World’ appeared in 1646; both were reprinted in several editions up to 1675. However Speed himself probably had little creative contribution to either atlas.
