Isbister School Football Team Senior Champions - City School League 1901-2: An Original Turn-of-the-Century Photograph Featuring Daniel J. McIntyre Superintendent of Winnipeg Schools
Winnipeg Manitoba: Welford Studio 1902. First Edition First Printing. Original Photograph on Mount. Original gelatin silver photograph measuring 9" x 7" mounted on its original heavy card stock frame to an overall size of 10" x 9.75". Bears the imprint of the little-known Winnipeg photography firm "Welford Photo Winnipeg" to the upper-left corner of the mount. A printed caption is set in type below the image identifying the team their championship status "Senior Champions of the City School League 1901-2" and its members. An important group portrait capturing the Isbister School football team at the moment of their senior championship victory but its historical significance is cemented by the one man of influence seated amongst the student-athletes. Prominently featured in the centre is the single most important figure in the history of Winnipeg's public schools Daniel J. McIntyre 1852-1946. As the city's first and longest-serving Superintendent of Schools from 1890 to 1928 McIntyre was the chief architect of the educational system during its period of greatest expansion. His nearly four-decade tenure shaped the lives of generations of Winnipeggers and his legacy is honoured by the collegiate that bears his name to this day. His presence in the photograph suggests a strong endorsement of the team's achievement from the very top of the city's educational leadership. The team itself represented Isbister School a key collegiate institute named for Alexander Kennedy Isbister a prominent Métis educator with deep roots in the Red River Settlement. Their victory in the City School League was a major achievement in the sport of rugby football the direct predecessor to modern Canadian football. The photograph was taken at the little-known early Winnipeg photographic studios of Herbert Welford 1865- of Welford Photo. The image retains strong detail and tone with some largely unobtrusive spotting. The original mount remains sound; the lower portion of the board immediately above where the title and the caption are printed has been neatly but superficially cut but is tenderly holding. There is a slight crack to the lower-right margin of the board still holding margins mildly rubbed. Good. <br/><br/> Welford, Studio unknown

Sutherland "Vics" Basketball Team Dowler Trophy Champions 1927: A Striking Original Silver Gelatin Photograph Featuring James A. Richardson Sr. and Rev. J.M. Shaver
Winnipeg Manitoba: W.W. Robson Photo 1927. Original Photograph on Mount. Original silver gelatin photograph measuring 7" x 9.25" mounted on its original heavy card stock frame with embossed decorative border to an overall size of 11" x 14". Bears the signature of the prominent Winnipeg photography firm "Wm. Robson Photo Winnipeg" which is embossed to the lower right corner of the mount. A printed paper label is affixed below the image identifying the team their championship status "Dowler Trophy Champions 1927" and its members. A remarkable photograph connecting the highest echelons of Canadian commerce foundational social reform in Winnipeg and the city's vibrant sporting history. This group portrait captures the Sutherland "Vics" basketball team at their moment of victory but its true significance lies in the figures pictured among them. Prominently appearing in the centre with a stern demeanour is the team's Honorary President James Armstrong Richardson Sr. 1885-1939 the patriarch of the Richardson dynasty and one of Canada's most powerful business figures. Having moved his family's national grain-exporting firm to Winnipeg in 1923 Richardson was a giant of the city's establishment. At the time this photograph was captured he was not only President of James Richardson & Sons but also a director of the CPR the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce and Great-West Life. Merely one year prior in 1926 he had founded Western Canada Airways a venture that would pioneer aviation in the Canadian North. His presence here demonstrates a deep and personal commitment to local community life amongst his many roles as a prominent business person in the "Chicago of the North". Situated immediately to his left is team President Reverend Dr. J.M. Shaver another key figure in Winnipeg's influential social gospel movement. In 1921 Rev. Shaver became the superintendent of the All People's Mission the famed inner-city institution previously led by J.S. Woodsworth. The team's name the Sutherland "Vics" almost certainly refers to the All People's Sutherland Mission on Sutherland Avenue which served as a vital community hub offering recreational activities education and support to the city's working-class and immigrant families. This photograph is a testament to the Mission's role in fostering community through sport. The Sutherland "Vics" are noted as champions of the "Dowler Trophy" placing them squarely within the history of Manitoba basketball during a golden era for the sport in Winnipeg. The photograph was taken by the venerable local photographer William Wight Robson 1865-1946 who operated his studio on Portage Avenue for over two decades. A very good example the photographic print is clean with strong tonality and sharp detail. The original mount is sound although the top portion appears to have been neatly excised with some light rubbing and minor wear to extremities not affecting the image. 1895. Good overall. Large albumen photograph depicting a Cingalese Ceylon family consisting of a grandfather father and young daughter all dressed in their finest. The young father holds a cloth parasol. The young daughter about 6 or 7 years old already is wearing fine gold ornaments including necklaces nose ring and earrings. <br /> <br /> "Colombo Apothecaries Company was established by J. Smith Finlay and W.M. Smith in Colombo Ceylon in 1883. From a small mercantile establishment the Company grew rapidly into a large general store selling most commodities. The name Colombo Apothecaries Company was established in 1892 and by this time already had a photographic department. As an expansion of this department the company acquired the negatives of Charles Scowen Company and moved their studio to Kandy where the climate was considered better for photographic work than Colombo. After the acquisition of the Scowen portfolio the Colombo Apothecaries Company produced a fine catalogue and started selling their photographs worldwide". Photo album of a British Businessman's life in Ceylon with 3 Hong Kong Silvertone photos
