Les raisons de leur venue tiennent souvent aux événements historiques qui ont secoué ces pays, et dans ce cas, leur voyage s'est souvent fait dans des conditions dramatiques : réfugiées des guerres de la péninsule Indochinoise, du génocide Khmer rouge, boat-people... Elles sont maintenant de plus en plus liées à la pauvreté, à l'immigration économique.
