Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). - Durch die Förderung Georg Hauptmanns und Otto Brahms erreichten Hirschfelds Schriften um die Jahrhundertwende beachtliche Auflagenstärken (vgl. NDB IX, 224). In den 1920ern konnte Hirschfeld jährlich meist mehrere Werke veröffentlichen, darunter die Romane "Lord Byron" (Wien 1926) und "Das Heiligenblut" (München 1928). Koslowsky 159.

To a theatre critic named Schneider at the conservative daily "Le Radical", thanking him for a positive review of Hirschmann's opéra comique "Les Hirondelles": "Vraiment, mon cher ami, vous avez été déjà aimable pour la critique des Hirondelles [...]". - "Les Hirondelles" had premiered on 20 February 1907 at the Théâtre de la Gaîté. An den Verleger August Hesse in Graz: "Die Aenderung Ihrer Firma giebt mir, verehrter Herr College, willkommenen Anlaß, Ihnen brieflich die Theilnahme an Ihrem Wirken auszusprechen, welche ich Ihnen am 9 October persönlich zu bestätigen hoffte. Ich brachte nur eine Nach im ‚Elephanten' zu […]; den Abstecher nach Gratz machte ich, um den Abend dort mit Ihnen mich auszutauschen; um so mehr beklagte ich's, Sie zu verfehlen […]". - Hirt gründete 1832 eine eigene Sortimentsbuchhandlung mit Verlag in Breslau. Er förderte die Wiederentdeckung der deutschen Renaissance und gab zahlreiche preiswerte Kunstpublikationen heraus.

[d. i. die "Norddeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung", bis 1918, dann bis 1945 "Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung"]. Wir haben uns aufrichtig gefreut darüber und gratulieren herzlichst zu dieser wohlverdienten Anerkennung. Bei uns ist Alles wohl und munter. Ich selbst wäre schon längst zu Dir gekommen, jedoch war's mir nicht möglich [...]". - Hermann Hirzel begann nach einer Apothekerlehre und einem Chemiestudium an der Kunstakademie in Berlin zu studieren und unternahm eine Studienreise nach Italien, um sich dort autodidaktisch im Zeichnen und Radieren weiterzubilden. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Berlin 1893 wandte er sich der Gebrauchsgraphik und Buchkunst zu und "schuf vorwiegend Vignetten, Exlibris und Entwürfe für Goldschmiedearbeiten - unter fast ausschließlicher Verwendung der Pflanze als Ornamentmotiv" (DBE). - Auf Briefpapier mit Monogrammvignette.

Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Dropping out of his pharmaceutical training to become a painter in the 1880s, Hirzel specialized in etching and created advertisements, sheet music covers, and bookplates featuring floral ornaments. His career was interrupted by a six-year period during which he worked in the cotton trade in Russia before returning to Berlin in 1910 to focus on commercial art. - Traces of postmarks. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

The Republican politician from New York served that state in Congress 1877-87 and as senator 1887-93. ANS 1p 5" X 7½" New York NY 1889 October 25. Addressed to Mrs. Barker. Very good. Faintly age toned. On letterhead of "Office of Morton Bliss & Co." Hiscock fulfills some unnamed request: "I acknowledge the honor of your request and comply with great pleasure." Boldly penned in brown ink. Quite strange that the seated U.S. Senator would be writing on letterhead of this banking firm founded by the man who in 1887 Hiscock defeated in the caucus for the New York senate seat -- former representative and ambassador and then- current vice president Levi P. Morton. Odd that -- and the significance if any is unclear. unknown