1920. Hardcover. Very good overall. An interesting photograph album of about 88 photographs compiled by an unknown British businessman who visits Hong Kong Colombo & wider Ceylon. He visits Hong Kong as a bachelor and here there are several amusing snapshots of men in kimonos some parading with parasols. Arriving in Ceylon the businessman seems to have been involved with either rubber or coconut plantations. He appears to marry in Ceylon. There are also 13 vernacular shots of Colombo buildings and people including a lovely Sri Lankan woman and a Chinese street seller. There is a charming image of a young coolie asleep on the bottom rung of his rickshaw. A group of 4 photos show a large white ship from various angles includes one of the captain looking at native boats alongside by photographer Karl Lewis possibly related to the Great White Fleet. Then a group of personal family portraits and one of the Forth Bridge in Scotland.<br /> <br /> Lewis was an interesting photographer of the last century. Born in Kentucky in 1865 he started as a dock worker and eventually took to the sea living all over the world. He settled in Yokohama in 1901 had a common law wife and ran small photographic printing business issuing brochures postcards and covers that were sometimes hand colored. In 1905 his catalog advertised "take any photograph sketch or draw produce 100 elegantly colored postcards for $1.75 including shipping." Over the years he found sailors and the American Navy a popular subject possibly because of sales. His postcards & photographs have become very collectible. See great white fleet website.<br /> <br /> Photograph sizes vary 3 ¾ x 4 ¾"; c x 2 ¾"; 6 x 4 ¼";3 ¼ x 4 ¼"; 4 x 5 ¾"; 6 3/8 x 4 ¾". Most images are vernacular some have numbers/letters in the image but no identified photographer other than the Lewis images mentioned above. <br /> <br /> Thick oblong photograph album 11 ¾ x 9 ½ x 2 ½". Green two-tone cloth covers with thick album board varying between brown gray and dark green backing the photographs. Boards a bit speckled corners rubbed and a bit marked but firmly bound. <br /> <br /> An interesting vernacular album of Sri Lanka and the course of this man's life. hardcover

A complete set full of charming views of Switzerland. <br /><br />CONDITION: The vast majority of stereoviews are clear and sharp. A bit of fading to a handful of views. Teacher's Album of 124 Photographs from Rural Midwestern School including Michigan in 1920s
Rural Schools Photo album from a teacher working in 1920s in several rural Midwestern America including Michigan Schools. 124 original silver gelatin print photographs detailing the lives of teachers students and community members around the one-room schools that served small farming communities. 124 black and white silver gelatin print photos various sizes from 2.5 x 1.5 in. to 4.5 x 6.5 in. Photos date from 1922-1929. Original paper boards. 7 x 12 inches. 58 pages. Album from teacher who worked at Pearsall School 1922-23 Eddy School 1923-24 Baker School 1924-25 Country Farm School 1925-26 Dye School 1927-28 and Dorr School 1927-29. In addition to photos includes 32 pieces of ephemera including drawings invitations valentines and numerous press clippings with updates on the various schools. Most of the photos identify the school and include group photos of the children. These one-room schools had few pupils often under 20 in the entire school so teachers had to be prepared to instruct students at multiple levels. Many of the group photos show children in working clothes such as overalls and simple cotton dresses. In some photos it's clear that children are barefoot while others taken in cooler months show them bundled up in jackets and work boots. In addition to photos of students posing by their schools there are images of special presentations and students at leisure. One image shows the children all dressed in capes as part of a musical performance; another shows two students and the teacher riding bicycles on a sunny afternoon. There are 47 individual photos of students from Dorr and Loomis Schools with their first and last names handwritten below. One particularly striking image of a young boy Ronald Bishop comes with additional information on his fate: “Killed by carâ€. Some photos identify community members such as “Nora and Hazel†and “Mr. Barnes†who appears to be a delivery person in his official cap and horse-drawn buggy. <br /> <br /> Newspaper clippings on the various schools provide updates on the institutions and students’ progress. “Hazel M. Hummel Teacher. Our school closed for vacation with Christmas program at the schoolhouse. After the program.the ladies ten treat dus to popcorn balls and candy which we enjoyed very much. Santa Clause was there and we all received a generous share of the presents with with the tree was loaded.†“We now have an enrollment of 13.Our percentage of attendance was 98 last month.We went flowering last week and found adder-tongues May flowers and a few lilies.The with graders have finished all their books and are reviewing now in preparation for the examination next week.Last Friday we celebrated Willard and Lucille Youngs’ birthday with a potluck dinner at the school-house…†“There are now 21 pupils.the primary grade pupils have made brownies lanterns and witches in the kettle for Hallowe’en seat work.The older grades made Hallowe’en posters for Friday’s art class.The eight grade agriculture class have collected and mounted in a scrapbook the leaves of the trees in our neighborhood.We all enjoyed our vacation Thursday and Friday as Miss Hummel attended the institute.†This is a clear reference to ongoing training sessions for the teacher to stay up to date on new pedagogy and educational topics showing the formalization and training required for women to pursue this profession.
