Giovanni Botero. Un profilo tra storia e storiografia
br. A seguito delle recenti riedizioni delle maggiori opere boteriane, "Delle cause della grandezza delle città" (1588), "Della ragioni di Stato" (1589), "Le relazioni universali" (1591), il volume approfondisce alcuni aspetti della biografia intellettuale di Giovanni Botero, esaminando gli snodi centrali della sua carriera con particolare attenzione agli ambiti milanese, spagnolo e sabaudo entro cui essa si sviluppò. Nel contempo, grazie alle suggestioni provenienti da diversi approcci storiografici (dai Court Studies alla Global History), i vari capitoli si concentrano pure sulla proiezione universale dei suoi scritti, che travalicarono i confini peninsulari per divenire testi di riferimento per le dinastie e l'élite europee. Un'Appendice restituirà infine due scritti meno frequentati, entrambi apparsi nel 1598 a corredo della Ragion di Stato: "La Relazione del mare" e il "Discorso della reputazione del prencipe". Lavori che, come il resto della produzione di Botero, oscillano fra meraviglia per la natura e severa esperienza politica della vita di corte.

La pubblicazione nel 1970 di "Una teoria della giustizia" di John Rawls segnò la rinascita della filosofia politica in una forma adeguata alla complessità del mondo contemporaneo e apri un appassionato dibattito. Dopo oltre vent'anni Rawls tornò in campo con "Liberalismo politico", che non costituì solo la risposta alle innumerevoli osservazioni suscitate dal suo lavoro ma rappresentò anche un originale mutamento di rotta. Nel nuovo saggio l'idea della giustizia come equità viene radicalmente riformulata. Quella che Rawls chiama "una società bene ordinata", stabile, relativamente omogenea nelle sue convinzioni morali di fondo, viene ripensata alla luce dell'effettiva realtà delle moderne società democratiche entro cui coesistono una pluralità di dottrine inconciliabili tra loro. Come è possibile che una società di cittadini liberi ed eguali permanga a lungo concorde, pur essendo profondamente divisa per la coesistenza di dottrine incompatibili tra loro? Non si tratta più di una società unita nelle sue convinzioni morali ma nella sua concezione politica della giustizia: questa giustizia è al centro di "un consenso per intersezione di dottrine comprensive ragionevoli". Questa nuova edizione, conformemente alla recente edizione in lingua inglese, propone una nuova introduzione dell'autore e due nuovi capitoli: uno è la risposta ad alcune obiezioni mossegli da Habermas; l'altro è uno degli ultimi saggi, in cui Rawls raffina e mette a punto alcune idee contenute nel libro.
