POINAR JR GEORGE
A Naturalist's Guide To The Hidden World Of Pacific Northwest Dunes
Oregon State University Press Corvallis: 2016. Softcover. Brand new book. From Northern California to British Columbia coastal dunes and beaches provide a unique habitat for plants animals and insects. With A Naturalist's Guide to the Hidden World of Pacific Northwest Dunes hikers and beach walkers on the Pacific Coast will discover a teeming metropolis of life in what may seem a barren landscape to the inattentive eye. Contrary to casual observation intricate patterns of life occur in coastal dunes and along the strand. Plants insects and parasites abound. George Poinar's in-depth knowledge of this hidden world is unsurpassed and his enthusiasm for it is infectious. He has been investigating and photographing specimens along the Pacific Coast for more than four decades and presents this trove of knowledge to the reader in a clear engaging style. Poinar exposes the small almost blind weevils that live under driftwood and slowly degrade the wood the omnipresent beach hoppers that leap up at every step and flee from vicious rove beetles dune ants that search out aphids for honeydew but are attacked themselves by dive-bomber wasps. He shows why he considers Beach pea Seashore lupine and Coast willow keystone species because they provide food and shelter for so many different life forms. With a focus on the associations between dune plants and other life forms the book includes over 600 full-color photographs from the author's extensive collection. While it is accessible enough to serve as a field guide for hikers and outdoor enthusiasts comprehensive data for biologists studying dune ecology are also included. A Naturalist's Guide to the Hidden world of Pacific Northwest Dunes belongs on every beach house bookshelf from California to Canada. Naturalists scientists and anyone who walks along the coast will welcome this lavishly-illustrated reference. 6 9 652 color photographs Glossary 288 pages. Presentation Photograph Album Given to U.S. Minister-Counselor to West Germany William C. Trimble.
Germany: N.p. 1957. Original photograph album containing over 60 photographs and presented to William Trimble in 1957 as a gift when he left the American embassy in Bonn West Germany. ALASKA: PHOTOGRAPHY
The 1928 Alaska Tour Photograph Album.
Alaska: N.p. ca. 1928. Original photograph album measuring 9 x 5 1/4 inches and bearing 91 original silver gelatin prints of the 1928 Alaska Road Tour by Governor George A Parks the Alaska Road Commissioner Major Malcolm Elliott and Territorial Highway Engineer Robert J. Sommers. THe photographs measure 5 5/8 x 3 1/2 inches and all or nearly so bear a typewritten caption. Original string-tied flexible leather with gilt cover lettering and a photographic title plate. The photographs and the album are both in very good condition. This tour was undertaken by Parks Elliott and Sommers in 1928 to ascertain the need for more highways in Alaska and to discern the work already done on various existing routes such as the Richardson Highway. The trip of 2500 miles to northern and interior Alaska was the first extensive trip that an Alaskan governor had made by airplane. In 1928 there were less than 500 miles of paved roads in the entire state 363 on the Richardson Highway and 44 on the Steese Highway. On the front pastedown of the album is an itinerary photograph listing dates locations miles traveled and form of transportation. All in all they traveled 4580 miles of which 385 were by steamship 467 by rail 281 by railroad speeders automobiles adapted to ride on the rails 432 by truck and automobile 8 by wagon and 2007 by air. They drove a 1928 Ford when they were able photograph included. The largest amount of miles traveled was by air and their pilot was A. A. Bennett photographs included. They left Juneau on May 22 and returned June 28th. Their stops were as follows; Fairbanks Nenana McGrath Ophir Takotna Iditerad Unalakleet Golovin Nome Teller Candle Kotzebue Nulato Ruby Tanana Bettles Wiseman Fort Yukon Circle Hot Springs Livengood Fairbanks Chitina Kennicott. McCarthy Dan Creek Road Chitina and Cordova. Opposite this itinerary is a photograph of a map showing the routes taken. There are 91 original photographs of the sights seen by this group on their Alaska Tour of 1928. There does not seem to be any overriding theme other than transportation and the compiler has included many photographs of these he found interesting. A few examples would be "Bill and wife at their cabin on Ophir-Takotna Road. These people are mining placer gold"; "Freighting on Yukon Highway near Goldstream" ; "Tunnel at head of Fox Gulch