Lettre en deux pages adressée à "Monsieur Heugel" sur papier à en-tête de l'établissement thermal et casino de Luchon, en Haute Garonne, accompagnée d'une illustration de deux personnages en habits traditionnels en train d'admirer un paysage. Dans cette lettre ,il prévient Henri Heugel qu'il vient d'égarer une partition, partition orchestre de l'ouverture de Sigurd. Il souhaiterait en recevoir une nouvelle. Signed Commemorative Envelope
Brown was an American ace who downed six enemy aircraft in 57 missions in his P-51 Mustang; Knoke was a Knight's Cross recipient a German Luftwaffe ace who in more than 2000 missions claimed 33 downed aircraft and another 19 unconfirmed kills penning the 1953 Luftwaffe classic "I Flew for the Fuhrer." Signed Commemorative Envelope 6½" X 4¼" cancelled on the 60th anniversary of the Royal Air Force's 207 Squadron on 15 November 1976. Fine. Left half consists of a pictorial color cachet showing "Lancasters of No. 207 Squadron Northern France 1944" and inset portrait of "Marshall of the Royal Air Force the Lord Tedder of Glenguin" with text at right detailing the flight on which this envelope was flown which two of the crew have signed. Special postal cancellation. At top center Knoke signs boldly in black fineline. Beneath this Brown signs in red fineline adding "Lt. Col. USAF Ret / 20th F.G. 55th F.S. / King's Cliffe England." Limitation statement inkstamped on verso notes this is number 6 of 10 examples produced. unknown

This American cartoonist supposedly created more than 24 comic strips including "The Inventor" which ran from 1904 to 1914 and assisted with four others; one cartooning historian describes him as "an absolute whirling dervish at the drawing board producing more material for the daily pages than anyone except the great George Frink'; he worked for the "Chicago Daily News" ca. 1908-24 and the "New York Herald-Tribune" 1925-42. On a heavy stock 5" X 3" card the cartoonist pens "Sincerely yours" and signs in cursive adding his cartoonist's printed stylized "T. Brown" alongside. Very good. Faintly age toned with mounting traces on verso. Along the bottom edge is typed "Cartoonist 'Chicago Daily News'. / April 29 1922." Very uncommon. unknown

Huge and bold "All good wishes to my friend / Donald Burnell / Joe E. Brown / 6/22/60" in blue ballpoint on an irregular-trimmed roughly-triangular 5¼" width at top X 4" height slip bearing "JOE E. BROWN" printed in green at the top -- presumably trimmed from a sheet of his letterhead. Very good. Other than odd shape quite handsome. Accompanied by a superb vintage sepia-tone heavy stock 5" X 7" matte-finish photograph bearing a preprinted signature and inscription at the bottom -- a head-and-shoulders portrait of a smiling young Brown as he appeared in the 1930s the kind of image sent out by the studios in bulk at the time in response to fan mail. This popular Scottish physician and essayist gained more reknown as a man of letters than a man of medicine though he did become a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1847; friend of Thackeray and Twain he collected his essays into "Rab and His Friends" 1859 "Marjorie Fleming" 1863 and "John Leech and Other Papers" 1882 though he's mainly remembered for the 3-volume "Horae Subsecivae" "Leisure Hours" 1859. Both families had been exiled from Ireland in the aftermath of Tyrone's Rebellion. A second-generation "Wild Goose", he became one of Austria's most capable military leaders in the War of the Austrian Succession and the Seven Years' War. He was mortally wounded in the 1757 Battle of Prague.

I hope to be in Paris a little later in the year so perhaps there may be a chance then if things are seasonably quiet!" Boldly signed "William Brownlow / Lord Lurgan." Remarquable exemplaire de ce rare recueil de poésie, réunissant dans ses dédicaces trois célèbres français d'Algérie : Edmond Brua, Gaston Ry (pseudonyme de René Rostagny) et Georges Laffly. Edmond Brua (1901-1977) était un journaliste et poète, originaire de Philippeville (Algérie). Ce sont ses oeuvres inspirées du Pataouète, le jargon alors parlé en Algérie française, qui lui apportèrent la notoriété, en particulier sa Parodie du Cid et ses Fables bônoises. Title printed in black over gold. XLib. Beveled edges. Extremities lightly worn with slight loss. Early ownerships on title. Rear flyleaf has drawings by Arthur S. Veit, dated 5/14/1899, showing a military cadet with rifle in profile, and the head of a young lady with hat. Arthur Stobo Veit (1884-1912), son of a manager of the Standard Oil Company, attended Montclair Military College, Pennsylvania Military Academy, and the Hill School before going to Columbia as part of the Class of 1907. These drawings were probably done while he was at the PA Military Academy. He left Columbia in 1905 to join the Standard Oil Company. In 1912 he committed suicide on a New York street, the cause of his distrees was a great mystery at the time - and remains so today. POETRY BOX 4

