JOHN F. M‘LENNAN
PRIMITIVE MARRIAGE: AN INQUIRY INTO THE ORIGIN OF THE FORM OF CAPTURE IN MARRIAGE CEREMONIES [Hardcover]
About the Book:- The Chief sources of information regarding the early history of civil society are first, the study of races in their primitive condition; and, second, the study of the symbols employed by advanced nations in the constitution or exercise of civil rights. From these studies pursued together, we obtain to a large extent, the power of classifying social phenomena as more or less archaic and thus of connecting and arranging in their order the stages of human advancement. The book is devided into the following chapters, namely, Legal Symbolism and Primitive Life, The form of capture in Marriage Ceremonies, The Origin of the form of capture, On the Prevalence of the Practice of capturing Wives, de facto, Of the rule against Marriage between members of the same Tribe, On the state of Hostility, Exogamy: its Origin-Comparative Archaism of Exogamy and Endogamy, Ancient System of Kinship, and their Influence on the Structure of the Primitive Groups, The Decay of Exogamy. About the Autor:-John Ferguson McLennan FRSE LLD (14 October 1827 – 16 June 1881), was a Scottish advocate, social anthropologist and ethnologist. He was born in Inverness, the son of John McLennan, an insurance agent, and his wife, Jessie Ross. He was educated in that city, then studied law at King's College, Aberdeen, graduating M.A. in 1849. In 1865, McLennan published Primitive Marriage. In it he argued from symbolic and ceremonial forms of bride kidnapping (see also Types of marriage). His ideas had been partially anticipated by Johann Jakob Bachofen, writing in 1861 on matriarchy, but were independent. McLennan developed from ethnographic data a social evolutionist theory of marriage, and also of systems of kinship according to natural laws. He rejected patriarchal society as an early stage, arguing in favour of agnation as a more basic evolutionary point; he proposed an early model of social groups, a war band mainly male, practicing female infanticide and acquiring female sexual partners, with promiscuity and matrilineality salient features. MARIA MONTESSORI, FREDERIC TABER COOPER(Tr.)
PEDAGOGICAL ANTHROPOLOGY [Hardcover]
About the Book:-The Present Volume comprises the lectures given by me in the university of Rome, during a period of four years. The Volume contains the pictures used in the form of lantern slides to illustrate the lectures, pictures taken in part from various works of research mentioned in this volume. Acknowledgment is gratefull made to the scientists and scholars whose work is thus referred to. The first chapter, which is very long, contains an outline of general biology and at the same time biological and social generalisations concerning man considered from our point of view as educators and thus furnishes a complete organic conception which the remainder of the book proceeds to analyse one part at a time; the chapter on the pelvis on the other hand is exceedingly short but is completely covers the principles relating to this particular part, because they lend themselves to such condensed treatment. About the Author:- Maria Tecla Artemisia Montessori (1870 –1952) was an Italian physician and educator best known for the philosophy of education that bears her name, and her writing on scientific pedagogy. At an early age, Montessori enrolled in classes at an all-boys technical school, with hopes of becoming an engineer. She soon had a change of heart and began medical school at the Sapienza University of Rome, where she graduated with honors in 1896. Her educational method is in use today in many public and private schools globally. Frederic Taber Cooper Ph.D. (1864 –1937) was an American editor and writer. Cooper was born in New York City, graduated from Harvard University in 1886 and obtained an LL.B. from Columbia University in 1887. On November 29, 1887, he married Edith Redfield in New York. Edith's father Amasa A. Redfield was a New York attorney and author. In 1888, he was admitted to the New York Bar, but promptly abandoned the practice of law. Returning to Columbia, he obtained an A.M. in 1891, serving as an associate instructor of Latin until 1894. In 1895, Columbia awarded him a Ph.D. and he became an associate professor of Latin and Sanskrit at New York University until 1902. Professor Cooper was the editor of various periodicals, including The New York Commercial Advertiser (1898-1904), The Forum (1907-1909), and for a short time of the New York Globe. He died in New London, Connecticut, shortly after returning from a trip to Europe on May 20, 1937. Edward B. Tylor
ANTHROPOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF MAN AND CIVILIZATION [Hardcover]
About the Book:-The present volume is an introduction to Anthropology, rather than a summary of all it teaches. It does not deal with strictly technical matter, out of the reach of readers who have received or are receiving, the ordinary higher English education. Thus except to student trained in anatomy the minute modern researches as to distinction of races by skull measurements and the like would be useless. Much care has been taken to make the chapters on the various branches of the science sound as far as they go, but the more advanced work must be left to special student. About the Author:-Edward Burnett Tylor FRAI (2 October 1832 – 2 January 1917) was an English anthropologist, the founder of cultural anthropology. Tylor's ideas typify 19th-century cultural evolutionism. In his works Primitive Culture (1871) and Anthropology (1881), he defined the context of the scientific study of anthropology, based on the evolutionary theories of Charles Lyell. He believed that there was a functional basis for the development of society and religion, which he determined was universal. Tylor maintained that all societies passed through three basic stages of development: from savagery, through barbarism to civilization.[2] Tylor is a founding figure of the science of social anthropology, and his scholarly works helped to build the discipline of anthropology in the nineteenth century.[3] He believed that "research into the history and prehistory of man could be used as a basis for the reform of British society. Tylor's first publication was a result of his 1856 trip to Mexico with Christy. His notes on the beliefs and practices of the people he encountered were the basis of his work Anahuac: Or Mexico and the Mexicans, Ancient and Modern (1861), published after his return to England. The Title 'ANTHROPOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF MAN AND CIVILIZATION written/authored/edited by Edward B. Tylor', published in the year 2021. RUTH BENEDICT
