From the library of J�rgen J�rgensen with his ownership signature to front wrapper. J�rgen J�rgensen 1894-1964 was a famous Danish philosopher and logician. He was a member of the Vienna Circle and an internationally known logical positivist. He corresponded with almost all famous logicians and analytic philosophers of the time and was a highly respected philosopher throughout the world. <br><br>In the work Schlick argues against synthetic a priori knowledge stating that the only truths that are self-evident to reason are statements that are true pr. definition e.g. statements of formal logic and mathematics. All other statements must be deemed true with reference to empirical evidence. If a statement does not live up to one of the two criteria Schlick defines it as "metaphysical" and thereby as meaningless -a sentiment that became leading for the Vienna Circle and its members.<br>"Allgemeine Erkenntnislehre" 1918 his major work examines a very wide range of problems and concepts relating to scientific knowledge. Schlick begins with the all-important concept of knowledge itself the analysis of which sets the tone and determines the special character of the work as a whole. Despite the half century since its appearance the work remains perhaps the most comprehensive and valuable treatment of the general theory of knowledge." DSB XII:178.<br><br>Schlick here distinguishes between two ways of knowing which he calls "Erkenntnis" i.e. recognition or knowledge and "Kenntnis" based on experience. With this distinction he both denies the impossibility of possessing knowledge of that which is beyond the directly perceived as well as the idea that reality is only connected to the immediately given i.e. the things that we perceive directly.<br>Schlick sees knowledge as the true description of the relationship of classes connections laws of relationships etc and thus it is by no means restricted to what can be directly perceived -rather the perceived provides us with the opportunity to receive knowledge of the laws that govern it. Thus the object of science is to test and formulate hypotheses and only form or structure can enter the field of knowledge -the immediately perceived is more a matter of feeling not of thought. But still according to Schlick matters of feelings are by no means of lesser value than those of thought.<br><br>Moritz Schlick 1882-1936 is the founding father of the Vienna Circle and logical positivism in general. In 1922 Schlick was appointed Professor of Philosophy in Vienna and here he organized regular meetings with the aim of discussing philosophy and science - an event that changed the face of modern philosophy. Some of the participants of this little group were: Rudolf Carnap Kurt G�del Hans Hahn Herbert Feigl Otto Neurath and Friedrich Waissmann. The called themselves the Ernst Mach association but for posterity they are remembered as the Vienna Circle. It is around the same time that Wittgenstein publishes his Tractatus Logico-Philosohicus and the work became a topic for the Vienna Circle at almost every meeting they held. La notazione musicale. Scrittura e composizione tra il 900 e il 1900

La scrittura musicale ha avuto e probabilmente sempre avrà due obbiettivi non del tutto coincidenti: indicare all'esecutore le azioni necessarie a produrre un determinato flusso di suoni, e registrare, attraverso un sistema di scrittura, la struttura stessa della musica presente in quel momento culturale. Schmid chiama scrittura 'funzionale', o 'esecutiva', una modalità di scrittura pensata prevalentemente per il primo di questi due obbiettivi, e scrittura 'sistemica', o 'strutturale', una modalità volta essenzialmente al secondo scopo. E particolarmente interessante che la ripresa, verso la fine del primo millennio d. C, del sistema notazionale greco-romano privilegiasse l'aspetto sistemico, mentre il metodo di notazione alternativo diffuso all'epoca, quello cosiddetto 'neumatico', mettendo in condizione il cantore che già conoscesse l'altezza delle note di riprodurre una melodia, si collocava piuttosto sul versante funzionale. Tutta la storia della scrittura della musica occidentale fino ai suoi esiti attuali è stata segnata dalla confluenza di queste origini miste, e il libro di Schmid ne costituisce una narrazione minuziosa e appassionante. Ma c'è un secondo assunto che questo libro intende dimostrare. Il tipo di scrittura della musica disponibile nei vari momenti del suo sviluppo storico, da un lato è conseguenza della musica viva che si faceva a quell'epoca, dall'altro a sua volta condiziona fortemente la creazione di nuova musica: letteralmente, rende possibili sviluppi del linguaggio musicale prima impensati (o anche ne condanna all'obsolescenza altri). Dunque la musica che fu scritta in e per una certa notazione non può essere trascritta in un linguaggio storicamente lontanissimo da essa senza che se ne perdano quote più o meno importanti di senso. Ma se la scrittura non è neutrale o ininfluente per la trasmissione del senso di un'opera, come consentire l'accesso a quell'opera in un mondo in cui la scrittura è interamente cambiata? A questo dilemma Schmid propone una soluzione, per così dire, mista. Per accedere oggi a un'opera del passato lontano lo studioso non può che tornare alla scrittura originale, ma per l'esecutore questa può essere resa più comprensibile con vari procedimenti di trascrizione che Schmid discute, illustra e insegna con opportuni esercizi di pratica, mostrando attraverso casi concreti come questo tipo di trascrizione intermedia chiarisca e in certi casi letteralmente illumini il senso della musica.

A vent'anni dalla caduta del Muro di Berlino, questo studio analizza il cinema della Repubblica democratica tedesca, in particolare la DEFA, l'industria cinematografica della Germania orientale attiva tra il 1946 e il 1992. Il libro, scandito per decenni, presenta i più significativi lungometraggi di finzione, i registi e gli attori, i generi, le fasi storico-politiche che hanno determinato i soggetti, l'accoglienza del pubblico, le politiche culturali e la censura. Attraverso il filtro cinematografico è soprattutto presentata la società tedesca orientale, come è andata modellando, pur sotto l'influenza sovietica, una propria identità e culture, miti, gusti e svaghi. La cinematografia tedesca orientale evidenzia inoltre conflitti e confronti interni esistenti tra generazioni, tra uomini e donne, tra ceti sociali, tra apparati dello stato e società civile, tra correnti riformiste e conservatrici nel partito guida, tra partito e intellettuali. Il lavoro si sofferma soprattutto sul ruolo di quest'ultimi, divisi tra progetti e realtà, tra l'impegno nella costruzione di un stato socialista e l'influenza esercitata su di loro dalle democrazie e dai mercati occidentali. Una particolare attenzione è conferita al conflitto tra potere e creatività e tra la politica culturale e il lavoro degli autori; e non ultimo al complesso rapporto della cinematografia con il passato recente tedesco, con il nazismo e con la tradizione antifascista.