tapping Chatanika River watershed for for dredges in Goldstream"; "Gold Dredge at Flat"; "Cabin on Nome-Shelton tram near Nome bridge"; "Gas-driven speeder on Nome-Shelton tram"; "The graveyard at Nulato"; "End of aviation field at Nulato" a panorama of two photographs joined and showing many indigenous people; "Fort Yukon Hotel"; "Alaska Road Commission house at Sallchaket"; "Cableway ferry i.e. a zipline for pedestrians between aviation field and village Golovin"; "Widening of Richardson Highway near Hogans--June 1928"; "Adams grader and caterpillar working between Fairbanks and 18-mile Roadhouse-June 19 1928" etc. Special attention is given to the various airfields as is appropriate as they traveled far by air of Alaska: Fairbanks Airport Nenana Landing Field Unalakleet aviation field Nulato aviation field. Wiseman aviation field Bettles aviation field etc. This album was a portrayal of a government survey of transportation in Alaska and thus there are almost no photographs of strictly natural phenomenon lakes glaciers etc. It is likely that Robert J. Sommers was the photographer as there are numerous photographs of Parks and Elliott but only one of Sommers. Plus included is a leather zip-up satchel with with the initials R. J. S. in gilt and within it are many assorted newspaper articles about Robert J. Sommers. Also included is a large 13 1/4 x 8 1/4 inches original hand-colored photograph of the Taku Glacier by E. Andrews a n original copy printed matted of the R. J. Sommers Construction Company showing a busy yard in 1944 a packet of personal photographs from R. J. Sommers an original photograph of Sitka an original hand-colored photograph entitled Lights O Juneau and a professional portrait photograph of Sommers."After Alaska achieved territorial status in 1912 the Territorial Legislature repealed the 1904 road tax law and replaced it with a flat four dollar tax imposed on taxpayers no matter where they lived in Alaska. By this time in 1913 the federally-operated Alaska Road Commission ARC had created 2167 miles of trail 617 miles of winter sled trail and 862 miles of wagon road. 0f this mileage the ARC considered the 419 miles of the Valdez to Fairbanks road its most important accomplishment. It was over this route in 1913 that the ARC sent an army truck on an experimental journey. The truck completed a 922-mile round trip including a side trip to Chitina between July 28 and August 19 averaging about 50 miles per day. During World War I federal appropriations for road-building in Alaska decreased. But advances in road-building equipment and automobiles made during the war benefited Alaska after the war. Motor vehicles saved about one-third of the cost of horse-drawn traffic per ton carried per mile. The average cost of moving a ton of freight one mile was 37 cents by bobsled on a winter sled road 50 cents by auto or truck and $1.37 by wagon in summer. By 1919 automobiles and trucks made up about 90 per cent of the traffic moving over Alaskan wagon roads. In 1920 the ARC was able to acquire war-surplus army trucks and tractors greatly improving its road-building and maintaining capabilities."Alaksa Humanities.Robert J. Sommers a civil engineer came to Alaska in 1900. Sommers served as superintendent of the Alaska Road Commission from 1915-1918 and both Survey General and Secretary of Alaska from 1919-1921. He later served as the first territorial highway engineer for the state. In 1931 he formed his own construction company R. J. Sommers Construction Company with former Governor Parks as his vice-president. In his oral history R.J. Sommers talks about working for a mining company in 1904 at Teller Alaska attending school at the Hails Engineering College construction of the steel bridge on Cushman Street working as superintendent of the Alaska Road Commission in 1918 the contract with Charlie Fisher to build the first building at the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines in Fairbanks constructing buildings at the air base his involvement in the first ferry system from Haines to Juneau the ferry Chilkat buildings he has constructed in the Juneau area road work in Douglas construction of VHF stations for aircraft communications building airfields in Nome the Russian plane exchange building airfields at Moses Point Unalakleet and Galena problems with the construction of the Mendenhall Bridge Tom Riggs his appointment as the Mining Inspector for the Territory of Alaska appointment as Surveyor General being the first territorial highway engineer his association with George Parks his support of the Boy Scouts etc. Sommers Construction built the first building at the University of Alaska