Softcover bound in stapled pictorial wraps titled in black & red with a large black & white photograph of a pilot standing on the wing of his plane illustrating the front cover and a color ad for the "Revere 8 Projector" on the rear cover. The covers are rubbed soiled and creased with a few small chips to the edges. There are short tears along the head and tail of the spine. 58 & 2 pages including the covers illustrated with 25 pages of war time photographs by members of Steichen's Naval Aviation Photographic Unit. Some of the pages are lightly creased with hints of light foxing. Good. <p>A special naval aviation issue which includes "A twenty-five page selection of pictures by a group of top-flight navy officer photographers headed by Lt. Commander Steichen". As the editor notes on page 11: "These are great pictures - probably the finest group of photographs 'U.S. Camera' has ever published. Navy regulations will not permit the names of the individual photographers to be used. Each is hidden behind an 'Official Navy Photograph by-line'."</p><p>Photographs include a full-page portrait of Senator John McCain's father Rear Admiral John S. McCain.</p><p>A "Commentary by Rockwell Kent" fills a third of page 26.</p><p>Established by the Navy in early 1942 to document and publicize the activities of its aviators during the war the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit was placed under the command of Edward Steichen. Steichen's unit was made up of Lt Wayne Miller Lt Dwight Long Lt Charles E. Kerlee Lt Charles Fenno Jacobs Lt Cmdr Horace Bristol Ensign Victor Jorgensen and Ensign Alfonso "Fons" Iannelli. Both Jacobs and Bristol had been photographers for "Life" magazine.
