This deeply unfashionable book makes a case for once again paying attention to the particulars of literary language. NYU professor Denis Donoghue makes no secret of his critical heroes: Messrs. Leavis Blackmur and Burke among others though he insists that "The moral of the story is not: Back to the New Criticism. " Drawn from a number of essays and lectures that first appeared in other forums the book is somewhat fractured and in attacking the worst excesses of identity politics it also knocks down some straw men. To take just one of the examples Donoghue offers one need not refuse to read "Leda and the Swan " as one of his students did in order to ask questions about its central metaphor. To do so is neither to eschew close attention to the poem's language nor to become a crusader for PC dogma. The Practice of Reading reads best as a love poem to the joys and complexities of literary language as when Donoghue explicates texts ranging from Shakespeare's Macbeth to Cormac McCarthy's Blood Meridian. These sample readings are unfailingly perceptive imaginative and fair and his depth of reference is impressively broad. Donoghue's brand of aesthetic formalism is an approach just old- fashioned enough to find favor again. Pensare meglio. Strategie e scorciatoie per decidere senza sbagliare

Ci hanno insegnato che le scorciatoie sono qualcosa di sospetto, se non addirittura sbagliato o pericoloso: un trucchetto sleale, che permette di evitare parte del percorso necessario a raggiungere un obiettivo. Soluzioni per scansafatiche sempre pronti a «barare», o deviazioni adatte solo ai meno cauti. In ogni caso, niente di più lontano dalla matematica, con i suoi calcoli precisi - e un po' tediosi - da svolgere un passo alla volta. O no? Be', uno studioso e divulgatore del calibro di Marcus du Sautoy non sembra affatto d'accordo. Anzi, secondo lui la matematica è il regno del pensiero strategico, quello che ci porta al risultato richiesto nel tempo più breve e con il minor dispendio di energie possibile. Imboccando, insomma la stessa via seguita da Madre Natura. E non è un caso se gran parte di ciò che chiamiamo «progresso» sia nato proprio dalla capacità di semplificare un certo compito. Dobbiamo tantissimo a quei «pigri» che hanno trovato la soluzione meno faticosa per affrontare grandi problemi: dalle tecniche per edificare le prime città, sorte oltre cinquemila anni fa lungo il Nilo e l'Eufrate, al calcolo infinitesimale applicato all'ingegneria rinascimentale, fino agli algoritmi informatici in grado di indicarci la strada giusta o aiutarci a trovare online la nostra anima gemella. E la matematica non è l'unica scienza che può insegnare l'arte delle scorciatoie. Ecco perché questo libro divertente, pieno di aneddoti sorprendenti e di stimolanti enigmi da risolvere, si avventura in molti altri campi del sapere: dal mondo delle start-up a quello della musica, dai viaggi alla psicologia. Mostrandoci come proprio l'abilità di trovare approcci innovativi differenzi l'uomo dal più efficiente dei computer, che può invece affidarsi alla sua enorme capacità di calcolo per compiere in un attimo la via più lunga. Con la sua indubbia competenza e il suo inconfondibile piglio ironico, du Sautoy ci insegna come funzionano le scorciatoie mentali e quali sono le strategie per risolvere con creatività i problemi che affrontiamo ogni giorno. Starà a noi, poi, farne buon uso.
