‎HAVET (Mireille, de Soyecourt).‎

‎Arlequin. Image de Printemps. Récit d’Adieux. Dialogue. Narcisse (épopée). 5 poèmes tapuscrits. 1919-1921.‎

‎44 feuillets, format in-4.

Vgl. Kosch II, 865f., Giebisch-G. 143, Öst. Lex. ‎Hawking, Stephen / Rocek, Martin (eds.).‎

‎Superspace and Supergravity: Proceedings of the Nuffield Workshop, Cambridge June 16-July 12, 1980. Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 1981.‎

‎8vo (226 x 152 mm). Publisher's maroon cloth, lettered in silver on spine, original pictorial dustjacket. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the title page in Hawking's own hand. This is a collection of densely mathematical papers given at a workshop on supergravity organized by Hawking. The dustjacket reproduces a blackboard covered with doodles by Martin Rocek and other attendees at the Nuffield Workshop, including a caricature of Hawking himself: the blackboard itself remained in Hawking's office in Cambridge until his death. A fine copy of the first edition. - Provenance: authorial inscription on title "Love from Stephen x x x"; Judy Fella (Hawking's first secretary and later PA and nursing co-ordinator: Fella typed up some of the manuscript for the work, and is depicted, as "one of the Fella's", in the cover artwork).‎

‎Hawking, Stephen, theoretical physicist (1942-2018).‎

‎Typed letter signed ("Stephen") to Charles W. Misner. Cambridge, 10. XI. 1970.‎

‎4to. (197:244 mm). 1 page. On headed "air letter" paper. One of Hawking’s students, Gary Gibbons, is to attend the meeting of the American Physical Society in New Orleans from 23-25 November, "where he will report on the British work on the design and construction of gravitational wave detectors. We think that, without the use of liquid helium, we can improve the sensitivity by a factor of 100. The first of these detectors should be operating before the end of the year, and the second one at Reading should follow soon after". Hawking hopes that Gary might stay on after the New Orleans meeting to attend the relativistic astrophysics conference in Austin, with a visit to the University of Maryland in between, and asks for Misner’s help in organising this visit: [Joseph] Weber will be too busy to show Gibbons around, but Hawking notes that Gary should really see Misner and [Dieter] Brill: "he is primarily a theoretician and is interested in the problem of how much gravitational radiation would be emitted by a collapsing object". Hawking also announces the birth of a little girl, "Catherine Lucy, though we will probably call her Lucy", born a little plumper than Robert, and very well behaved. - In 2016, over 45 years after Stephen Hawking’s hopeful mention in the present letter of the gravitational wave detectors being built in England - and one hundred years after Albert Einstein first predicted the existence of gravitational waves - scientists would finally have proof of these elusive ripples in space-time: the unmistakeable "ringing" as two black holes collides was heard at the Advanced Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) on 11 February 2016. When asked for comment, Hawking said that the discovery would "revolutionise" astronomy, noting also that it had proved his calculations of 1970 to be correct: "The observed properties of this system are consistent with predictions about black holes that I made in 1970 here in Cambridge". Hawking and his student Gary Gibbons would go on to collaborate in their research, lending their names to the "Gibbons-Hawking effect", "Gibbons-Hawking space", and the "Gibbons-Hawking ansatz". - Provenance: Charles W. Misner.‎

‎4to. (203:254 mm). 1 page. On headed notepaper. Hawking encloses an improved version of a paper co-authored with George Ellis (the work, not present here, was ‘The Cosmic Black-Body Radiation and the Existence of Singularities in Our Universe’, The Astrophysical Journal, Vol. 152 (April 1968), p. 25], noting that the ‘calculations of the convergence condition have been redrawn’. Hawking enjoyed his visit to Maryland, which prompted some ideas about Misner incompleteness that he intends to put into a paper when he has time. He continues: ‘I heard Stan Deser outline his proof that mass is positive definite. He claims that a function whose only critical value is zero and which has a local minimum there is necessarily positive elsewhere. It seems to me that there are counter examples to this in finite dimensions – not to speak of the infinite dimensions case’. A reminder about payment for his last week at Maryland and travel expenses ends the letter, Hawking professing himself embarrassed, but mentioning it in case the cheque might be missing in the post. - Stephen Hawking first met the American physicist Charles W. Misner during the latter’s 1966-67 visit to Cambridge at the invitation of Hawking’s postgraduate supervisor Dennis Sciama; the two became close, and Hawking visited Misner at his own institution, the University of Maryland, at the end of 1967. Hawking’s work on singularity theorems, which he first published in his 1965 doctoral thesis, overlapped with the research Misner was undertaking on geodesical incompleteness, a notion at the centre of the concepts Hawking was developing with Roger Penrose (the ‘Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems’). Here, Hawking seemingly refers to a proof that another of their colleagues in the field, Stanley Deser, would publish the following year in the Physical Review Letters, in a paper entitled ‘Positive-Definiteness of Gravitational Field Energy’. - Provenance: Charles W. Misner.‎

