Picture Writing from Ancient Southern Mexico: Mixtec Place Signs and Maps
xv348 pages with maps charts drawings illustrations figures plates Appendixes bibliography and indexes. Quarto 12" x 9 1/4" bound in original publisher's gold cloth with red lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Volume 124 in The Civilization of American Indian series. First edition. Among the greatest of the pre-Columbian American artists were the Mixtec Indians of Mexico who recorded much of their history in picture manuscripts. Long before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors the Mixtecs were preserving the histories and genealogies of their ruling families by means of picture writing. Many of the manuscripts were lost or were destroyed by the invading Europeans. Those that survived are invaluable to students of of pre-Columbian art history anthropology and ethnology. This richly illustrated book presents a comprehensive study of the surviving Mixtec manuscripts of the pre-Hispanic and early Colonial periods including an analysis of the methods used to recount history and the relationship of the pictorial signs to the Mixtec language. Perhaps most significant the author clarifies the aspect of Mixtec manuscripts which has thus far been most puzzling: the "place signs" or pictures which represent the names of place. She discusses in detail the composition of these signs and the methods by which they can be deciphered. sixteenth-century maps have proved to be an invaluable aid in place-sign decipherment. Several maps from the Pacfic Coast region of the Mixtecs are analyzed including the hitherto unpublished Lienzo of Jicayan one of the handsomest of the early Colonial Mixtec maps. Condition: Dust jacket sunned and price clipped else a better than very good copy in like jacket. University of Oklahoma Press hardcover

Between Two Stools: Scatology and Its Representations in English Literature, Chaucer to Swift
8vo, pp.304. Between two stools investigates the representation of scatology - humorous, carnivalesque, satirical, damning and otherwise - in English literature from the middle ages to the eighteenth century. Smith contends that the 'two stools' stand for two broadly distinctive attitudes towards scatology. The first is a carnivalesque, merry, even hearty disposition, typified by the writings of Chaucer and Shakespeare. The second is self-disgust, an attitude characterised by withering misanthropy and hypochondria. Smith demonstrates how the combination of high and low cultures manifests the capacity to run canonical and carnivalesque together so that sanctioned and civilised artefacts and scatological humour frequently co-exist in the works under discussion, evidence of an earlier culture's aptitude (now lost) to occupy a position between two stools. Of interest to cultural and literary historians, this ground-breaking study testifies to the arrival of scatology as an academic subject, at the same time recognising that it remains if not outside, then at least at the margins of conventional scholarship.

Decolonizing Methodologies : Research and Indigenous Peoples
ix, 208 pages ; 22 cm bibliographical references and index. "From the vantage point of the colonized, the term 'research' is inextricably linked with European colonialism; the way in which scientific research has been implicated in the worst excesses of imperialism remains a powerful remembered history for many of the world's colonized peoples. Here, an indigenous researcher issues a clarion call for the decolonization of research methods. In the first part of the book, the author critically examines the historical and philosophical base of Western research. Extending the work of Foucault, she explores the intersections of imperialism, knowledge and research; en route she provides a history of knowledge from the Enlightenment to postcoloniality. The second part of the book meets an urgent demand: people who are carrying out their own research projects need literature which validates their frustrations in dealing with various Western paradigms. In setting an agenda for planning and implementing indigenous research, the author shows how such programmes are part of the wider project of reclaiming control over indigenous ways of knowing and being." óPublisher. / Contents: 1. Die Schöpfung des Menschen; Vorlesungen über die Abstammung des Menschen. Karl Snell.
Sobrino Triana, Roxana:
Cuba: realidades e imaginarios lingüísticos. Hispano-Americana ; Band 75.
In very good condition.