Signed calling card heavy stock 3½" X 1 3/4" n.p. Washington DC n.y. 1904 lightly pencilled in another hand. Very good. Lightly age toned; minor mounting traces on verso. "Autograph of" and "Secretary of the Interior" handsomely printed in italics at upper left and lower right respectively of this card with Hitchcock's bold signature in brown ink in the space between. 340 pencil drawings, drawn by Alfred Hitchcock, one drawing highlighted in blue, each sheet with three boxes (or cells) with 3 pencil sketches, 46 cells are left blank and 22 drawings were crossed out. Numbering in the left-hand margin in pencil and red crayon (1-152, 240-293, plus 8 leaves numbered in Roman numerals at the end for the final scenes: pursuit in the theatre; decapitation by the theatre's security curtain and final scene), autograph annotations, directions and revisions throughout, one or two "camera angle" diagrams sketched out on left-hand pages. In all 130 loose sheets (208 x 262 mm), in pencil, mostly only recto, but three leaves are drawn also on verso. Sketch of a profile behind scenes 103 and 104; sketch of a stage setting behind scenes 98 A, 98 B and 99. Original black cloth folder-binder, blindstamped with paper label on the front cover and inscription "J. Martin" in faded red ink and "Stage Fright / R. Todd / M. Dietrich / M. Wilding" in blue ink. Preserved in a fitted case. Extraordinary autograph pre-production storyboard for Hitchcock's 1950 film "Stage Fright", comprising preparatory sketches for some three quarters of the film, including the infamous "false flashback" initial sequence, the rest of the first half of the film, the garden party scene and the finale. A rare collection of sketches and comments detailing how the legendary director crafted his scenes. - "Stage Fright" is a 1950 British noir thriller directed and produced by Alfred Hitchcock and starring Jane Wyman, Marlene Dietrich, Michael Wilding, and Richard Todd. The film was shot in London and Elstree in 1949, on a brief sojourn from California where Hitchcock had been working since 1940, and in some ways it was a return to the style (and humour) of his earlier British films. The crime thriller, centered on a killer who dupes a woman friend into helping him try to escape police after he murdered his actress lover's husband, was much criticised on release for the extraordinary "unreliable flashback" or "false flashback" scene, which Hitchcock famously considered his second greatest career mistake (after the death of the little boy in "The Secret Agent"). Posterity has been rather kinder: the device has influenced later generations of filmmakers more interested in artifice than truth, and the film as a whole has seen a partial critical reassessment in recent years. - Hitchcock had trained as a draughtsman and worked in advertising before turning to film, and his use of extensive storyboards, down to the finest detail of production, is well known. One of the myths to have built up around his career maintains that, after planning and storyboarding his films so thoroughly, once on set Hitchcock never so much as peeked through the camera viewfinder, bearing each scene from start to finish precisely in his head. - The sketches for "Stage Fright" include very precise directions for the actors and for camera angles which would have left the crew with little room for imagination ("pan up from stain", "CU" (close-up), "Dolly in to a dolly", "Back to Eve. Pan then out until the couple are in waist-shot going through the door"). Some of the most memorable shots of the film were clearly planned in advance and can be seen here: the car driving up to the camera at the beginning, the first shot of Alistair Sim framed in a lead window, the blood-stained dress shots, the blurring as Doris Tinsdale tries on her glasses, the umbrellas at the garden party and the finale with the stage curtain. But at the same time there are significant differences from the finished film, and this storyboard demonstrates that sequences and shots were dropped, added or amended during production. - The production files for all the other post-1940 films are in the Hitchcock Archives at the Margaret Herrick Library, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Beverley Hills. - In excellent condition throughout notwithstanding one or two dampstains; the last few leaves a little creased and frayed at edges. Provenance: 1) Jack Martin (1899-1969), first assistant director on "Stage Fright" (his credits also include assistant director on "Moby Dick" and production manager on "This Happy Breed"); 2) Hugh Harlow (b. 1939), assistant director and production manager on many films. - Includes a signed portrait photograph of Hitchcock at work on the storyboard drawings of his first American film, "Rebecca", in mid-1939, with Daphne du Maurier's novel opened before him and strewn with the cards on which the director would set out in sketched illustrations every detail of the film as he envisaged it.

Bestätigt den Erhalt des dritten Bandes von "Goethes Briefwechsel mit einem Kinde". - Ferdinand Hitzig war Professor für alttestamentliche Theologie an der damals neu gegründeten Universität Zürich. 1841 kehrte er als Ordinarius nach Heidelberg zurück und wurde 1872 zum Geheimen Kirchenrat ernannt. "In seinen wissenschaftlichen Arbeiten zum Alten Testament, vor allem zahlreichen Kommentaren, standen Textkritik und Einzelexegese im Vordergrund. 1838 eröffnete er ein Kurzgefaßtes exegetisches Handbuch zum Alten Testament als erste historisch-kritische Kommentarreihe" (DBE).

Januar 1856 7 Uhr" lädt. - Unter der Leitung Karl Friedrich Schinkels am Bau der neuen Berliner Sternwarte tätig und nach zweijährigem Aufenthalt in Paris ließ sich Hitzig 1837 als selbständiger Architekt in seiner Heimatstadt nieder. Bekannt wurde er durch seinen ersten öffentlichen Bau, die Börse in der Burgstraße (1859-64), sowie durch die 1869-76 von ihm errichtete Deutsche Reichsbank; 1850/51 gehörte er zu den Begründern der "Zeitschrift für Bauwesen", wurde Mitglied der Preußischen Akademie der Künste und amtierte von 1875 bis 1881 als deren Präsident. - Johann Heinrich Schramm war bekannt für seine tls. in Bleistift, teils in Aquarell ausgeführten Portraits von berühmten Zeitgenossen, darunter Alexander von Humboldt, Jakob Grimm, Friedrich Rückert, Heinrich Laube, Ludwig Tieck und Clemens Wenzel Fürst Metternich. - Beiliegend ein zeitgenöss. Sammlungsumschlag mit irrtümlicher Identifikation als "Ferdinand Hitzig".

Wohl an den Mediziner Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot (1807-1884). - Hjort wirkte lange Jahre in unterschiedlichen Funktionen als Militärarzt; von 1841-71 als Oberarzt und klinischer Lehrer in der Abteilung für Hautkrankheiten des Reichshospitals tätig, verfaßte er zahlreiche Arbeiten über Syphilis, Aussatz und Hautkrankheiten. - Rudolf Rt. von Vivenot gründete 1848 den "Konstitutionell-monarchistischen Verein"; als sich die angestrebte Gründung einer patriotischen Partei nicht verwirklichen ließ, zog er sich jedoch aus der aktiven Politik zurück. Seit 1868 Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina, wurde er 1872 Vorsitzender des Komitees zur Gründung des Sophienspitals in Wien; daneben war Vivenot Direktor des Unterstützungsvereins für Witwen und Waisen des medizinischen Doktor-Collegiums. - Mit unbedeutenden Montagespuren am linken Blattrand.

