‎<p>This is a rare volume of the publication "The London Quarterly Review" containing an early review of the 1st edition publication of CHARLES DARWIN'S "The Voyage of the Beagle." The volume contains four separate issues: June October and December 1839 and March 1840. Each issue has its own Contents page. Curiously the volume opens with the Contents page for the October 1837 issue.no contents from this issue are actually present only the singular Contents page. There is an Index for the June and October1839 issues at the front and a separate Index for the December 1839 and March 1840 issues at the center. Volume LXIV. American edition published by Jemima M. Mason in New York. "The London Quarterly Review" was the American edition of the UK version called the "Quarterly Review."<br /><br />The highlight of this volume is the December 1839 issue which contains a rare early possibly the first lengthy 21-page review of the books "Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History of the Various Countries Visited by the H.M.S. Beagle" by CHARLES DARWIN and "Narrative of the Surveying Voyages of H.M.S. Adventure and Beagle" by Captain Philip Parker King and Captain Robert Fitzroy. This review of Darwin's book more commonly known as "The Voyage of the Beagle" was published the same year as the true first edition London and precedes the first American edition 1846 by seven years. The reviewer describes Darwin's book as "One of the most interesting narratives of voyaging that it has fallen to our lot to take up and one which must always occupy a distinguished place in the history of scientific navigation."</p> Jemima M. This was originally published ten years earlier in the Journal of the Proceedings of the Linnean Society of London. Dark green covers are generally clean with some wear to the spine ends and corners with a few small areas of bubbling and a couple of tiny marks. Top edge a little darkened front free endpaper is detached front hinge cracked and a little loose feeling but the rest of the page block is securely bound. The next page is the half title page unsure whether there is supposed to be a blank page before that. Half title has a previous owners name. Pages a little age toned there are some pages with slightly creased corners from having been read plus a few pages with a spot or small mark. The rear free endpaper is starting to come loose and the rear board also has a slightly loose feel. The pages are slightly indented to the bottom inside corner at the spine possibly has been dropped at some point. Good condition. viii 208 pages 32 pages of publishers works at the back dated January 1875. <br/> <br/> John Murray hardcover‎

During "the eclipse of Darwinism" from the 1880s to the 1930s various other mechanisms of evolution were given more credit. With the development of the modern evolutionary synthesis in the 1930s and 1940s Darwin's concept of evolutionary adaptation through natural selection became central to modern evolutionary theory and it has now become the unifying concept of the life sciences. <strong>Charles Robert Darwin</strong> FRS FRGS FLS FZS 12 February 1809 – 19 April 1882 was an English naturalist geologist and biologist best known for his contributions to the science of evolution. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and he was honoured by burial in Westminster Abbey. By the 1870s the scientific community and a majority of the educated public had accepted evolution as a fact. However many favoured competing explanations which gave only a minor role to natural selection and it was not until the emergence of the modern evolutionary synthesis from the 1930s to the 1950s that a broad consensus developed in which natural selection was the basic mechanism of evolution. Darwin's scientific discovery is the unifying theory of the life sciences explaining the diversity of life. Darwin's early interest in nature led him to neglect his medical education at the University of Edinburgh; instead he helped to investigate marine invertebrates. Studies at the University of Cambridge Christ's College encouraged his passion for natural science. His five-year voyage on HMS <em>Beagle</em> established him as an eminent geologist whose observations and theories supported Charles Lyell's conception of gradual geological change and publication of his journal of the voyage made him famous as a popular author. Puzzled by the geographical distribution of wildlife and fossils he collected on the voyage Darwin began detailed investigations and in 1838 conceived his theory of natural selection. Although he discussed his ideas with several naturalists he needed time for extensive research and his geological work had priority. He was writing up his theory in 1858 when Alfred Russel Wallace sent him an essay that described the same idea prompting immediate joint publication of both of their theories. Darwin's work established evolutionary descent with modification as the dominant scientific explanation of diversification in nature. In 1871 he examined human evolution and sexual selection in <em>The Descent of Man and Selection in Relation to Sex</em> followed by <em>The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals</em> 1872. The sixth edition contains various additions and corrections and was the first to use the word evolution though he first used the term a year earlier in The Descent of Man. The first printing of the sixth edition is the eleventh thousand printed the same year as this. Green cloth covers with patchy fading or mottling spine ends rubbed and chipped corners rubbed secure binding endpapers bright and without any inscriptions the rear endpaper has a small tear and signs of glue to the hinge presumably a historical repair which is neat and secure. Half title spotted pages a little age toned with a few rare spots. Complete with pull out chart. Good condition. 19x13cm xxi 458 pages. <br/> <br/> John Murray hardcover‎