‎Hayashi Shihei‎

‎Rare Japanese Manuscript, One of the Earliest Desciptions of Korea. [Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu.]‎

‎Exceedingly rare and historically significant manuscript complete with manuscript drawings, made circa 1792, transcribing the banned controversial work by Hayashi Shihei which attributed coveted geographical regions to non-Japanese sovereigns, and which led the author to house arrest and his works destroyed by the Shogun. This work centers largely around the indigenous Ainu people and the people living in the Joseon Dynasty (Korea), thus being a very early account of Korea. All text is in Japanese. Author-published. 89 pages in manuscript including title page and end leaf. Indication of once being string-stitched at spine, opening from left to right. Leafs measure approximately 19 x 26 cm. SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF WORM BURROWING, some leaves lightly fused together as a result, MAPS NOT PRESENT, nonetheless a valuable historic addition for any library, being an exceedingly scarce surviving manuscript of the famous "Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu" by Hayashi Shihei. One of the earliest attempts to define Japan's outer boundaries, and distinguish it from the neighboring nations, the book deals with Joseon Dynasty (Korea) and the Kingdom of Ryukyu (Okinawa), and Ezo (Hokkaido) and the Ogasawara Islands (Bonin Islands). The content of this work is as controversial today as it was when it was released by the author 235 years ago. A statue of Hayashi Shihei stands in his honour, however, in Kotodai Park, Sendai. This work was emphatically criticized, immediately banned, and destroyed by the shogunate, all but a very scant few copies, that is, which were kept in hiding by scholars who took it upon themselves to secretly transcribe the important writings, with the original in hand. This is one of those surviving secret manuscripts, which were so very few in number and are exceedingly scarce. Hayashi Shihei (1738-1793) was a Japanese military scholar, political theorist, military strategist, writer, and a retainer of the Sendai Domain. He was a samurai of the Sendai clan issued in 1785 (Tenmei 5). His name is sometimes transliterated, according to the Sino-Japanese reading, as Rin Shihei’'. Hayashi is known as one of the "Three Excelling Men of the Kansei Period" (Kansei no san-kijin). Circa 1785 he wrote the highly controversial "Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu" [Illustrated General Survey of the Three Countries] which consisted of five maps and one text volume which detailed the customs of Korea, Ryukyu Kingdom, and Ezo country (Hokkaido), recounting an exploratory geographical survey of the regions that were then the frontiers of Japan, including Korea, Hokkaido, and the Ryukyu Islands, also providing descriptions of the inhabitants, including the Ainu. It contained, among other repugnant content in the eyes of the shogun, the attribution of Korean sovereignty over the Dokdo / Takeshima / Liancourt archipelago, and secondly, Chinese sovereignty over the Senkaku Islands [Diaoyu Islands] instead of recognizing it as part of the Ryukyu Kingdom (which had been a vassal state of the Satsuma Domain of Japan with 'de jure' status since 1609). Not a single publisher dared to put their name on the work, for fear of retribution, and thus, Hayashi released it independently in the years of 1787-1791, at his own expense. In 1792 [Kansei 4], the Tokugawa shogunate evaluated the content of this book, declared it a delusion, and banned it. The printings of Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu also became collateral victim of this banning. Almost all the original woodblock-printed versions of Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu were collected and destroyed. In 1787, he had published a second work of enlightened perspective and concern, titled ???? "Kaikoku Heidan" [Military Defense of a Maritime Nation]. This was a 16-volume work which brought to light the potential inadequacy in the military defense of Japan during the Edo period, specifically highlighting the island's vulnerability from the sea, as well as the need for Japan to adopt Western military science for improved defenses along Japanese frontiers, and the re-education of the samurai. Hayashi believed the nation's crisis was due to the repeated arrivals of foreign ships. He complained of a lack of organized drill exercises, and stressed the importance of choren, or teamwork drill, rather than mere individual martial training. He gave technical descriptions about shipbuilding, cannons and other military designs. He was especially critical of the Shogunate's sakoku national isolation policy. The work generated great interest, but it too, was banned in May 1792, on the grounds that national security matters were being discussed without official consent. This work having been published a few years prior, it was impossible to locate and destroy all printed copies, but the woodblocks were seized and destroyed with those of Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu. Simultaneously, as his two works were banned and destroyed, Hayashi was placed under house arrest. He died the following year, 28 July 1783, at the young age of 54. There were rumours of suicide and speculations of decapitation by authorities, but no evidence for either has surfaced. Ironically, shortly after Hayashi was punished, a Russian ship arrived in Nemuro, and the shogunate was forced to take measures to protect the coast, as had been suggested in Hayashi's "Kaikoku Heidan". In spite of the shogunate's best efforts, a scant few of 'Sangoku Tsuran Zusetsu' survived, thanks to a handful of audacious erudite men, and manuscript transcripts of his maps began to circulate covertly in learned Japanese circles. This book also went from Nagasaki to Holland and Germany through Katsuragawa Hoshu (1751-1809), who was a physician to the Shogun from 1777 and an Edan scholar in Edo; it was subsequently translated into European languages in Russia. In 1872, it was translated into French by the German Oriental scholar Heinrich Klaproth. Shugun Tokugawa Ienari, who suppressed and destroyed these works, and who exiled the author to his home, reigned from 1787-1837. In the first year of his reign there were rice riots in Edo and Osaka. Later tragedy, the Great Fire of Kyoto and the Tenpo famine took place. And in his strict fashion, in 1817 he ordered the expulsion of Titia Bergsma, the first European woman to visit Japan. The Dutch and Chinese were allowed to visit the country, but only for trade, and no women were permitted. Bergsma never saw her husband again. Credit to Pierre Joppen of Paulus Swaen Gallery, whose research on the subject is exhaustive and from whom some of the above content has been copied.‎

