Maderno confirms having received from Giovanni Reatino the sum of 244 scudi, which he has given his uncle Giovanni Fontana toward the building of the Cava Clementina ("a bon conto de la Cava Clementina"). The receipt is counter-signed by Fontana himself ("io Giovanni Fontana approvo quanto di sopra"). - The "Cava Clementina" was a project to canalize the river Velino near Reate, commissioned by Pope Clement VIII between 1596 and 1602 and undertaken by Maderno and Fontana. - Giovanni Fontana was the elder brother of the architect Domenico Fontana (1543-1607), Alessandro Maderno was their nephew and the brother of the architect Carlo Maderno (1556-1629) and the sculptor Stefano Maderno, as well as the uncle of the architect Francesco Borromini. Apart from Gian Lorenzo Bernini, the Fontana-Maderno-Borromini family of architects, originally hailing from Ticino, were the most important builders of Baroque Rome. They not only worked on St. Peter's Basilica, but also on many other Roman churches and palaces, and their works have shaped the face of the Eternal City. Fontana, known as one of the leading hydraulics engineers of his age, was responsible for a great number of Roman wells and Papal projects in water engineering (river regulation, aqueducts, irrigation of the Vatican gardens). - Creased, with traces of folds; some stains; occasional ink corrosion.

Zu ihren Hauptrollen zählten Desdemona, Hedda Gabler und Helena in "Vor Sonnenaufgang". Ihre einzige Filmrolle war die des Fräulein Munk in Walter Reischs "Silhouetten" (1936).

Czekot (?). - Fontana arbeitete seit 1909 als freier Schriftsteller und Theaterrezensent. Er war für zahlreiche, u.a. expressionistische Zeitschriften tätig, schrieb Essays sowie Lyrik und wandte sich gegen die impressionistische Theaterkritik. Der aus Wien stammende Journalist und Dramaturg Hans Nüchtern war seit 1924 Leiter der literarischen Abteilung der RAVAG und unterrichtete auch an der Akademie für Musik und darstellende Kunst sowie am Max Reinhardt-Seminar.

Fontane, Marius, French journalist and historian, secretary of Ferdinand de Lesseps (1838-1914).
Lettre autographe signée ("M. Fontane"). Paris, 9. III. 1898.
8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. Interesting letter to an unnamed recipient, congratulating him on a book that was devoted to members of an institution that Fontane was part of, possibly the Académie de Marseille. Fontane reminisces about the poet Paul Reynier (1832-1856) who had "initiated him to the charms of writing" and was also his predecessor as secretary to Ferdinand de Lesseps. Fontane alludes to the Panama Canal Scandal that was just about to unfold, asserting: "From this point of view, maybe he did right to die early, because he didn't have my robust philosophy and the injustice would have made him cry" (transl.). He also mentions that he assisted in the reception of the "excellent Abbé Bayle" and, more recently, that he met the recipient's daughter and her husband. - The Panama Canal Scandal was the biggest corruption scandal and political crisis of the Third Republic, causing the collapse of three successive governments. In a bid to safe the ill-fated and underfunded project that had started construction works in Panama in 1881, Lesseps and his partners sold shares of their company to small investors from 1885 and a last stock issue in 1888, when the bankruptcy of the company was already immanent, was only possible due to the corruption of important politicians. Although the company was effectively bankrupt by 1889 and all works came to a halt, France delayed its liquidation until 1892. Apart from the political earthquake, the scandal led to a large corruption trial against Ferdinand de Lesseps, his son Charles, other managers of the company, and Marius Fontane himself. Another prominent defendant was the engineering contractor Gustave Eiffel who was initially convicted but doesn't seem to have been involved in the corruption scheme and was acquitted in second trial. Ferdinand de Lesseps's jail sentence was later overturned based on a formal defect, while his son served one year. Marius Fontane was ultimately sentenced to two years and a fine. - Well preserved.

Folio. ¾ pp. on bifolium. In pencil. Notes about the location of memorabilia from the age of Grumbach and Münzer. Written on a bifolium of slightly yellowed draft paper. Fontane's diaries and letters provide no other hint that Fontane took an interest in Wilhelm von Grumbach and his arguments with the Bishop of Würzburg, Emperor Ferdinand I, and the Elector of Saxony. Grumbach's legal battles, a history-based subject in the vein of Michael Kohlhaas, was likely to atttract a writer such as Fontane.

A fair copy manuscript, written in brown ink, formerly owned by the poet's son Friedrich and presented by him as a memento possibly to the publisher Friedrich Cohn in 1904 "Und es klagen ihre Tränen: | Weit der Himmel, tief die See, | Doch noch weiter geht mein Sehnen, | Und noch tiefer ist mein Weh […]" (from "Das Fischermädchen"). - This exquisitely written leaf was presented by Fontane's youngest son Friedrich (1864-1941) in 1904 apparently to Theodor Friedrich Cohn (1864-1936), a fellow partner in the Berlin publishing house of F. Fontane & Co. Although the date of the present manuscript is uncertain, all three of the present poems were originally written in the 1840s ("Guter Rat": 1849; "Das Fischermädchen": by 1844; "Der erste Schnee": 1841) and published in 1851. The present text of "Das Fischermädchen" and "Der erste Schnee" differs in places from the complete edition: see Theodor Fontane: Sämtliche Werke XX, pp. 7, 15-16).

Verso Sammlervermerk in roter Tinte: "Th. Fontane / Dichter u. Schriftsteller / 24. Aug. 1880 erh.".

Présence centrale de Barbarella à la 2e case, dans son look iconique de combinaison moulante. Encrage dense et parfaitement lisible, papier légèrement gondolé par endroits (lié au grand format et à l'encrage), quelques traces ou frottements marginaux sans impact sur l'image.

Ensemble de 10 documents notariés signés.
30 pages de format divers mais le plus souvent 29,5 × 19,5. Beaune, 1851-1854. Huit signatures autographes de l’Homme noir. Cet ensemble comprend trois actes notariés signés de la main de Xavier Forneret. Le premier, en date du 22 juillet 1851, concerne la vente de terrains, dont Forneret est propriétaire, à la commune de Demigny par l’intermédiaire du maire. Les portions de terrain seront employées alors au redressement et élargissement du Chemin de Gde Communication n°4 de Chagny à St. Loup-de-la Salle… Les deux autres sont des reçus signés par Xavier Forneret adressés à son notaire Maître Faivre. Les sept autres actes sont les écritures des dépenses et recettes faites pour Forneret par Maître Faivre, notaire à Demigny. Ces documents à marges réglées à l’encre et à la plume portent 8 fois la signature de Xavier Forneret et souvent sont précédées de mentions familières comme J ’ai lu et j ’approuve ou J ’ai examiné et j ’approuve sauf erreur ou omission. Rien donc d’extravagant quoique ? Provenance : Francis Dumont. On joint une copie faite de sa main de l’acte de naissance et de l’acte de décès de Forneret ainsi que le croquis de son arbre généalogique. De bien précieux documents, qui mériteraient d’être enluminés par Pierre Alechinsky !
