br. Ancora un libro sul corpo: perché? Perché al corpo oggi è assegnato un ruolo di primo piano nella scena della cultura, della politica, dei vissuti individuali. Ma questo protagonismo non lo ha reso più trasparente, ossia più comprensibile nel suo significato, anzi. Come accade con le realtà che si osservano da una distanza troppo ravvicinata, il corpo sembra perdere le giuste proporzioni sotto la lente della medicina, che rischia di considerarlo come semplice organismo - corpo fisico - e dell'estetica, che lo guarda come immagine, pura apparenza. Nell'uno e nell'altro caso, il corpo diventa un qualcosa da sottoporre a controllo e da modificare, nel tentativo di sottrarsi ai limiti del corpo paziente, in modo da dilatare infinitamente il desiderio individuale, di salute, di giovinezza, di bellezza, di vita o di morte. Ma la radicale concentrazione sul corpo porta inevitabilmente alla riduzione del mondo, che finisce per circoscriversi alle esigenze e ai vissuti soggettivi del solo corpo: da qui l'impoverimento delle relazioni personali. Occorre pertanto un'etica del corpo per saper accettare quella sua passività non evitabile o, meglio detto, per saper trasformare la passività in pazienza. Solo attraverso la pazienza, si riesce a decifrare il senso della vulnerabilità e addirittura a imparare da essa. Un'etica del corpo diventa pertanto anche una pedagogia del corpo, guida a quella realizzazione di sé inseparabile dalla crescita nella libertà responsabile.

About the Book:- PATTERNS OF CULTURE, an anthropological work published in 1934 that became one of the most widely read pieces of social science ever written in the United States. Its author, Ruth Benedict, did no fieldwork, but wrote evocatively about cultural diversity. She helped persuade a generation of Americans that members of their own society were generally too quick to judge negatively the values and practices of people different from themselves. Patterns of Culture did more than any other work to popularize "cultural relativism," the notion that the "good" is not absolute and universal, but relative to a particular culture. About the Author:- Ruth Fulton Benedict (1887–1948) was an American anthropologist and folklorist. She was born in New York City, attended Vassar College and graduated in 1909. After studying anthropology at the New School of Social Research under Elsie Clews Parsons, she entered graduate studies at Columbia University in 1921, where she studied under Franz Boas. She received her PhD and joined the faculty in 1923. Margaret Mead, with whom she shared a romantic relationship, and Marvin Opler, were among her students and colleagues. Benedict was President of the American Anthropological Association and was also a prominent member of the American Folklore Society. She became the first woman to be recognized as a prominent leader of a learned profession. She can be viewed as a transitional figure in her field, redirecting both anthropology and folklore away from the limited confines of culture-trait diffusion studies and towards theories of performance as integral to the interpretation of culture. She studied the relationships between personality, art, language and culture, insisting that no trait existed in isolation or self-sufficiency, a theory which she championed in her 1934 book Patterns of Culture.
