Wie der eröffnenden Widmung ("Baden am Weihnachts Abend 1868") zu entnehmen, wurde das vorliegende Buch zum Christfest 1868 der damals vierzehnjährigen Franziska von ihrer Mutter Gabriele (1827-1904) geschenkt. Die Tochter von Gabriele und Graf Arthur Anton Ferdinand von Bylandt (1854-1915) hat es in den folgenden Jahren dazu verwendet, zahlreiche Zitate festzuhalten, meist von Dichtern wie Goethe, Schiller und Heine, Klopstock, Rückert und Wordsworth, aber auch von Kaiser Maximilian von Mexiko, "Großpapa Stolberg" (d. i. Christian Ernst St., 1783-1846) und "Urgroßvater Stolberg" (d. i. Friedrich Leopold St., 1750-1819). Interessantes Dokument der Literaturrezeption im Rahmen der von spätaufklärerischen Motiven geleiteten Adelserziehung in der zweiten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts. - Bindung gebrochen. Einige lose Bll.; beiliegend u. a. der Totenschein der am 6. Dezember 1929 an "Verkalkung der Gehirn- und Kranzgefäße" verstorbenen Gräfin.

This American poet published his first collection "An Ode to Harvard and Other Poems" in 1907 acting as editor at "McClure's Magazine" briefly and taking part in the famed Spectra literary hoax in 1916; in 1922 he relocated to Santa Fe and became a mainstay of the rich literary scene there publishing poetry collections until 1960. ANS 1p 5¼" X 7 3/4" New York NY 1917 September 26. Addressed to Ms. Stearne. Good plus. Inoffensive mounting traces on verso cause tiny ¼" paper loss at upper right; several small paper losses along original vertical center fold not affecting text. On pale grey pictorial letterhead of Hotel St. Francis in San Francisco the poet pens a brief cryptic but cordial note in thick black ink: "A long while after and in a rattling hurry -- but with appreciative thanks and good wishes!" and signs nicely beneath. An attractive example despite noted flaws. unknown

On his personal letterhead Bynner thanks an admirer for birthday greetings adding "Before leaving Mexico we out our house there in fairly good order so that I hope the next time I am there instead of being with carpenters masons and painters I shall be busy with a manuscript." Boldly signed in black ink. Accompanied by a delightful 7" X 9½" sepia-tone printed photograph a half-length right-facing portrait in bow tie and hat. Published in Volume 7 Number 4 of the literary magazine "The Mentor" 1919 with biographical text on verso. A superb pair. unknown

Indeed, the marriage lasted but a year, as Byron was given to fits of anger and maintained an incestuous relationship with his older half-sister Augusta Leigh. The couple separated in March 1816. Their only child, Augusta Ada Byron (Countess of Lovelace), was a gifted mathematician and is credited with creating the first computer program.

To an unidentified Lord, contributing 10 pounds towards the erection of a new chapel: "In compliance with the wish you have expressed to me in so kind a manner, I will settle an endowment of Ten Pounds on the Minister of Petton. I should have great satisfaction in doubling that sum, if the New Chapel were open to the use of Christians of a different denomination, as is the case with Protestant Churches abroad - but as long as the present exclusion system is continued I shall feel that Roman Catholics & Dissenters have likewise a claim to the Landowner's assistance. Your Lordship will I trust pardon me for giving this explanation in order to account for the smallness of my contribution. 4to. Altogether (¾+¾ =) 1½ pp. on 4 ff. With integral address leaves. These two evocative letters, written in Italian and in the hand of Count Pietro Gamba (the brother of his beloved Teresa Guiccioli), were written while Byron was making his final preparations for his voyage to Greece, where he was to die nine months later "that Greece may still be free". Their addressee is the Greek patriot Giorgio Vitali (1776-1854) at Leghorn, from an ancient Venetian family and the commander of the Ionic vessel "Hercules" that Byron wanted to take. (I) In the first letter (July 7), Byron is rescheduling his departure to July 12: "[...] Capisco che il momento del forte conflitto è giunto [...]". (II) In the second (July 9), stating that in order not to lose a moment of his time, he has resolved not to make a stop at Leghorn except to take him on board along with an other English gentleman (James Hamilton Browne), and asking Vitali to tell his compatriots to have any despatches and instructions relating to his mission ready for his arrival. - Byron was to bid farewell to Teresa and board the "Hercules" on 13 July. However, his departure was to be delayed by calms, and then a storm. By some accounts, his mood at this time was despondent, almost fatalistic. During the delay he went on shore again to visit the house outside Genoa that he had shared with Teresa; as her brother recalled: "His conversation was somewhat melancholy on our way to Albaro, he spoke much of his past life, and of uncertainty of the future, 'where', said he, 'shall we be in a year?'" (quoted by Leslie A. Marchand, Byron: A Biography [1957] III, 1089). They eventually set sail from Genoa on the 16th. During the couple of days spent at Leghorn, Byron received a verse-tribute from Goethe and dashed off his famous reply: "I sailed from Genoa some days ago - was driven back by a Gale of Wind - and have since sailed again - and arrived here (Leghorn) this morning to receive on board some Greek passengers for their struggling country" (22 July 1823). They set sail once again on 24 July, and finally reached Cephalonia on 2 August. - In fine condition. Not published in Marchand's edition of Byron's Letters and Journals (1973-1994).

