Il testo è una preziosa guida pratica al riconoscimento delle più importanti specie spontanee della flora europea e delle piante ornamentali da giardino nonché quelle da appartamento che possano in qualche modo creare situazioni di intolleranza, allergia, intossicazione o avvelenamento agli uomini. Da tali insidie non sono inoltre esenti né gli animali domestici, in particolare quelli giovani, né gli animali da allevamento. Il manuale è costituito da una parte generale che, oltre alla descrizione delle più importanti caratteristiche morfologiche delle piante e dei principali veleni presenti in natura, contiene suggerimenti per prevenire eventuali intossicazioni e norme di primo soccorso. La parte speciale è composta di 120 schede, in ordine alfabetico secondo il nome comune più diffuso. Per ogni specie sono citati altri nomi comuni correntemente usati, il nome scientifico con eventuali sinonimi e la famiglia di appartenenza. Nelle schede sono poi riportate le caratteristiche per l'identificazione, l'habitat, la distribuzione geografica, i principi attivi di tossicologia e velenosità, i relativi sintomi di avvelenamento e note comprendenti l'etimologia del nome (quando reperibile), gli utilizzi della pianta e curiosità di vario genere.

A picture of this book is available upon request by Buller, a professor of botany and acclaimed researcher of fungi and mushrooms, provides a major contribution to the physiology, morphology and physics of reproduction in the Hymenomycetes and also a record of some observations upon the discharge of spores of Asomycetes and of Pilobulus. Detailed and scholarly, with excellent illustrations, the author also describes his research methods and apparatus. This book was quite successful and popular and later became a series of several volumes, but this edition did not indicate there would be later volumes.