‎Haydn, Johann Michael, the "Salzburg Haydn", composer (1737-1806).‎

‎"Aus der Schöpfung von Herrn J. Haydn." Autogr. musical manuscript. Arnsdorf, 6 Oct. 1800.‎

‎Oblong folio. 5 pp. (4 ff., a full sheet folded twice). Four voices with lyrics. From part II of Joseph Haydn's oratorio: the trio "Zu dir, o Herr, blickt alles auf" ("Poco Adagio"), arranged by the composer's brother for his Arnsdorf male quartet. The caption as well as the postscript (with a statement of provenance) are added by the flautist and violist Georg Johann Schinn (1768-1833), a student and friend of Michael Haydn's: "Von Herrn M. Haydn für 4 Männerstimmen arrangirt zu Armsdorf am 6ten October 1800. Vom Herrn P. Werigand Rettensteiner Pfarrer in Armsdorf die Original Partitur davon erhalten als Hochzeitgeschenk im 2. Dezbr. 1802". - From 1763 onwards, Joseph Haydn's younger brother served for 40 years as leader of the orchestra of Sigismund von Schrattenbach, the Salzburg Archbishop. The Arnsdorfer Benedictine monk Rettensteiner was a close friend who prepared German lyrics, copies, and adaptations for the male choir. For Michael Haydn he also translated numerous pieces of Latin liturgical music into German and collected material on Haydn's life and works. Much of this was used for the earliest biography of Michael Haydn, published by Schinn in 1808 (in collaboration with F. J. Otter). - Traces of an old vertical fold. Untrimmed, the final two leaves remaining uncut.‎

‎Haydn, Joseph, composer (1732-1809).‎

‎Autograph letter signed ("Joseph Haydn mppria"). Vienna, 17 Oct. 1804.‎

‎4to. ½ p. Framed and glazed. In Italian, to George Thomson in Edinburgh, a friend of Robert Burns and publisher of Haydn's song adaptations, inquiring about London performances of his "Creation" and announcing that he intends to write, before his death, another two or at least one dozen works specially for Thomson: "Stimatissimo Signor mio. With Thomson's autogr. note of contents on the reverse: "Dr. Haydn. With 13 more Airs to which he composed Symph.s and Accomp.ts and Enquiring whether the Creation had been perf.d in London for the benefit of the poor - and that he will yet do some more airs for me, and only for me!" - Traces of folds; slight tear at horizontal centerfold (touching text), otherwise immaculate. Provenance: in the collection of Emilie Schaup in 1931; later in a Vienna private collection. First published in German translation by Botstiber, Der Merker 1/19, 777; Italian text first printed by Leo Grünstein in: Das Alt-Wiener Antlitz (Vienna 1931) I, 138 (but recipient erroneously identified as Bridi). ‎Haydn, Joseph, composer (1732-1809).‎