Ich habe auf beyliegendem Blättchen die Dedication niedergeschrieben, deren Anordnung und Bezeichnung durch verschiedene Schrift ich Ihrer besten Einsicht überlasse. Nun aber muß ich noch eine dringende Bitte beyfügen. Da der Druck des Ganzen wo nicht völlig beendigt, doch seinem Ende nahe ist, so wollte ich Sie ersuchen, mir doch unverzüglich, wenn das Ganze beendigt, ein oder, womöglich, zwey Exemplare von den auf besserem Papier als das gewöhnliche, durch die Post zuzusenden, weil ich dieselben noch ehe andere Exemplare ins Publikum kommen, dem Grosherzog zuvörderst u. seinem Minister zusenden muß. Kondoliert dem Mediziner Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot (1807-1884) zum Tode von dessen Sohn gleichen Namens: "Diese Trauerbotschaft kam mir um so unerwarteter, als ich noch die Woche vorher einen, allerdings schon Ende Februar geschriebenen Brief des Verstorbenen erhalten hatte, worin von irgend einem Unwohlsein keine Rede war [...]". - Bäumler war Assistent in Fürth und an der Erlanger Poliklinik, ging 1863 an das Deutsche Hospital in London, war seit 1866 auch an der Klinik für Brustkrankheiten im Victoria-Park tätig und folgte 1872 einem Ruf als Professor der Klinischen Propädeutik an die Universität Erlangen. Zwei Jahre später wechselte er nach Freiburg, wo er zunächst Direktor der Poliklinik und Professor für Pharmakologie, 1876 Direktor der Medizinischen Klinik sowie Professor für Spezielle Pathologie und Therapie wurde. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums.

On connaît des dessins de Bécan autour de la première guerre mondiale et de l'aviation, peut-être s'agit-il d'un de ces dessins. Peu courant.

8vo (205:130 mm). 3 pp. on a single bifolium. Address panel to verso. To the wife of a Parisian police official, making enquiries about the female perpetrator of an acid attack on an unfaithful lover. A very intriguing letter in which the poet, chansonnier and champion of social justice asks for information from the wife of one Brissot-Thivars, employed by Préfecture de Police, on behalf of the family of a young girl imprisoned at St. Lazare for having thrown vitriol in the face of an unfaithful lover. Béranger seems sympathetic, and had obviously been approached by the girl’s family as a result of his reputation as a friend to the unfortunate, especially they young. He writes that the girl, the daughter of a General who had been cruelly treated by the Restoration, and who was previously of good character finds herself imprisoned with common prostitutes. Béranger seems to be taking advantage of his friend Madame Brissot-Thivars' connections, and requests discretion, asking that his name is not mentioned in connection with the affair and that M. Brissot-Thivars knows nothing of his enquiry. He writes that if she cannot help she may simply burn the letter. This "crime passionnel" of vitriol-throwing reached epidemic proportions in Paris later in the century and caused major social concern. - Four original folds, slight staining, but clean overall. In französischer Sprache an den Historiker und Essayisten Paul Hazard (1878-1944) mit Dank für ein Exemplar seines dreibändigen Werks "Crise de la conscience européenne" (1935), das er bald genauer studieren wolle, ferner mit der Bemerkung, weder lesen noch schreiben zu können, seit er für die Integrität und Perfektion der Sprache verantwortlich ist: "Bien entendu, depuis que je suis chargé de veiller à l'intégrité et au perfectionnement de la langue, il m'est à peu près impossible de lire et d'écrire. Je m'étais cependant bien promis de ne point sacrifier aux tristes nécessités de mon état - ou de mes états - le très vif attrait de curiosité et de sympathie qu'a exercé sur moi, dès que j'en ai appris la publication, votre Crise de la Conscience Européenne. Vous avez fort délicatement devancé mes voeux et decoudé mon dessein en m'envoyant Vos trois volumes. Je vous en remercie de tout coeur. Et le plus tôt possible, tout en songeant à Jullian et aux Gaulois, je vais me mettre, sous votre conduite, à l'étude de tous les dissidents et non-conformistes qui attristèrent la vieillesse de notre Bossuet [...]". S/W-Portrait im ¾-Profil. - Der ungarische Schriftsteller und Dramatiker war seit den 1920er Jahren auch als Drehbuchautor tätig, übersiedelte später nach London und war dort für die London Film Productions von Alexander Korda tätig. Im ersten Jahr der Academy Awards (1929) erhielt Bíró eine Oscar-Nominierung für sein Drehbuch zu Josef von Sternbergs "Sein letzter Befehl", verlor aber zugunsten des zweitnominierten Ben Hecht, der ebenfalls für sein Drehbuch zu einem Film Sternbergs, "Underworld", nominiert worden war.