[...]". - After being twice rejected by the Vienna Academy, Hlavácek was finally admitted in 1859 and specialized in landscapes. His most characteristic works, including monumental paintings created from 1874 to 1884, such as a panorama of Vienna, show a poetic understanding of nature. - Small ink spots near upper margin; faint creases near lower corners. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Der erfolgreiche Agronom, Schriftsteller und Politiker Franz Xaver von Hlubek ist heute vor allem für seine Rolle in der Kontroverse um die aufkommende Mineraltheorie zur Erklärung der Fruchtbarkeit von Böden bekannt. Hlubek war ein Anhänger der älteren Humustheorie, die die Bedeutung von Stickstoff und Kohlendioxid im Boden für das Pflanzenwachstum betonte. Justus Liebig war als Vordenker der Agrochemie einer der prominentesten Verfechter der Mineraltheorie, die er 1840 in einer Publikation darlegte. Letztlich setzte sich Liebigs Theorie durch und eröffnete den Weg zur industriellen Düngerproduktion.

Manuscript Calendar of Prisoners Tried and Charged - East Kent Sessions Prision Calendar
Canterbury, October 1880. Calendar of Prisoners tried, charged, and imprisoned at Her Majesty's Prison at Canterbury. Original court document, with manuscript annotations by the clerk, listing nine convicts and three persons on bail. Folio. 3 pages, printed at the Kentish Observer Steam Printing Office in Canterbury. Double leaf measuring approximately 27 x 42 cm. Chips to margins, otherwise in very good condition. "Calendar of Prisoners for Trial at the General Quarter Sessions of the Peace, to be holden at St. Augustine's, near Canterbury, on Tuesday, the 19th day of October, 1880." Felonies herein recorded consisted mainly of thievery and fraud having taken place in East Kent, although two deal with the crime of "unlawfully wounding" a person. Presented in a succinct chart, the location and date of each crime, the date of warrant and arrest, and specific charges are outlined. The victims are named, as is each felon and his occupation. Items stolen include a handkerchief, watches, coats, a shovel, cash currency, wool, 20 feet of a leather band, and in one instance a sail and a yard for navigation, which certainly draws attention to the drastically different crimes occupying the early court system. As well as the criminals, the title page names the High Ssheriff of Kent, the under-sheriff, the clerk of the peace, and the Chairman of the East Kent Division - Right Honourable Lord Brabourne. [Edward Hugessen Knatchbull-Hugessen, 1st Baron Brabourne, PC, a British Liberal politician who served as Under-Secretary of State for the Home Department under Lord Russell in 1866, and under William Ewart Gladstone from 1868 to 1871. He was also Under-Secretary of State for the Colonies under Gladstone from 1871 to 1874. He was admitted to the Privy Council in 1873 and raised to the peerage as Baron Brabourne, of Brabourne in the County of Kent, in 1880.] [The High Sheriff of Kent was at the time Sir David Salomons, 1st Baronet, a leading figure in the 19th century struggle for Jewish emancipation in the United Kingdom, the first Jewish Sheriff of the City of London and Lord Mayor of London. Originating as a county gaol in 1808, Her Majesty's (HM) Prison Canterbury, in Kent, served as a Home Office archive during the First World War, as a Naval Detention Centre during the Second World War, and reopened in 1946 as a local prison to serve the courts of Kent. The prison formally closed on 31 March 2013, and was bought by Canterbury Christ Church University in April 2014.

Benjamin 1859-1940 the pioneering autograph dealer whose firm was run by daughter Mary Benjamin until her death not too many years ago. Very good. "Will you send me at Washington the Burke autograph contained in your last Bulletin #1 sent me this morning price $7.50." Strong bold signature with words "at Washington" in Hoar's hand as well. There are a number of historical Burkes this could have been referring to but it is likely that this American politician would have taken an interest in the British statesman. In any case one salivates at the thought! unknown

This American naval commander awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor in 1933 gained fame in 1898 when he sunk the "Merrimac" during a naval maneuver in a channel at Santiago Cuba; from 1907 to 1915 he served as a representative from Alabama. Exceptionally bold and attractive "Compliments of / Richmond Pearson Hobson / with apologies for delay -- / Hong Kong April 21 1900" in brown ink heavy stock 3½" X 2½" card. Very good. Mild age toning; faint mounting traces at a couple corners. A choice example signed near the height of his fame. With original envelope cancelled in the Philippines on 22 May 1900. unknown

Er gehörte jahrzehntelang dem Direktionsrat der mit der Handelsbank vereinigten Unionsbank an, war 1876-78 dessen Vizepräsident und 1879-1909 Präsident des Schiedsgerichts der Warenbranche an der Wiener Börse sowie seit 1877 Mitglied der niederösterreichischen Handels- und Gewerbekammer.