‎Autograph musical manuscript. Fragment of the insertion aria ("Dice benissimo") for Antonio Salieri’s opera "La scuola de' gelosi", HXXIVb:5. No place, [1780].‎

‎Two pages (207:300 mm). 14 bars on one six-stave system (bars 51-64 of the published edition) for voice, bass, two horns and strings, the text for the aria "Sono le femmine si maliziose [...] nessun per certo le troverà". A fragment of Haydn's "Dice Benissimo". Haydn composed two insertion arias for Antonio Salieri’s dramma giocoso of 1778, "La scuola de' gelosi": one is lost to us, while the present manuscript is a fragment of the aria created for the bass voice of the manservant Lumaca. One of Haydn's many responsibilities as Kapellmeister of the Esterházy family - by 1780 under Nikolaus I - was as director of the opera company, his patron's newest passion as of the mid-1770s. Esterháza Palace was transformed, at the behest of Prince Nikolaus, into an important fixture on the opera calendar, with its theatre routinely hosting multiple productions each year. Not only would Haydn direct and produce the performances, but he would compose his own works, as well as adapting those of other composers - usually choosing dramma giocoso - to suit the forces at his disposal. This often meant composing insertion arias - such as the present work - to suit the voice of a particular singer: around twenty such arias survive, dating from 1777 to 1789, although only a handful are written for bass or tenor. - Remnants of tape at upper, left-hand and bottom margins of recto. Provenance: Professor Theodor Dielitz (presentation and authentication inscription; Dielitz's substantial autograph collection was auctioned by Hartung in Berlin in January 1858), given to a Dr. Pribil as a duplicate, 1 January 1848. Last in the Metropolitan Opera Guild Collection. Not in Hoboken.‎

‎Haydn, Joseph.‎

‎Dr Haydn's VI Original Canzonettas, for the Voice with an Accompaniment for the Piano-Forte. London, printed for the author & sold by him at No. 1 Bury Street, St James's, at Messrs. Corri, Dussek & Co., [1794].‎

‎Folio (246 x 333 mm). 31, (1) pp. Engraved title-page and engraved music throughout, signed "Haydn mp" in ink in lower right comer of title-page. Bound with 31 other pieces, including another collection of six Haydn canzonettas. Paginated by a contemporary hand and bound in early 18th century half calf with gilt-lettered red morocco label "K. M. M. Saunders / Songs / Vol. II" to upper board. Manuscript index at rear. Edges sprinkled red. First edition, signed by the composer with his characteristic paraph, as in all copies. This first set of "Canzonette" was issued by Haydn from his lodgings during his final visit to London in 1794. lt must have been a commercial success, for a fair number of copies survive, and remains one of the few generally obtainable examples of an original signature of one of the 18th century masters of Viennese classicism. Two examples have appeared at auction before: both at Stargardt in Berlin, in 2004 and 2006, commanding €3,600 and €4,400 respectively. In both cases it was only the separate signed title-page (with the beginning of "The Mermaid's Song" on the verso) that was sold, having been removed from the 32-page score. - The present example is clear and unfaded, having been "in situ" since its early life, part of a bound collection of 31 similar pieces and collections from an Irish source, including many scarce examples of Dublin-printed songs, including Hime's very rare 1706 Dublin edition of Haydn's second set of Canzonettas, but also Mozart (1), Handel (4), Thomas Philipps (6), and J. A. Stevenson (3), all published ca. 1794 to 1803. - Binding worn but sound with a few professional repairs to hinges and spine. Minor soiling and small stains throughout, but a very good copy. Provenance: Katherine M. M. Saunders, probably of Dublin (her label to upper cover and ink name at head of several of the scores). Hoboken IX (1991) 1525. Hirsch III, 799. RISM H 2656.‎