Juneau as well as many bridges and airfields around the state. He died in Santa Barbara in 1972The pilot A. A. Bennett was born in Oregon around 1888. Bennett was a pilot in San Diego before coming to Alaska in the mid-1920s. He is believed to be the first pilot to land on Kuskokwim River ice at Bethel. He flew for Fairbanks Airplane Company and later was the flying partner of Bennet-Rodenbaugh Company in Fairbanks there is a photo of his hangar herein. He brought legendary Joe Crosson to Alaska. Bennett left Alaska for Idaho and later lived in Las Vegas. He was inducted into the Alaska Aviation Museum Hall of Fame in 2012.George Alexander Parks was an American engineer who worked in Alaska Territory for most of his career. Following an unexpected nomination from President Calvin Coolidge he became the territory's first resident governor. Transportation was a major issue for the territory during the Parks administration. To offset running deficits and reduced federal subsidies rates for the Alaska Railroad were raised and a toll was implemented on the Richardson Highway. One area that saw an improvement however was air travel. In 1925 funds for landing fields was authorized by the territorial legislature. Two years later subsidized air travel between the Alaska Railroad and Seward Peninsula was initiated. Parks became an avid enthusiast of air travel using it to inspect much of the territory in May and June 1928.Of Major Malcolm Elliott not much is known other than that he held a military post and was the fifth President of the Alaska Road Commission 1927-1932 N.p. hardcover

HELLMAN KAREN
The Window In Photographs
J. Paul Getty Museum Los Angeles: 2013. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. Photographers have been irresistibly drawn to the window as a powerful source of inspiration throughout the history of the medium. As one of the first camera subjects the window is literally and figuratively linked to the photographic process itself. By bringing together key works arranged thematically rather than chronologically and presenting pairings within broader stylistic movements this volume examines the motif of the window as a symbol of photographic vision. The Window in Photographs includes more than eighty color plates spanning the history of photography all drawn from the J. Paul Getty Museum's permanent collection. The theme is presented in a wide range of contexts from one of the earliest images by William Henry Fox Talbot or Julia Margaret Cameron's 1864 allegorical use of the motif to works by members of the Photo-Secession including Gertrude Ksebier and Fred Holland Day. The documentary thread of the street photographer can be followed in Eugne Atget's record of the old quartiers of Paris and later twentieth-century photographs by William Eggleston Walker Evans and Lee Friedlander. Alfred Stieglitz and Paul Strand chose to utilize the theme of the window for its more graphic possibilities. More recently photographers Shizuka Yokomizo and Gregory Crewdson explored conceptual aspects of the window to investigate themes of voyeurism and invented narrative while Uta Barth and Yuki Onodera created more abstract visions. The book accompanied the exhibition At the Window: The Photographer's View on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum October 1 2013 to January 5 2014. 112 pages 7 1/4 x 8 5/8 21 color and 71 black-and-white illustrations. STARR S. FREDERICK; BRANTLEY ROBERT S. PHOTOGRAPHY & ILLUSTRATIONS
Une Belle Maison: The Lombard Plantation House In New Orleans's Bywater
University Press of Mississippi Jackson: . Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. An extraordinary look at the life decay and restoration of a plantation home. This book brings together artist John James Audubon; architect of the U.S. capital Benjamin Henry Latrobe; Lee Harvey Oswald; and Fats Domino in an engrossing story linking these and other colorful figures to the history of a beautiful historic home in New Orleans. The Lombard plantation house is a rare survivor. Built in the early nineteenth century as a West Indianstyle residence it was the focal point of a large plantation that stretched deep into the cypress swamps of what is now New Orleans's Bywater neighborhood. Featuring the best Norman trussing in North America it was one of many plantation homes and grand residences that lined the Mississippi downriver from the French Quarter. A working farm until the 1800s its lands were eventually absorbed into the expanding city. After years of prosperity the entire area of the Ninth Ward now known as Bywater sank into poverty and neglect. This is the story of the rise fall and eventual resurrection