Bedankt sich bei Herrn Hübner für Zusendungen, spricht über die "Geburtswehen" in Bezug auf das "Kind der deutschen Einheit" und stellt Überlegungen zu seiner eigenen Rolle in der Geschichte an: "Mit Gewalt dringen die ernsten Fragen heran u. ihre Lösung wird eher gewaltige Geburtswehen nicht einiglich seyen. Ich fürchte es gibt dann Hebammen zu viele um das Kind der deutschen Einheit [...] aus dem Mutterschoße zu hohlen". 1848 wurde Bruck Mitglied der Nationalversammlung in Frankfurt am Main, 1848 bis 1851 war er Handelsminister im Kabinett Schwarzenberg. - Eine Ecke ausgerissen mit Papier unterlegt (ohne Textverlust). Spuren alter Faltung, teilweise Einrisse an Knickfalten und kleines Loch. Eigenhändig adressiert an "Herrn Hübner Redacteur der allg. oest. Zeitung". Beiliegend faksimilierte Visitenkarte mit zwei eigenhändigen Zeilen.

Fine collection of letters and other documents relating to the life and work of the founder of the Trieste stock exchange and the Austrian Lloyd. Contains letters from and to Heinrich Friedjung, Friedrich Baron Bruck and Ignaz Baron Plener. Various places, c. 1860-1913 [?].
Various sizes. 173½ pp. on 107 ff. (correspondence) and 31½ pp. on 24 ff. (other documents). Karl von Bruck was Austrian minister of commerce, reformed the postal and consular systems, instigated the development of Austrian trade law and created the Trieste marine agency and stock exchange. He did not live to materialize his plans for a central European commercial union which was to bring the customs, currency and tax systems of the German states and Austria into agreement. Wrongly accused of having personally enriched himself in his office, he was dismissed as minister of finance by the Emperor and took his own life.

Bestens danke, bin ich ebenfalls zu der Überzeugung gekommen, dass die Original Einfassung im Opernhaus für unsere Zwecke ganz unpassend ist. Finden wir, weder in Wien noch in Muenchen eine Umrahmung deren Haupt-Motiv aus musikalischen Instrumenten bestehen müsste, so lassen wir es bei dem Schwind'schen Original-Format für alle Ausgaben. Ich spreche Ihnen wiederholt meinen Dank aus, für Ihre freundliche Theilnahme in meinem Befinden; Jetzt verbessert sich's so, daß ich mich der Hoffnung hingeben darf nach München in künftiger Woche zurückkehren zu können […]". - Auf Briefpapier mit gepr. Monogramm. - Bruckmann gründete 1858 in Frankfurt/Main den Verlag für Kunst und Wissenschaft und erzielte mit der Herausgabe von Wilhelm Kaulbachs Goethe-Galerie einen ersten verlegerischen Erfolg. 1861 wählte er Stuttgart, 1863 München als neuen Standort des Unternehmens. Er verlegte, reproduktionstechnisch jeweils auf dem neuesten Stand, vor allem archäologische und kunstgeschichtliche Bildwerke.

Large 4to. 3 pp. on bifolium. To his friend Rodolf Weinwurm, the conductor of the Wiener Singakademie, about the premiere of his Mass No. 1 in D-minor in the Linz cathedral and the Redoutensaal, expressing his surprise that the latter was packed with listeners despite the seriousness of his composition, and mentioning that his concert was attended by Josef, Archduke of Austria - He intends to have a clean copy of the full score made, which he would like to send to the Weinwurm to deliver to the critic Eduard Hanslick and the composer and conductor Johann Herbeck, hoping the latter would agree to have it performed in the Vienna Musikverein, as a performance in the church would require too much rehearsal. - The mass, which was highly successful both among the critics and the audience, was a breakthrough for Bruckner as a composer. It was performed in Vienna on 10 February 1867, conducted by Johann Herbeck and with Bruckner playing the organ.

An einen "hochwolgeborenen Herrn Director", d. i. der Komponist und Dirigent Eduard Kremser, der von 1869 bis 1899 als Chormeister des Wiener Männergesangvereins wirkte: "Bauend auf Ihre Güte bitte ich innig, mich wissen lassen zu wollen: Wann und wo findet die letzte Probe von 'Helgoland' statt! Derselben möchte ich doch so gerne beiwohnen, wenn irgend möglich [...]". - "Helgoland", Bruckners weltliche Kantate für Männerchor und großes Orchester in g-Moll, war 1893 als Auftragswerk für die 50-Jahr-Feier des Wiener Männergesang-Vereins komponiert worden. Da Bruckner seine Neunte Sinfonie unvollendet hinterließ, gilt "Helgoland" als das letzte vollendete Werk des Komponisten, das einige Tage nach diesem Brief, am 8. Oktober, unter der Leitung von Eduard Kremser uraufgeführt wurde.