PATTERNS OF CULTURE [Hardcover]
About the Book:- PATTERNS OF CULTURE, an anthropological work published in 1934 that became one of the most widely read pieces of social science ever written in the United States. Its author, Ruth Benedict, did no fieldwork, but wrote evocatively about cultural diversity. She helped persuade a generation of Americans that members of their own society were generally too quick to judge negatively the values and practices of people different from themselves. Patterns of Culture did more than any other work to popularize "cultural relativism," the notion that the "good" is not absolute and universal, but relative to a particular culture. About the Author:- Ruth Fulton Benedict (1887–1948) was an American anthropologist and folklorist. She was born in New York City, attended Vassar College and graduated in 1909. After studying anthropology at the New School of Social Research under Elsie Clews Parsons, she entered graduate studies at Columbia University in 1921, where she studied under Franz Boas. She received her PhD and joined the faculty in 1923. Margaret Mead, with whom she shared a romantic relationship, and Marvin Opler, were among her students and colleagues. Benedict was President of the American Anthropological Association and was also a prominent member of the American Folklore Society. She became the first woman to be recognized as a prominent leader of a learned profession. She can be viewed as a transitional figure in her field, redirecting both anthropology and folklore away from the limited confines of culture-trait diffusion studies and towards theories of performance as integral to the interpretation of culture. She studied the relationships between personality, art, language and culture, insisting that no trait existed in isolation or self-sufficiency, a theory which she championed in her 1934 book Patterns of Culture. The Title 'PATTERNS OF CULTURE written/authored/edited by RUTH BENEDICT', published in the year 2022. The ISBN 9788121262613 is assigned to the Hardcover version of this title. The Chakmas: life and Struggle [Hardcover]
ABOUT THE BOOK: The Chakmas are a simple hardy, peace loving community professing Buddhism and inhabiting the inaccessible hilly areas in India's north-east viz. the States of Tripura, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh and Arakan in Purma. Over the years and due to their cultural interaction with the people of other races, mainly Bengalees they have lost much of their original ethnic characteristics, and speak a dialect, Chakma dialect, which is almost the same as south-eastern Bengali, but there is much still which make them a distinctive cultural and ethnic entity. The present crisis of the Chakma community i.e. the ethnic threat which the Chakma inhabitants of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, their traditional homeland, are facing from the religiously prejudiced Bangladeshi rulers stem from the partition of Indian Subcontinent in 1947. The Chakmas much against their will were merged with Pakistan thought in their religion they were much closer to the Hindus than Muslims. Since then the successive rulers of Pakistan, and since 1972 of Bangladesh, have worked systematically for the obliteration of their separate ethnic identity which they have preserved all through their history. This has resulted in their being swamped over by the non-tribal Muslim Bengalees from the plains and their being reduced to minority status in their own homeland. Their saga of woes has stirred the conscience of the freedom-loving people the world over. The ethnographic literature hitherto has singularly lacked in a systematic and definitive study of this fascinating tribe and this great void has been now ably filled by S.P Talukdar through the present work. The book, fruit of the author's years of dedicated and painstaking work, has documented for the first time different aspects of the life of the Chakmas to a great degree of authenticity. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- S.P. Talukdar was born at Barkal, a small town in chittagong Hill Tracts (Bangladesh) bordering Mizoram. He is the son of Dr (Capt) P.B. Talukdar whose ancestors were member sof the landed aristocracy during the reign of the chakma rajas. He took up a career in the Indian Merchant Navy as an Engineer Officer after qualifying from the directorate of Marine Engineering Training, Calcutta. He travelled around the globe during his stint in the Merchant Navy. Later on he gave up the career of voyaging in favour of a more settled career in Civil Service with the Government of Assam. As a member of Mizoram civil Service now, he holds the position of Deputy Controller, Printing and Stationary Department. Edward B. Tylor
ANTHROPOLOGY: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE STUDY OF MAN AND CIVILIZATION
PATTERNS OF CULTURE
The ISBN 9788121262606 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. Swami Pranavananda
Exploration In Tibet [Hardcover]
About The Book : It is a matter of gratification to me to mention here that when Dr. B. P. Mookerjec, former Vice-Chancellor of the Calcutta University, was approached for help and advice, he so very graciously and kindly consented to get it published by the University ; and its out come is the present monograph. The book consists of two parts. In the first part, the author after giving a general description of the area deals with the various phenomena that he observed during the freezing and the melting of the lakes—Manasarovar and Rakshas Tal. The crevasse, locally known as mayur, along the edge of which blocks of ice are piled up, is a peculiar surface feature of Manasarovar when it freezes. About The Author : Swami Pranavananda (1896-1941) also known as Yugacaryya Srimat Svami Pra?avananda Ji Maharaja, was a Hindu yogi and saint who founded a not-for-profit and spiritual organization known as the Bharat Sevashram Sangha. He is remembered for his pioneering efforts to bring the modern Hindu society into the new age without compromising the essential values of ancient traditions of Hindu spirituality.

Maria Elisabetta Bucci
Autori: Maria Elisabetta Bucci.
