‎CABELL James Branch.‎

‎Domnei: A comedy of woman-worship By James Branch Cabell With an introduction by Joseph Hergesheimer.‎

‎John Lane The Bodley Head Limited London 1927. Wood-engraved frontispiece by Frank C. Pape; 4pp. integral advertisements at end; pp.2viii218iv; bright deep sky-blue rough buckram blocked and lettered black on front cover and spine; t.e. yellow. Slight barely noticeable foxing to fore-edges; otherwise a brilliantly fine copy in a very slightly frayed dustwrapper with an additional illustration by Pape just a trifle darkened on the spine. The first English and possibly first illustrated edition of a book originally published in America in September 1913 as ‘The Soul of Melicent’ and republished there in 1920 in an extended form including suppressed passages from the author’s manuscript and the addition of Hergesheimer’s Preface: apparently to capitalise on the success of ‘Jurgen’. The early American editions were not illustrated. Includes a four-page Bibliography of Cabell’s source material. Wallace skeleton in rags on way-side gibbet; printer’s imprint leaf at end blank on verso; pp.286 including end-papersii; horizontally-streaked dull-blue rough buckram lettered and pictorially blocked black a different gibbet scene on front cover lettered black on spine; poor quality back end-papers. Minor restoration to cloth at head of joints back cover lightly damp-stained and some very slight fading to cloth chiefly of spine; front end-papers very slightly chipped at gutters and with small repair; some foxing to first and last few leaves; back end-papers embrowned at edges. A good copy nonetheless of a difficult and sought-after title. The correct first edition English issue: the Colonial Edition in a differently coloured cloth with grey lettering is a good deal commoner as well probably as later: the second edition was in the colonial cloth. ‎PEASE Howard.‎

‎Border Ghost stories.‎

‎Erskine Macdonald Ltd. London W.C.1 1919. Pp.xvi303i printer’s imprint; apple-green fine-linen-grain buckram ruled blocked and lettered white on spine; t.e. green; end-papers printed with double-spread wood-engraved illustration after R.J.S. Bertram. Nice copy. Also known in dark red buckram ruled blind on front cover the spine ruled blocked and lettered gilt identically with the present copy and the top-edges brown. The red cloth binding looks the more expensive and might for that reason appear to claim precedence but given that the book was first issued during the period of stringency following the First World War when gilt was in short supply and that many books produced in that year had a cloth-grain similar to this it is impossible without other evidence to assign precedence. Mixed collection of Border tales Northumbrian and Scots including “The Warlock of Glororum†a monstrous carnivorous plant hidden in a secret chamber. Others are traditional ghost stories. Heavy dialect pieces set variously around the Tyne Northumberland and the Scottish border. Bleiler 1948 p.219 1978 p.155 ‘Guide to Supernatural Fiction’ 1295; Wilson ‘Shadows in the Attic’ p.407; Reginald 11264; not in Locke’s ‘Spectra’. Double cr.16mo; blank before half-title; two blanks at end serving as end-papers; pp.ii266iv; very dark brown cloth textured boards ruled and lettered gilt on spine. Slight foxing of edges; otherwise a very nice copy in slightly frayed and very slightly rubbed price-clipped dust-wrapper. A sequel to ‘Ritual in the Dark’ involving a good deal of black and white magic. Drugs including cocaine play some part in the plot. This title not in Locke’s ‘Spectrum’.
