Die Sentenz bei Veröffentlichung in Druckschrift wiedergegeben. - Hans Lohmeyer hatte von 1919 bis 1933 das Amt des Oberbürgermeisters von Königsberg inne, das nach dem Versailler Vertrag geographisch durch den "Polnischen Korridor" vom restlichen Deutschen Reich getrennt war. Die verschiedenen Ansichten sind von Herrn Kleinmichel übertragen worden; zu meinem Bedauern ist er dabei zusehr von der Skizze abgewichen obgleich er der Zeichnung dafür manches andere Verzügliche gegeben hat. Die ‚Hemdengeschichte' wird genau nach Ihrer Darstellung erscheinen. Die Illustration hat C. v. Grimm übernommen - Es ist selbstverständlich, dass genau die von Ihnen gegebenen Namen beibehalten werden […] In Bezug auf die ‚kleine Geschichte' erbitte ich mir die Erläuterung eines mildernden Zusatzes im Texte. Was die heraldische Humoreske betrifft, so möchte ich Sie vorläufig bitten von der Ausführung noch Abstand zu nehmen. Ich werde mir gestatten bei meiner nächsten Anwesenheit in Berlin in persönlicher Unterredung über diese Angelegenheit mich mit Ihnen zu verständigen […]". - Ursprünglich Apotheker in Elbing, war Lohmeyer seit 1868 an der Schriftleitung des Berliner "Kladderadatsch" beteiligt, in dem er mit patriotischen Gedichten hervortrat. Seine 1872 gegründete Zeitschrift "Die deutsche Jugend" galt dem preuß. Unterrichtsministerium als "Muster guter Jugendliteratur".

This Massachusetts governor 1880-83 and congressman 1883-89 is best known as President McKinley's Secretary of the Navy 1897-1902 in which capacity he modernized that department. Bold "Truly Yours / John D Long / Sec of the Navy / Aug 16 1898" in his sloppy hand penned on the blank verso of his heavy stock 3�" X 1�" printed "The Secretary of the Navy" calling card. Very good. Lightly age toned. Accompanied by a superb steel-engraved portrait heavy stock 5�" X 8" n.p. n.y. Very good. Lightly age toned. "Engd. by A.H. Ritchie" noted in fine print below this image which is likely a book illustration or frontispiece of late 19th century vintage. The letter with New Year's wishes was probably addressed to a British friend, as Longfellow mentions his astonishment that Thomas De Quincey (1785-1859) is little published in England: "A new interesting book, just published here in Boston, but not yet published in England except in old magazines. How is it that a writer of so much power as De Quincey is so much neglected in his own country?". - From 1851 Ticknor, Reed and Fields of Boston published the collected works of Thomas De Quincey, starting with his most famous work, "Confessions of an English Opium-Eater". Longfellow also mentions Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Charles Lloyd, friends of De Quincey's, as well as a mutual friend or acquaintance who came to Boston "and has brought out six or eight extremely interesting volumes". - With a collector's note in pencil. Traces of folds. A minor tear to the fold and some browning.
