Right now, your essay to me seems to be based on solely warm feelings instead of clear concepts. That may also derive from the poetic form (of the essay). Having said that, I would be very pleased if you continued to dedicate yourself with the same enthusiasm to our good cause of socialism […]". - In fine condition, with a fragile central mailing fold, mild soiling, and a few pencil notations. Sammlung von mehr als 500 Original-Photographien eines Chefstewards auf verschiedenen Luxuslinern auf den Transatlantiklinien der United States Lines. Verschiedene Orte bzw. Schiffe, 1930er bis 1960er Jahre.
6 Lederalben (qu.-folio) und lose Photographien (verschiedene Formate). Private Photosammlung des Schiffsstewards Hermann Muller, der zwischen den 1930er und 1960er Jahren - der Hochzeit der Luxusschiffahrt - auf den Passagierdampfern der Reederei United States Lines im Bordservice gearbeitet hatte und bis zum Chefsteward aufgestiegen war. - Die aus einer Postschiffahrtsgesellschaft hervorgegangene amerikanische Reederei United States Lines betrieb von 1929 bis 1969 eine Transatlantiklinie (New York-Bremerhaven und New York-London) für Luxus-Passagierdampfer, die tlw. mit ehemals deutschen, als Reparationszahlungen übernommenen Passagierschiffen (America, George Washington), später mit eigens für die Reederei gebauten Dampfern befahren wurde. Der berühmteste Dampfer des Unternehmens war die United States, das Flaggschiff der Reederei, die auf ihrer Jungfernfahrt 1952 (unter Kapitan H. Manning) das "Blaue Band" errungen hatte. Sie hält bis heute den Rekord für die schnellste Atlantikquerung eines Passagierschiffes in östlicher Richtung. - Hermann Muller fuhr unter anderem auf den Schiffen America, President Roosevelt, Leviathan, Manhattan, Washington und eben auch der United States. Als Chefsteward hatte er die Verantwortung für Küche, Vorratshaltung und Reinigung des Schiffs. Mullers große Umsicht und Einsatzbereitschaft für das persönliche Wohl der teils prominenten Passagiere sowie ein offensichtlich sympathisches Wesen machten ihn zum ersten Ansprechpartner und beliebten Mitglied der Bordcrew, wie zahlreiche herzliche und persönliche Widmungen auf den Photographien wie "Wishing you as always a Happy sailing thru life" bezeugen. Die Photographien (Formate zwischen 7 und 12 und 20 und 26 cm) stammen überwiegend von den Bordphotographen der Linie oder von privat und zeigen neben den Passagieren auch die Crew und das Küchenpersonal, Banketts, Silvester- und Geburtstagsfeiern, Bordhochzeiten, Seebestattung, seltene Details oder auch Gesamtaufnahmen der Passagierdampfer; daneben finden sich auch Familienphotos aus dem Privatleben von H. Muller. - Unter den Passagieren, die sich mit Photo und einigen Grußworten in der Sammlung verewigten, befinden sich viele berühmte Namen der funkelnden Welt des Films und des Jet Sets, des Sports und der Politik, darunter John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Charlton Heston, Cary Grant, Bob Hope, Horst Buchholz, Edward Duke of Windsor mit seiner Frau Wallis Simpson, Harold Lloyd, Walt Disney, Charles Boyer, Donald Campbell, die Boxer Walter Neusel, Bob Olin und Erich Seelig, Dean Jagger, Joan Crawford, Cornel Wilde, Jean Wallace, James Cagney, den Bürgermeister von London Cuthbert Ackroyd, Corinne Calvet, Herbert Marshall, Salvador Dali, Harry Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, Haile Selassie, Ludwig Erhard, Felix Graf von Luckner, Saud ibn Abd al-Aziz Al Saud u. v. m. - Photographien teilweise gelöst, einzelne mit Randeinrissen, die Alben gering berieben. Insgesamt eine interessante und umfangreiche Sammlung von sehr guter Erhaltung.

Oblong 8vo (postcard). ½ page. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Known for his genre paintings, marines, landscapes, portraits and animal scenes, Luyten founded a private painting school, the "Institut des Beaux Arts Henry Luyten", in Brasschaat near Antwerp in 1900. From 1931 to 1944 he worked on one of his most famous paintings, "The Golden Canvas of Flanders", showing a fictional meeting of the hundred-odd people who in his opinion played a key role in Flemish history and the Flemish movement. - Traces of postmarks; small crease near lower left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Announcing to an unnamed recipient his marriage to the nurse and president of the French Red Cross, Inès de Bourgoing (1862-1953): "Je vous annonce mon très prochain marriage avec Madame Fortoul née de Bourgoing - Je me réjouis de penser que vous vous trouviez réciproquement charmants [...]". - Hubert Lyautey and Inès de Bourgoing married in Paris on 14 October 1909. Lyautey had been posted to command a subdivision south of Oran in 1903, rising to the rank of a divisional general in 1907. In 1910 Lyautey left Algeria for France and briefly commanded a corps at Rennes. He returned to North Africa as early as 1912 to participate in the relief of Fez, then under siege by insurgent Moroccans. Until his retirement in 1925, Lyautey served as Resident-General of French Morocco. - Inès de Bourgoing established several Red Cross nursing facilities in Morocco during her husband's term. After his death in 1934, de Bourgoing divided her time between France and Morocco, also supporting Moroccans in France and, during WWII, Moroccan troops serving in Europe. She was awarded the rank of Grand Officer of the Order of Ouissam Alaouite in recognition of her work in Morocco. - With very light foxing and traces of folds.

This bibliographical giant president of the American Library Association and the Bibliographical Society of America was a fixture at the New York Public Library serving as manager of the manuscript division chief reference librarian assistant director and finally director 1934-41; among his many books is "The History of the New York Public Library" 1923. Partly-printed DS 1p 5½" X 8½" New York NY 1940 June 24. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "New York Public Library" letterhead this form letter partly typed in acknowledges and thanks a book gift to the library -- in this case Gates' privately published booklet "Amberglow of Abraham Lincoln and Ann Rutledge." Lydenberg's miniscule signature could easily be mistaken for printed but is actually authentic and original. unknown

The third editor of the "New York Tribune" the first being Horace Greeley the second Whitelaw Reid joined that venerable publication in 1876 and was named editor-in-chief in 1905 serving until 1913. On a clipped 5 3/4" X 2" slip the editor boldly pens in black fountain pen: "With best wishes for your / prosperity and happiness / I am / Very sincerely Yours / Hart Lyman." Near fine. Two pinholes at upper left not affecting text. Also present is the similarly-sized masthead from the same letterhead sheet the inscription was clipped bearing a printed "New York Tribune" and dated by Lyman 9 January 1910. unknown
