The famed English hostess par excellence at age 18 married the 41-year-old Robert Crewe-Milnes at that time The Lord Houghton 1885-95 and later the Earl of Crewe 1895-1911 and Marquess of Crewe 1911-1945 British politician and statesman who served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland 1882-95 Leader of the House of Lords 1908-16 and twice as Lord President of the Council 1905-08 1915-16. ALS written on behalf of and signed for her husband 3pp lettersheet 7½" X 5" n.p. 1907 July 23. Addressed to "My dear George." Near fine. Boldly penned in black ink on letterhead bearing the oval blindstamp at top of first page of "Privy Council Office" the 26-year-old Marchioness of Crew here pens a retained draft of one of her husband's letters noting "Private" at upper left of first page. Interesting if cryptic reading in part: "I need not say that we desire to proceed with great caution in the matters which the Bishop of Birmingham wishes us to discuss tomorrow & that we shall give all due weight to the opinions which you and others express on behalf of Oxford. Nothing very definite I imagine will come of the debate: but it ought to be an interesting discussion. I hope you are tolerably well I wish we could have a tall one of these days." She signs off "sd Crewe" and adds a postscript. Most unusual in this format. unknown

Unpublished prose poem "Libération" written upon Criel’s return from the German POW camp Stalag XI A in May 1945: "Le drapeau rouge flottait sur le coup et la terreur nazie s’écroulait sous les sifflets des enchaînés depuis cinq ans. / Le vendeur de chair humaine, le loueur de bras volés, mené des sentinelles soviétiques, de sa face stupide, baissait la tête sous la huée. / La motorisation étoilée nous menait loin des barbelés ou tant de nos pensées circulaient en circuit fermé. / Meurtri à chaque épine le sang d’Esprit égouttait de nos cœurs d’esclave. / Esclave de chaînes, jamais d’Intelligence, la flamme orphique brillait vigilante et forte dans le cerveaux de quelques uns. / Et ce jour de fête et de Victoire, le brasier enflammait nos poitrines qui hurlaient leur ivresse. / Dans la course effrénée vers la Nation aimée, nous avons salué au passage la Hollande en fête, la Belgique joyeuse, la France heureuse de retrouver ses enfants perdus. / Loin derrière nous, nous laissions la croix maudite, brisée dans ses villes fumantes de vengeance du monde torturé. / Vous tous, nos frères enchaînés, juifs fusillés, déportés au bagne organisé, femmes, vieillards, enfants, martyrs de la rage nazie, je vous salue de la France libérée. / Gloire à Vous, alliés de la Defense de l’Homme et de l’Esprit, Gloire à Vous de Gaulle, Duhamel, Paulhan, Valéry. Les prisonniers des barbelés brisés vous tracent leur merci" (Paris, 12 May 1945). - The poem was attached to the letter from 20 June 1945, written (in French) to an unidentified editor of a literary review, probably the weekly "Arts": "I was very lucky to discover an issue of your review through my master André Gide, whom I have served since I returned from captivity. I hope that the 'discovery‘ of Arts will not appear to you like that of 'Lake Huron': indeed, for us prisoners, every review is new. Re-adaptation is difficult: please have patience with us". Criel announces his intentions of founding a journal for former prisoners of war, "Cahier de Prisonniers", together with Patrice de la Tour du Pin and other writers. He asks the recipient for suitable texts "in order to publish the best". The "Cahier de Prisonniers" was never realized. - Traces of folds and insignificant browning.

An eine Dame, deren Brief und inliegenden Prospekt ihres neuen Buches sie verlegt habe und erst durch den Verlag wieder an deren Adresse gekommen sei: "[...] Allerdings kann ich leider Ihr Buch nicht besprechen, da ich niemals Bücher rezensiere - es liegt mir absolut nicht, ich habe Ihnen dies vermutlich schon einmal geschrieben, als statt meiner Doktor Beringer, einer unserer Freunde, Ihr Buch besprach [...]". - Die aus Bad Dürkheim stammende Schriftstellerin stand in Kontakt zum Kreis um Michael Georg Conrad, in dessen "Gesellschaft für modernes Leben" sie als einziges weibliches Mitglied aufgenommen wurde. 1887 schrieb sie ihre erste Novelle "Das Kind", die in Conrads Monatsschrift "Die Gesellschaft" veröffentlicht wurde. "Mit 'Feierabend. Münchner Arbeiter-Novelle' (1890), einer krassen Milieuschilderung, wurde sie einer großen Leserschaft bekannt. Seit 1888 verheiratet, zog Croissant-Rust mit ihrem Mann 1895 nach Ludwigshafen und kehrte erst 1904 wieder nach München zurück, wo ihr Haus zu einem bekannten literarischen Treffpunkt wurde. 1906 bzw. 1908 veröffentlichte sie ihre beiden Romane 'Die Nann' und 'Winkelquartett'. Ihr 1914 erschienener Zyklus 'Der Tod', ein von Willi Geiger illustrierter literarischer Totentanz, zeigt die Stilentwicklung dieser Dichterin vom Jugendstil bis hin zu vorexpressionistischen Ansätzen" (DBE).