Zusammen (1+½ =) 1½ SS. auf 2 Bll. (Gr.-)qu.-8vo. Die Karte mit eh. Adresse. Mit einigen Beilagen (s. u.). An den Journalisten und Hörfunkintendanten Franz Wallner-Basté (1896-1984) mit einem Gruß aus dem Parkhotel Bender, "wo man sich viel zu viel aufhält, weil es draussen viel zu viel regnet" (Bildpostkarte v. [31. VII. 1956]) und mit Dank "für Ihre guten Wünsche, die ich herzlich erwidere" (Br. v. 30. VIII. 1956). - Der aus Wien stammende Bruckner studierte Philologie, Musik, Medizin und Rechtswissenschaften, ließ sich in Berlin nieder, arbeitete als Lektor, schrieb für expressionistische Zeitschriften und gab 1917/18 die literarische Zeitschrift "Marsyas" heraus. 1923 gründete er das Berliner Renaissance-Theater und übernahm dessen Leitung, bis er 1927 Direktor des Theaters am Kurfürstendamm wurde. Nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten emigrierte er über Österreich nach Frankreich und 1936 nach New York, wo er bei verschiedenen Exilzeitschriften mitarbeitete. 1951 nach Westberlin zurückgekehrt, war er seit 1953 am Schillertheater und am Schloßparktheater als Dramaturg tätig. - Franz Wallner-Basté lebte als Musik- und Theaterkritiker (u. a. für die "BZ am Mittag", die "Vossische Zeitung" und die "Berliner Morgenpost") in Berlin und wurde 1932 Leiter der Literarischen Abteilung des Südwestdeutschen Rundfunks in Frankfurt a. M. "1933 als politisch unzuverlässig entlassen, ging er einer dramaturgischen, literarischen und journalistischen Tätigkeit nach" (DBE) und wurde nach Kriegsende Leiter des Kulturamtes Berlin-Zehlendorf, Intendant des RIAS Berlin und seit 1948 Radiokritiker des "Münchner Merkur"; 1951 übernahm er die Leitung der Abteilung Kunst in der Senatsverwaltung für Volksbildung in Berlin. Er veröffentlichte u. a. "Verdi. Eine Biographie in Briefen" (1945) und "Verdi aus der Nähe" (1979) und war auch als Drehbuchautor und Übersetzer tätig. - Beiliegend einige Bll. Zeitungsausschnitte (darunter einer mit eh. Widmung und U. Bruckners, dat. September 1953), Prospektmaterial und ein gedr. Partezettel des am 5. Dezember 1958 verstorbenen Dramatikers.

Postcard, approx. 100 x 150 mm. To Richard Otto Frankfurter, hoping to meet in Paris. - Frankfurter, a left-liberal politician, was, like Tagger, forced to flee Hitler. He ultimately settled in South America. - Punch holes where once preserved in a collector's album, with two words affected, slight rumpling of corners.

An den Bildhauer Georg Zell (1810-1878): “Ich beeilte mich Deinen Auftrag zu erfüllen eben war Herr Hauser bey mir welcher mir sagte daß er ein Stück Stein zu zwei Platten nach der von Dir angegebenen Größe besitze. Beide würden ungeschliffen 24 fl geschliffen aber 36 fl kosten, das verpacken 2 fl [...] Ich befinde mich ziemlich wohl habe die Tage auch wider einen Auftrag von König Ludwig erhalten, nämlich für verstorbenen Direktor Gärtner ein Monument auf dem neuen Kirchhof zu machen, es wird zwar ganz einfach, ein in byzantinischer Form gehaltener Grabstein mit einem Christus und seinem Portrait in Relief [...]”. - Nach erstem Unterricht bei Konrad Eberhard (1768-1859) studierte Brugger bei Ludwig von Schwanthaler (1802-1848) an der Münchner Kunstakademie, der seinem begabten Schüler die selbständige Arbeit an den für Walhalla bestimmten Standbildern der Walküren ermöglichte und ihn Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) in Rom empfahl, “wo Bruggers Talent für Komposition und vollendete Formgebung (1841-43) zur Reife kam. In Brugger fand der ideale Geist und großartige Schönheitsfluß der Antike einen hellen Nachklang bei gleichmäßig inniger Wärme und Durchbildung” (Thieme/Becker V, 112). Auf Geheiß König Ludwigs I. und Maximilians II. schuf Brugger zahlreiche Kolossalstatuen, Büsten für die Ruhmeshalle (u. a. die Georg von Reichenbachs), eine Statue des Baumeisters Klenze, des Philosophen F.W. v. Schelling u.v.m. - Mit gebr. Siegel und Poststempel. - Aus dem Besitz und in bedruckter Originalmappe der berühmten Autographensammlung des österreichischen Industriellen Adalbert Freiherr von Lanna (1836-1909).
