Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A student of the painter Wilhelm von Dietz (1839-1907), Breyer worked in Munich, Seeon and Berlin and taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart from 1914 to 1933. - Some small ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Jules Breynat (1821-1910), docteur en droit et avocat, il fréquenta les Clubs lors de la révolution de 1848, mais devint vite un partisan de l'ordre. Dans le présent ouvrage, il indique en préface : [.] Je n'ai pas la prétention de faire l'histoire du socialisme ni la réfutation de ses doctrines. Ce sont de simples portraits. Signature heavy stock 5" X 3" card n.p. 1972 March 3. Fine. With original envelope. Accompanied by a superb original black-and-white 1947 news agency glossy photograph International News Photo 9¼" X 8". Depicts Bricker with Indiana senator William Jenner at the latter's desk. Margin text reads in part "Sen. Wm. E. Jenner. is shown packing his personal papers preparing to make a hasty exit when the Senate adjourns sometime tonight. while Sen. John W. Bricker. confers with Jenner." A choice vintage image scarce and desireable in itself. unknown

This influential American rabbi first served in Toronto where he joined the reform movement and founded the "Canadian Jewish Review"; in 1925 he became rabbi at Congregation Anshe Chesed in Cleveland serving until his death; among his many noteworthy activities such as debating Clarence Darrow in 1928 was supervising Jewish armed forces chaplains during World War Two; even touring the fronts at FDR's request to inspect and visit all chaplains -- making him the first rabbi ever awarded the Medal of Merit for his war efforts; author many books such as "The History of Jews in Cincinnati." This popular American cartoonist and illustrator trained under "Flash Gordon" cartoonist Alex Raymond before taking over that strip briefly and also the "Secret Agent X-9" strip; co-founded the Famous Artists School; in 1969 he was elected to the Society of Illustrators' Hall of Fame. Signed Postal Cover 6½" X 3½" n.p. n.y. NOT a First Day Cover but a mint example of Briggs' 1959 7-cent "Jupiter" balloon stamp is affixed at upper right. U.S. senators from Indiana. Most unusual item: single leaf 7¼" X 9¼" probably the frontispiece of an Indiana state history captioned "Indiana" at the top. Below this is a charming stone lithographed pastoral scene depicting a shirtless man in the foreground chopping down a tree vast fields extending behind him; the sun is just breaking over the horizon and a bull is romping playfully. Facsimile signatures of Indiana senators Albert S. White and Edward A. Hannegan appear below this. Their Senate terms overlapped from 1845 to '49 thus dating this frontispiece. Their two successors Bright who served 1845-62 and Whitcomb 1849-52 have each signed boldly beneath the facsimiles. Very good. Moderately foxed throughout but overall attractive. An interesting pairing of Hoosiers on an appropriate if odd item. Whitcomb died in office while Bright was expelled from the Senate for treason. unknown

Envious note to a friend about to visit the United States; suggests a couple contacts although he comments "I have few friends or acquaintances in the States to whom I can give or send letters of introduction" one of them financier Cyrus W. I believe other depart's are the same. The road is terribly crowded & full of disappointment. I advise you to stay in Birmingham - you will more easily get 10 good places there than one in a Gvt. depart't. To put your name down for a nomination would be of no use. You would be at the bottom of a long list, & should probably never be reached till you were beyond the age at which you could be admitted. I am sorry to give you no hope that I can help you [...]". - The Liberal statesman Bright, hailed as one of the greatest orators of his generation, served as MP for Birmingham from 1858 to 1889. In 1868 he had entered Gladstone's cabinet as President of the Board of Trade. - From the collection of John Henderson (1862-1938), the long-serving secretary of the National Liberal Club.