Autograph letter signed ("O Cromwelle"). No place, 3. IV. 1648.
Folio (200 x 306 mm). 2 pp. on a bifolium (written cross- and lengthways, over 700 words in total) with frequent autograph corrections. Laid down on card for reinforcement in the 18th century. To Richard Norton, a leading parliamentarian who had served as a colonel of cavalry in the first civil war and had returned as member of parliament for Hampshire in 1645, seeking to expedite the marriage of his son Richard Cromwell to Dorothy Maijor (1627-76), as the country descended into the Second Civil War. - Dorothy was the daughter of Richard Maijor, an obscure member of the Hampshire gentry. It was probably Norton who had introduced Cromwell to Maijor, and he subsequently served as intermediary in the negotiations, which began in February 1648 and were not concluded until May the following year. Although Cromwell is known to have expressed doubts about the "godliness" of an alternative, more lucrative match, monetary concerns were evidently central to his consideration of Dorothy's own suitability. Cromwell's detailed discussion of such matters offers a fascinating insight into both his financial and domestic arrangements: - "Mr Maior desired 400£ p anum of inheritance lyinge in Cambridge shire and Norfolke to bee presently settled and to be for maintenance, wherein I desired to be advised by my wife [...] Having beene enformed by Mr Robinson that Mr Maior did upon a former match offer to settle the mannor wherein hee lived, and to give 2000£ in monie, I did insist upon that, and doe desire itt may not be with difficulty, the monie I shall neede for my two little wenches, and thereby I shall free my sonn from beinge charge with them. Mr Maior parts with nothing in present but that monie, saving thir board, wch I should not bee unwilling to give them to enyoy the comfort of their society [...] Truly the land to bee settled both what the Parliament gives mee, and my owne, is very little lesse than 3000£ per anum all thinges considered. If I bee rightly enformed. And a lawyer of Lincolns Inn having searched all the Marquess of Worcesters writings wch were taken att Ragland and sent for by the Parliament and this gentleman appointed by the committee to search the sayd writings, assures mee, there is noe scruple concerning the title, and itt soe fell out that this gentleman whoe searched was my owne lawyer, a very godly able man, and my deere friend, wch I reckon noe smale mercy, hee is alsoe possest of the the writings for mee". - His son's marriage to Dorothy produced four children who survived into adulthood, but ended unhappily, as Richard went into semi-voluntary exile on the continent in 1660 following the Restoration, after which the couple did not see each other again. The "two little wenches" are Cromwell's daughters Mary and Frances, who by their own respective marriages later became Countess Fauconberg and Lady Russell. Cromwell was close to Norton and dubbed him "Idle Dick", deploying the nickname towards the end of the letter in a moment of friendly humour ("I know thou art an idle fellow, but prithee neglect mee not now"). - Primary source material for Cromwell's activities during the chaotic spring of 1648 is rare: parliamentary diaries for the period are fragmentary, and Cromwell's whereabouts "are not generally known" (ODNB). Charles made his first attempt at escape from Carisbrooke Castle on 20 March, and the rapid spread of royalist uprisings will have required Cromwell to travel swiftly and widely across the country. In May he fought his first battle in full command, at Preston, during which the invading Scottish force was decisively defeated. By January 1649, having outmanoeuvred Fairfax to see through the trial and execution of the king, he was the single most powerful figure in England. - Old folds; 18th century manuscript docket. Brummer versprach mir die evtl. erscheinenden günstigen Kritiken zu zuschicken, es kam aber bis jetzt keine, jedenfalls waren sie bis auf Ihre liebenswürdige Beurteilung alle schlecht. Ich bedauerte sehr, daß ich Sie nicht mehr zu sehen bekam, auch hätte ich Sie bestimmt am Tage des Concerts früh noch besucht, wenn Loewe mich nicht mehrmals um 10 Uhr hätte bitten lassen zu einer Probe mit Orgel.
