SWAN CLAUDIA
The Clutius Botanical Watercolors: Plants And Flowers Of The Renaissance
Harry N. Abrams Inc. New York: 1998. Hardcover with dustjacket. Very good condition. During the Renaissance the boundary between art and science was not as clearly drawn as it is in the information age. One of the key functions of science in Da Vinci's day was to accurately and elegantly depict the denizens of the natural world and nowhere did the scientist-artists shine more than in botanical studies. The Clutius Botanical Watercolors offers a glimpse into the world of 16th-century naturalists who spent much time "botanizing." This particularly gorgeous collection of original but unsigned drawings and watercolors was owned by Theodorus Clutius a Netherlands pharmacist and they were used to instruct budding scientists and physicians at Leiden University. These plant studies are exquisitely detailed and delicately colored retaining both usefulness and beauty. Every needle on the pine bough is painstakingly rendered. Each pea leaf tendril and flower is accurate and dainty. Each plant in the pleasure garden the kitchen garden and the wild is drawn and tinted to perfection ISBN: 0810940957. Harry N. Abrams, Inc., New York: 1998 hardcover

Intellectual property Rights and Biodiversity Conservation - an interdisciplinary analysis of the values of medicinal plants
Cambridge University Press 1995. Octavo pp xiv 271 four or five pages are slightly indistinct - a printing error - but still readable otherwise this is virtually as new in a very good dustwrapper. The urgent need to ensure the conservation of biological diversity is now widely recognised but practical measures to protect endangered species and habitats are still carried out on a small scale and generally limited to developed countries. This volume provides a detailed analysis of the economic and scientific rationales for biodiversity conservation. It discusses the justification for and implementation of intellectual property rights regimes as incentive systems to encourage conservation. An interdisciplinary approach is used in the book encompassing fields of study that include evolutionary biology chemistry economics and legal studies. The arguments are presented using the case study of the use of medicinal plants in the pharmaceutical industry. The book will be of interest and relevance to a broad spectrum of conservationists from research students to policy makers. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Very Good. SWEERT EMMANUEL
Florilegium...tractans de variis floribus et aliis indicis plantis as vivum delineatum in duabus partis et quatuor linguis concinnatum
2 parti in un volume, in folio (mm 397x255). Frontespizio calcografico con figure allegoriche, seconda parte con titolo separato e vignetta editoriale silografica. Ritratto dell'autore mancante in antiporta, 110 raffinate tavole a piena pagina, incise finemente in rame.
Sguardie rinnovate. Scomparto superiore del dorso e cuffia inferiore reintegrate.
Nissen BBI 1920; Hunt 196; Pritzel 9073.

2 parts in one volume in 2° (mm 395 x 255). Engraved allegorical title. Second part with separate titlepage with wood-vignette. Figured frontespiece with engraved portrait of the author missing, 110 wonderful engraved plates of flowers. Good copy anyway as with margins of allegorical title very lightly soiled, small tears in lower margin of title repaired, plates 9-11 and 61-64 with ink spots on inner margin, brown stain on plate 25 of the second part, new endpapers, upper and lower spine-ends renewed. Late 17th-century calf gilt, sides with wavy, small roll-tool outer border, spine with ribs decorated gilt, red morocco lettering-piece.
First edition of both parts I and II. Very Rare. Emanuel Sweet, a Dutch florist and prefect of gardens for Emperor Rudolf II, issued the Florilegium in 1612. It was essentially an unpriced sale catalogue, in Latin, Dutch, German and French of Sweert's stock available for sale at the Frankfurt Fair. Over 560 different flowers are shown on the 110 plates, generally grouped by species and with a brief explanatory note for each one. Sweert copied the engravings from De Bry's Florilegium of 1611, which was itself partially based on a 1608 work by Pierre Vallet. A white iris was even named for him (the Iris Sweertii). The work is divided into two parts: the first deals with bulbous species, and the second with species having "fibrous" roots (hellebores, canna, lily of the valley, chrysthanthemums, and many others) and a number of "beautiful" and "fragrant" trees such as myrtle, arbor vitae, and juniper. The work was very popular, leading to 6 editions being published (one in Frankfurt, the others in Amsterdam) between 1612 and 1647. Nissen BBI 1920; Hunt 196.
