ril. Alla fine del Seicento ormai Steffani era una personalità di spicco nell'Europa barocca, sia come compositore, sia come diplomatico. Ne rende conto Francesco Trevisan in un "Elogio" del primo Ottocento qui riprodotto. Vista la sua autorevolezza, Steffani venne chiamato in causa da un misterioso marchese A.G. che lo coinvolse per dar credito alle "proposizioni" espresse da lui: nasce così la dotta dissertazione "Quanta certezza abbia da' suoi principii la musica", stampata ad Amsterdam nel 1695, che riscosse immediatamente un notevole successo. È un vivace spaccato della cultura enciclopedica di Steffani che unisce il sapere dell'alto prelato a quello più disinvolto dell'uomo di corte, dalle sacre scritture ai padri e ai dottori della chiesa, dalla filosofia alla medicina, dall'astronomia alla geometria fino alla storia antica.

brossura Nel settembre 1949 Wallace Stevens acquistò una natura morta di Pierre Tal-Coat e se ne innamorò al punto da darvi un titolo di sua invenzione: "Angelo circondato da paesani". Pochi giorni dopo da quel titolo nacque una poesia, in celebrazione di un angelo invisibile che annuncia ai pastori non una nascita divina ma una rivelazione terrestre: «sono l'angelo necessario della terra,/ perché la terra nel mio sguardo rivedete,/ libera dalla sua dura e ostinata maniera umana». È l'angelo della realtà che si limita a indicare la via del mondo, ma è necessario, perché il mondo rivive solo in quello sguardo. Lo sguardo della poesia. Questo volume raccoglie le riflessioni di poetica di Wallace Stevens, dirigente di una grossa compagnia di assicurazioni e insieme interprete tra i più fecondi e imprevedibili che la modernità abbia avuto. Flemmatico ed elegante uomo di legge, Stevens non perde mai la calma ed evita i toni enfatici, spesso ha battute di umorismo particolarissimo. Eppure insegna che l'angelo è necessario, scrive cioè una disincantata apologia della poesia per i nostri tempi. Da poeta, nei saggi evoca immagini. Parla della metafora, dell'immaginazione, dei rapporti tra poesia e pittura, in modo originale per stile e contenuto, riprendendo la questione dalla base, con semplicità e raffinatezza.
