Diane Waggoner
Lewis Carroll's Photography and Modern Childhood
Princeton NJ: Princeton University Press 2020. 1st. Very Good/None. Hardcover 264 pages still in publisher's shrinkwrap. Lewis Carroll began photographing children in the mid-nineteenth century at a time when the young medium of photography was opening up new possibilities for visual representation and the notion of childhood itself was in transition. In this lavishly illustrated book Diane Waggoner offers the first comprehensive account of Carroll as a photographer of modern childhood exploring how his photographs of children gave visual form to emerging conceptions of childhood in the Victorian age. Situating Carroll's photography within the broader context of Victorian visual and social culture Waggoner shows how he drew on images of childhood in painting and other media and engaged with the visual language of the Victorian theater fancy dress and Pre-Raphaelitism. She provides the first in-depth analysis of Carroll's photographing of boys which she examines in the context of boys' education and reveals to be a significant part of his photographic career. Waggoner draws on a wealth of rare archival material demonstrating how Carroll established new aesthetic norms for images of girls engaged with evolving definitions of masculinity and pushed the idea of childhood to the limit with his use of dress and nude images Record # 380697 Princeton University Press hardcover

Dibitonto Simona

TO THE WHITE SEA
New York NY U.S.A.: Houghton Mifflin Company 1993. First Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. By the author of the bestselling DELIVERANC this spellbinding novel of survival confirmed the late James Dickey as the successor to Ernest Hemingway John Updike described legendary Southern poet and novelist James Dickey as 'the high-flyer of American poets'. This was literally true: he flew over 100 missions in WWII developing his reputation as a tough-guy and his dark poetic insights into the human instinct to survive. Of his three novels To the White Sea is the truest to his experience. An American airforce gunner is blasted from the sky over Tokyo in the 1945 firestorms which seem end civilization. And he is glad of it. Left with only his army survival kit his own knife and his upbringing as a hunter in the lower Arctic the airman makes his way through the burning city under cover of chaos and across the alien country to the northern snows where he can live alone on his instincts. This is a haunting and starkly beautiful book of fire and ice blood and snow stripping back layers of humanity to reveal man as both hunter and hunted an unequivocal part of nature.
