Helder beschrijft Swart op welke diverse terreinen de Ruusbroecstudie zich heeft begeven en welke vraagstukken ze heeft trachten op te lossen. Dan wijdt hij zich aan een commentaar op Ruusbroecs hoofdwerk, dat hij paragraaf voor paragraaf naloopt. Die geestelike brulocht beschrijft de mystieke omvorming in zijn totaliteit, vanaf het morele en godsdienstige leven, dat voor alle gelovigen geldt, tot de hoogste mystieke uitbloei waaraan slechts luttele stervelingen toekomen. Niet alleen geeft Swart een voorbeeldige interpretatie waarin de kracht en de schoonheid van de Brulocht tot hun recht komen, hij ontwikkelt ook een methode die het onderzoek naar betogende teksten vooruit helpt.
