Document signed ("Elizabeth R"). No place, 24. VIII. 1562.
Three vellum membranes. Later endorsements, a few early ink marginal markings and underlinings, substantial fragment of Great Seal in white wax pendant on original vellum tag, ink somewhat faded on first membrane, some light staining, seal discoloured and worn. Framed and glazed. An indenture detailing the exchange of lands between the crown and Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk, signed three times by the Queen, recording that the Duke will "sell geve and graunte unto our Soveraigne Ladie the Quene All those his Mannors & Lordshippes of Chesworth and Sedgewicke [...] in the County of Sussex [...] also all that mannor Lordshipp and Forest of St Leonard and all ground and Soyle of the same Forest And also all those his Parkes of Bewbushe and Shelley", and related lands and rights, in exchange for lands in royal gift including the "Celle of Sainte Leonard in her county of Norfolk" and associated lands and buildings "neare unto the Citie of Norwich", Norfolk lands formerly of Wymondham Abbey, lands in Essex (Wigborough, Saltcote, Tollesbury) that were formerly "assigned to the late Ladie Anne of Cleves" and also lands in "Pitchesey" (Pitsea) in the same county, the manor of Dowdike in Lincolnshire (previously of Crowland Abbey), and lands of Newenham Abbey in Devon. The indenture then lists the extensive debts of the Duke to the crown, further detailing that a portion of this debt is discharged by the value of the woodland hereby sold to the crown, and commands the exchequer to produce a new bond for the residue of the debt, being a mere £1823 15s. 5 3/4d. Signed by the Queen at the head of each membrane, additionally signed at the foot by the Lord Treasurer William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester ("Winchester"), the under-treasurer Richard Sackville, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Walter Mildmay. - Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (1538-72), was the head of the powerful Howard family. He was a Privy Councillor, had commanded English forces in Scotland at the beginning of Elizabeth's reign, and was one of the greatest land-owners in the land, with estates centred on Norfolk. The agreement with the crown that is formalized in this document saw enormous tracts of land near Horsham in Sussex - including the 12 square miles of St Leonard's forest - conveyed to the crown. Norfolk gained considerable land in return, primarily former monastic land scattered across four counties, but - and this was probably of greater importance to him - he also saw his overall debt to the crown, which had been more that £6500, reduced by some £4680. The counterpart of this indenture remains in the Exchequer (The National Archives, E 211/39). Less than ten years after this agreement was made, Norfolk was executed for treason for conspiring with Mary, Queen of Scots. His son and heir, Philip, Earl of Arundel, was permitted to inherit most of his estates.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). 1 page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau: "'Form und Inhalt!' Streit für Müssige. Dem Schöpferischen ist es dasselbe, wenn er oft auch glaubt, das eine oder andere bevorrechtet zu haben. Das Werk selbst widerspricht seiner Theorie [...]". - Starting out with funerary monuments in his native Dortmund, Elkan went on to design the Knesset Menorah in Jerusalem, his best-known work, as well as various monuments, busts, and medals, before emigrating to London in 1935. In 1895 he was a founder member of the football club that later became Eintracht Dortmund. - Traces of a postmark. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

This successful Ohio-born industrialist investor and businessman practiced law and entered politics in New Mexico serving in Congress 1873-77; he served in the Union Army during the Civil War father and brother joined the Confederacy and was filled with disgust over the carnage and cruelty he witnessed so when Benjamin Harrison appointed him Secretary of War in 1891 no one felt the irony more than he but he served until 1893; later he served West Virginia as U.S. Senator 1895-1911. Big bold "With regards of / S.B. Elkins / Nov 10./85" on a 5 3/4" X 2" heavy stock buff slip n.p. Very good. Bit of irregular inoffensive offsetting from long-ago acidic contact. Judging from the paper stock almost certainly the top portion of a pamphlet likely of a speech Elkins gave such as the 1885 "The Industrial Question in the United States" an address he gave before the Alumni Association of the University of the State of Missouri June 3 1885 published in 36 pages by Styles & Cash in New York. A nice example. unknown

New Britain CT 1887. No Binding. Very Good. This is a handwritten letter dated 1887 from Ella Wheeler Wilcox to a reader who evidently inquired about a poem she had seen somewhere. Ella replied that she did not believe it was one of hers but asked to see it and says she will return it. Written from New Britain CT on a sheet of folded 8x10 paper partially split at folds otherwise quite nice. Also included is the book that the note was found in "Poems of Power" 1903 edition Book is NOT signed. <br/> <br/> unknown