of one of America's finest extant examples of West Indian Creole architecture and of the entire neighborhood of which it is an anchor. Through meticulous study of archives and archeology the author presents fascinating insights on how residents of this working plantation actually lived. Because pre-Civil War U.S. censuses never listed more than five enslaved persons all of whom worked in the house the plantation appears to have depended mainly on hired labor both African American and Irish. Eventually these groups came to populate the new neighborhood along with immigrants from Germany and then new migrants from the countryside. Profusely illustrated with heretofore unidentified historic photographs and plans and with color images by master architectural photographer Robert S. Brantley this book will equally interest inquisitive tourists and long-term residents of the Gulf South historic preservationists and urbanists in search of insights on successful redevelopment architecture and history buffs and enthusiasts of one of America's most beloved and storied cities. 156 pages approx. 8 x 8 inches 86 color and b&w illustrations index. S. Frederick Starr Washington D.C. is chair of the Central AsiaCaucasus Institute at John Hopkins University. He is the author of numerous books on New Orleans including New Orleans Unmasqued and Louis Moreau Gottschalk. Original publisher's cloth stamped in gilt; rebacked with most of original spine laid down. Corners lightly worn. Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf. Light foxing and toning heavier in some places. Most images clean though one or two with some light foxing at the edges. Very good. With some of the earliest photographic images from South Africa with a striking portrait of a Basuto Chief. An early photographically illustrated book and the first such book printed on the African continent. The volume was made to commemorate the visit of Alfred Duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha one of Queen Victoria's sons. The book was designed to showcase the colony which had hitherto been viewed in a less than positive light by the general British public. Prince Alfred was well-received by the colonists in South Africa and the volume contains many positive facts about the colony's usefulness to the British Empire. The book includes seventeen images by photographer Joseph Kirkman who was active in South Africa from 1859 to 1870. Some of the images in this volume are photographs of drawings or other artwork but others do capture live scenes along the Prince's route including a grand portrait of the African chief Moshesh and his advisors. The chief is pictured seated in the center of the image dressed in a top hat and suit holding a cane. The man seated next to him glowers at the camera and is draped in an animal pelt and holds a spear. Four men all in Western dress stand arrayed behind them. The images taken from life during the Prince's progress are as follows: Untitled image on the titlepage showing several men next to a rail car full of large rocks. In 1860 Kirkman and Frederick York were employed by the Government and the Harbour Board to photograph the tilting of the first truck of stone off the Breakwater by Prince Alfred. This is presumably an image from that scene. "Graham's Town from the West" "The Reception of the Prince by a Burgher Escort near Queenstown" "The Prince's Interview with the Tambookies" "Moshesh and His Counsellors" "The Prince and His First Wildebeeste" "The Prince's Travelling Equipage" Not in THE TRUTHFUL LENS. A rare and interesting work and notable for being the first photographically illustrated book produced in Africa. unknown

Creating The National Park Service: The Missing Years
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: 1999. Softcover. Brand new book. Two men played a crucial role in the creation and early history of the National Park Service: Stephen T. Mather a public relations genius of sweeping vision and Horace M. Albright an able lawyer and administrator who helped transform that vision into reality. In Creating the National Park Service Albright and his daughter Marian Albright Schenck reveal the previously untold story of the critical "missing years" in the history of the service. During this period 1917 and 1918 Mather's problems with manic depression were kept hidden from public view and Albright his able and devoted assistant served as acting director and assumed Mather's responsibilities. Albright played a decisive part in the passage of the National Park Service Organic Act of 1916; the formulation of principles and policies for management of the parks; the defense of the parks against exploitation by ranchers lumber companies and mining interests during World War I; and other issues crucial to the future of the fledgling park system. 20 Illustrations. Horace M. Albright 1890-1987 was Assistant Director of the National Park Service from 1917 to 1919 became the first NPS superintendent of Yellowstone National Park in July 1919 and was named Director of the National Park Service in 1929. National Parks Beyond The Nation: Global Perspectives On " America's Best Idea"
