Der Autor, (1483?-1553), Sproß einer alten vornehmen Patrizierfamilie, war in seinem Wirken fast gleich groß als Arzt, Humanist, Philosoph, Astronom und Dichter. Sein ärztlicher Ruhm war zu seinen Lebzeiten weit über die Grenzen seiner Heimat gedrungen. Dieses Gedicht ist ein Verdienst um die Medizin und die Kulturgeschichte: es ist der erste wissenschaftlich haltbare Erklärungsversuch der Lehre von der Ansteckung und brachte dem Autor einen dauernden Ehrenplatz in der Geschichte der Medizin ein.