Bedankt sich bei dem kaiserlichen Rat Oskar Berl (1873-1934) für Neujahrswünsche. - Von 1901 bis 1918 gehörte Ellenbogen für die Sozialdemokratische Arbeiterpartei dem Reichsrat an, 1918-34 der Provisorischen Nationalversammlung bzw. dem Nationalrat. Bei den Internationalen Sozialistenkongressen (Zweite Internationale) war er mehrfach Vortragender. 1919 war er Unterstaatssekretär für Handel und Gewerbe, Industrie und Bauten, 1920 wurde er Staatssekretär und Präsident der Staatskommission für Sozialisierung. Im Februar 1934 wurde Ellenbogen verhaftet, aber nach kurzer Zeit wieder freigelassen. Ebenso erging es ihm im März 1938. Am 1. Mai 1938 konnte er Wien verlassen und floh zunächst nach Frankreich, 1940 zu Fuß über die Pyrenäen nach Lissabon und schließlich weiter in die USA. Von 1943 bis 1945 gehörte er dem Vorstand des Austrian Labor Committees (ALC) um Friedrich Adler an, das als Nachfolgeorganisation der Auslandsvertretung der österreichischen Sozialisten (AVOES) galt. - Auf Briefkarte mit gedr. Im Februar 1934 wurde Ellenbogen verhaftet, aber nach kurzer Zeit wieder freigelassen. Ebenso erging es ihm im März 1938. Am 1. Mai 1938 konnte er Wien verlassen und floh zunächst nach Frankreich, 1940 zu Fuß über die Pyrenäen nach Lissabon und schließlich weiter in die USA. Von 1943 bis 1945 gehörte er dem Vorstand des Austrian Labor Committees (ALC) um Friedrich Adler an, das als Nachfolgeorganisation der Auslandsvertretung der österreichischen Sozialisten (AVOES) galt.

TLS 1p 8½" X 11" Boston MA 1913 December 23. Addressed to Hamilton Holt editor of the "New York Independent." Near fine. Mounting traces on verso. On letterhead of the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company the newly-named president and chairman begs off writing a newspaper article: ".until the company can get its affairs adjusted with the Federal authorities and its finances on a better basis I have hardly any time for other matters." Prolific Missouri author of historical romances such as "Fran" "Lahoma" "Wolves of Holland" and "Stork's Nest." Two items: First a TNS 1p 8½" X 11" Plattsburg MO 1923 January 22. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. Near fine. Nice note to an admirer: "Yours. finds me in my winter home far from my library so I cannot send the MS.-page of any published novel. However I inclose a page from my last book not as yet announced named but only tentatively 'Tandy Sees the World.' . The MS. notes for revision are in shorthand of my devising." Bold full signature. Second is the aforementioned page a TMS 1p 8½" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. On thin onion-skin type paper typed in purple ink this nice double-spaced typescript opens with characteristic Ellis prose: "The younger man stared at him perplexedly puzzled less by the dancing eyes which seemed scintillating with a rush of sparks blown in a wind than by the enigmatic utterances of the kindly mouth." Crossouts additions and deletions penned throughout including several lines added to the verso of the leaf. In the left margin vertically he writes "First draft of novel of 1922-1923 / J. Breckenridge Ellis / All rights reserved." Ellis does not seem to have published a book by this title but whether this title was published under another title warrants further research. Accompanied by Johannsen's original 8½" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. A handsome pair. unknown

This U.S. vice-presidential candidate on the anti-Masonic ticket 1832 with William Wirt for president was a Pennsylvania legislator jurist and attorney general. Brief ALS 1p 8¼" X 13" Harrisburg PA 1817 August 1. Addressed to George Bryan auditor general. Good plus. Rather edgeworn with several edge chips; some archival repairs along right edge. Intriguingly cryptic legal matter written while state attorney general reading: "In the case submitted in your letter of yesterday my first impressions were the same as yours. But upon the reflection & examination of the law I adapt the of Judge Burnside. I could add another reason to those mentioned by the Judge -- one drawn from the word & spirit of the law -- but unless it be desired by the accounting officers I will not enter into a discussion at large of the question." Thomas Burnside 1782-1851 was a Pennsylvania representative and state supreme court associate justice; at the time of this letter he served as president judge of the Luzerne district courts. Worth further research. unknown