University of Oklahoma Press Norman: 2016. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. The idea of a national park was an American invention of historic consequences marking the beginning of a worldwide movement" the U.S. National Park Service asserts in its 2006 Management Policies. National Parks beyond the Nation brings together the work of fifteen scholars and writers to reveal the tremendous diversity of the global national park experiencean experience sometimes influencing sometimes influenced by and sometimes with no reference whatever to the United States. Writer and historian Wallace Stegner once called national parks "America's best idea." The contributors to this volume use that exceptionalist claim as a starting point for thinking about an international history of national parks. They explore the historical interactions and influencesintellectual political and materialwithin and between national park systems in Canada New Zealand South Africa Indonesia Antarctica Brazil and other countries. What is the role of science in the history of these preserves Of politics What purposes do they serve: Conservation Education Reverence toward nature Tourist pleasure People have thought differently about national parks at different times and in different places; and neat physical boundaries have been disrupted by wandering animals human movements the spread of disease and climate change. Viewing parks around the world at various scales and across national frontiers these essays offer a panoptic view of the common and contrasting cultural and environmental features of national parks worldwide. If national parks are as Stegner said "absolutely American" they are no less part of the world at large. National Parks beyond the Nation tells us as much about the multifarious and changing ideas of nature and culture as about the framing of those ideas in geographic temporal and national terms. 3 maps 2 tables. Adrian Howkins is an Associate Professor of History at Colorado State University Fort Collins is author of The Polar Regions: An Environmental History. Jared Orsi is Professor of History at Colorado State University is author of Hazardous Metropolis: Flooding and Urban Ecology in Los Angeles and Citizen Explorer: The Life of Zebulon Pike. MADDOX AMANDA
Ishiuchi Miyako: Postwar Shadows
J. Paul Getty Museum Los Angeles: 2015. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. A maverick in the history of photography Ishiuchi Miyako b. 1947 burst onto the scene in Tokyo during the mid-1970s at a time when men dominated the field in Japan. Working prodigiously over the last forty years she has created an impressive oeuvre and quietly influenced generations of photographers born in the postwar era. Recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 2014 Ishiuchi ranks as one of the most significant photographers working in Japan today. Spurred by her contentious relationship with her hometown Yokosukasite of an important American naval base since 1945Ishiuchi chose that city as her first serious photographic subject. Grainy moody and deeply personal these early projects established her career. This choice of subject also defined the beginning of Ishiuchi's extended exploration of the American occupation and the shadows it cast over postwar Japan. Ishiuchi has since addressed the theme of occupation both indirectlythrough her photographs of scars skin and other markers of time on the human bodyand more explicitly with her images of garments and accessories once owned by victims of the atomic blast in Hiroshima. Essays featured in this volume reveal the past as the wellspring of Ishiuchi's work and the present moment as her principal subject. Ishiuchi Miyako: Postwar Shadowswhich includes a selection of more than 100 worksis published on the occasion of an exhibition by the same name on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center Los Angeles from October 5 2015 to February 21 2016. Amanda Maddox is assistant curator in the Department of Photographs at the J. Paul Getty Museum. 192 pages 9 1/2 x 10 inches140 color illustrations. J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles: 2015 hardcover
