Pimentel Francisco 1823 1893
Cuadro descriptivo y comparativo de las lenguas indigenas de Mexico
2 Volumes. lii3954 pages; vi427 pages. Octavo 8 1/4" x 5 1/2" volume one rebound in red leather with gilt lettering to spine; volume two original quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. First edition.

The first Mexican linguist worthy of this name is Francisco Pimentel in the second half of the nineteenth century. He attempted to systematize what was known until then about the Indian languages of Mexico. His work is the starting-point for the development of a more scientific approach to linguistic studies on Mesoamerican languages. A scholar versed in European typology and comparative linguistic studies of the nineteenth century Pimentel is clearly indebted to his predecessor the Spaniard Lorenzo Hervas y Panduro as well as Wilhelm von Humboldt Friedrich Schlegel Ernest Renan Jacob Grimm and others. His work on linguistic classification in Mexico unlike that of Orozco y Berra was as up to date as that of any of his North American contemporaries. The second edition of Pimentel 1874 had considerable influence on subsequent opinion concerning the classification of native languages in Mexico and Mesoamerica generally and his work was heeded by Powell and other scholars in North America. Pimentel claimed to be "the first to present a scientific classification of Mexican Indian languages based on comparative philology". He proposed several families that were accurate as well as a few that were not so accurate including Uto-Aztecan with nine subgroup members; Costeno with Mutsun; Mixe with Zoque; Mixtec Zapoteco. Pimentel was relatively successful in his attempt to establish family relationships. Interestingly his methods were those standard in European linguistic studies; in particular he emphasized grammatical evidence but also utilized basic vocabulary. Although Pimentel favored grammatical evidence he rejected the generally held notion of the time maintained by most scholars since Duponeau that all American Indian languages share the same morphological type.

Condition:

Volume one. Pimentel Francisco 1823 1893
Memoria sobre las causas que han originado la situacion actual de la raza indígena de México y medios de remediarla
241 pages. Octavo 8 1/4" x 5" bound in half leather with gilt lettering to spine and stiff boards. First edition.

In the mid 1800's Mexico's population was forty percent Indian. Most had a subsistence economy which was out side the nation's main stream and condemned the native population to poverty and malnutrition. The Mexican government began to divide the communal lands of the Indians into farms ejidos which they opposed. Liberals such as Pimentel thought that the Indian was an obstacle to progress of the nation. The Mexican intellectuals thought one of the best ways to integrate the natives was to encourage European immigration and to eliminate the indigenous languages. Pimentel in his Political economy applied to landed property in Mexico 1866 asked "Who is to blame for this laziness improvidence and squandering of our poor class" To which he answered the same day Indian laborer. Two years earlier Pimentel's Report on the causes that have led to the current situation of the indigenous race and the means to remedy the situation gives a concise history of the Indian and discusses solutions to what the intellectuals considered a problem. This is one of the fundamental works which began to frame the ruling establishment's actions toward the indigenous populations and which eventually led them to assist the side with the revolutionists in 1910.

Condition:

Previous owner's name on front end paper boards and edges rubbed and chipped corners bumped else a good to very good copy of a scarce item. Pineda Vicente
Author: Pineda Vicente from the library of Professor George M Foster Historia De Las Sublevaciones Indigenas Habidas En El Estado De Chiapas. Gramatica De La Lengua Tzel - Tal Que Habla La Generalidad De Los Habitantes De Los Pueblos Que Quedan al Oriente y al Noreste Del Estado y Diccionario De La Misma
2 parts: 340 pages with fold out table; 1433 errata pages. Octavo 8 ¾ " x 6 ½ " bound in cloth with gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition.

Tzeltal is a member of the Mayan family of languages and is spoken mainly in the State of Chiapas Mexico. Some of the earliest written documents in Tzeltal are Fray Domingo de Ara's Vocabulario de Lengua Tzeldal Según el Orden de Copanabastla which is believed to have been written in 1571 and Manuel Díez's 1675 work Conciones en Lingua Tzeldaica. There are currently at least six different dialects of Tzeltal spoken in Chiapas: Northern Ocosingo Bachajon West Central Tenejapa Cancuc East Central Oxchuc Chanal Amatenango Southern Aguacatenango Villa las Rosas Teopisca South Western Copanaguastla extinct Comitan and the nearly extinct South Eastern Trinitaria Lagos de Montebello. However this classification scheme is partial at best - each town where Tzeltal is spoken in the highlands of Chiapas has significant dialectical variation with some towns even having two or more "sub-dialects" spoken within town boundaries. Vincente Pineda's work includes both the grammar and dictionary of the Tzeltal.

George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.

Condition:

Foster's stamp on title and acquiry date 4/7/47 on front paste down gilt on spine totally faded title soiled page edges rough some pages have minor repairs.
This volume illustrates more than 500 terms of Da Vinci?s anatomy from the Windsor Royal Collection papers and contributes to deepening our knowledge of Leonardo. The study examines for the first time Leonardo?s use of Latin and reflects on the richness of his lexicon, ranging from the Greek-Latin tradition (both Latin and Vulgar) to the words of everyday language, in his attempt to name parts of the body that had not been previously studied.
