An den befreundeten Kaufmann, Bankier und württembergischen Konsul in Rom Karl von Kolb, dem er ausführlich von einer Frau berichtet, für die er sich einst verwendet hat und die nunmehr, Jahre danach, für erneuten Aufruhr sorgt: "[...] So natürlich es ist, daß ein Mann sich für ein schwächeres[,] armes, unglückliches Weib interessirt, so findet man doch so selten Leute, die uneigennützig genug sind, aus reiner Humanität sich auf solche opera pia des Trostes u. der Beyhilfe einzulassen. - Ich selbst bin an diese Frau mehr durch Mitleid und durch die Theilnahme für Ihren entschiedenen Charakter, der schon damals durchleuchtete, als durch Verliebtseyn hingezogen worden, und da in jener Zeit, als ich Umgang mit ihr hatte, das Leben dieser armen Person, in der That dem des Hiob zu vergleichen war, so ward ich damals selber mit unglücklich, unthätig (was mir vielleicht zum Vorwurf gereicht) - aber ich wurde, bis ihr bestmöglich geholfen war, nur immer fester an sie gekettet. Als ich sie in Neapel in einer guten Condition unter Menschen wußte, als ich vollends auch den Knaben [...] untergebracht wußte, glaubte ich los u. ledig zu seyn - ja, ich hätte mir einen Vorwurf daraus gemacht, einem Verhältnis länger anzuhängen, das hemmend u. lähmend auf meine Thätigkeit einwirkte. Dazu kam, daß sie selbst nach längerer Trennung (Ich war in Rom, sie in Neapel) ein anderes Verhältnis anknüpfte, was ich ihr auch gar nicht weiter verdachte, da ich ihr niemals irgend ein Versprechen der Treue oder dergleichen abgefordert hatte, da ich ja weit entfernt war, dieses Verhältnis als ein bleibendes befestigen zu wollen. Als nun nach 6jährigem Schweigen, bey meiner letzten Anwesenheit in Rom, das gute Weib sich wieder vernehmen ließ, u. durch That u. Wort sich vor mir rein wusch von Undank, womit ich sie in meinem Herzen beschuldigen mußte; so hat mich das zwar sehr gerührt und moralisch erbaut - inzwischen hielt ich es nun auch damit für abgemacht, und verstehe ich eigentlich nicht, mein lieber alter Kolb, was Ihr für Gedanken habt, indem Ihr nochmals für die N. an mich appellirt; zumal in einem Augenblick, wo jene im Begriff steht, einem andern ihre Hand zu geben, mit dem sie seit 6 Jahren in Verbindung getreten, u. der ihrer eigenen Äußerung nach, ihrer nicht unwürdig ist [...]". - Mit kleinem Ausriß durch Siegelbruch (keine Textberührung).

[...]". - Working in the studio of the Neo-Baroque sculptor Reinhold Begas since 1888, Magnussen contributed to the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Nationaldenkmal. He became a freelance artist in 1893, focusing on portrait busts and figures, his sculpture group for the Berlin Siegesallee constituting one of his major works. - A few tiny ink spots. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Intriguing if frustratingly cryptic closing portion of an ALS -- as is a fragmentary ANS 1p irregular 5¼" X 1 3/4" tipped to slightly larger sheet n.p. n.y. "1855" penned minutely in another hand along right border. Very good. Bold and attractive the top two lines are partial -- whole reads: "ing it & robbing us / it will be a favor to the illegible / Yours truly Geo. F. Highly interesting correspondence with his friend, the Belgian librarian and writer André Bormans, touching upon various subjects, especially semiotics and the theory of art. In the earliest letter, Magritte invites Bormans for the Christmas holidays and announces that he will show him his latest unfinished paintings: "Particularly: La Joconde, L'Enfance d'Icare and La Colère des Dieux that you will, I believe, enjoy to get to know" (17 Nov. 1960). In closing, Magritte asks whether Bormans can obtain for him Upton Sinclair's 1931 novel "The Wet Parade", which deals with the social effects of alcoholism and prohibition, from the communal library. - Another letter, from 22 October 1963, contains profound semiotic reflections on the relationship between image and word and the effects of the "unification" of word and image. Magritte refers to his famous text-image combinations entitled "Les Mots et les Images" from the last issue of "Révolution Surréaliste" published in 1929, underlining that he now believes that it is more accurate to say that word and image are united rather than re-united: "Depuis, c'est 'unir' qui me semble juste. Réunir obligerait de croire que les choses après avoir été 'unies' ne le seraient plus, qu'elles auraient été désunies. En somme croire à quelque chose d'indifférent". He then gives specific examples from his work such as "La Cascade" and "L'Empire des Lumières", arguing that what the painting "presupposes is partly to be defined". The pictorial representation thus "challenges thinking to be able to think (unite)", which he calls a "contraction", in the case of "L'Empire des Lumières" that of "night and day". To underline the mutual exclusion whose terms are still interdependent, Magritte quotes the Belgian surrealist writer Marcel Lecomte: "The absence of a footstep materializes". Even more dear to him is Louis Scutenaire's statement: "When I exhale I commit a crime". Inspired by his friend's semantic dramatization of something as banal and automatic as exhalation, Magritte exclaims: "What I have painted 'suffices' - What he has written 'suffices' - But not painting and not saying anything also 'suffices'. Your 'The dream requires genius' suffices as 'expression' (expression in the sense of writing, the words not saying what they designate - like in La Cascade, the images not showing what they are)". Magritte closes with the announcement of the title for a painting contributed by Scutenaire: "For a new painting (trees-orange foliage) Scut found a beautiful title: 'The princes of autumn' (which is a beginning of a precious 'commentary')". This section is accompanied by a charming little sketch of the painting. - Just a week later Magritte sends a short letter in which he corrects statements from a previous missive not part of the collection. Magritte writes that he did not express himself well when he was discussing Pierre Étaix's 1962 romantic comedy "The Suitor" and tries to characterize the humor exemplified by this film, referring to a specific scene. He also mentions Charles Muselet's 1866 collection of biographies "Portraits après déces" and a magazine, probably of a Christian cult, that he has been handed in the streets. Finally, Magritte announces that he will send Bormans a photograph of his close friend, the publisher and fellow surrealist E. T. L. Mesens (1903-71). - The latest dated letter, from 18 July 1965, is rather short but includes a charming sketch of Magritte's painting "Le Pan de Nuit" ("The patch of night"), showing a disembodied patch of long red hair in a bowler hat from behind: "The painting on which I am currently working, awaiting its title". He also reports his recovery from an illness, announces two photographs of new paintings ("Le Char de la Vierge" and "Parmi les Bosquets légers"), and recommends Proust's "Contre Saint-Beuve". - Magritte's undated letter offers recommendations for changes to a text that Bormans has written for an exhibition catalogue: "A proposition: 'to enrich our humble means in making the world known' occasions me to ask for a small change that protects the reader from contenting himself with the belief that the 'means' are to be enriched, to be perfected and that knowledge is of secondary importance. This possible misunderstanding could perhaps be avoided in saying: 'to aid our humble knowledge of the world'. The advantage of this phrasing also allows to counter the glorification of the 'means' [...]". The explanation for his final suggestion makes Magritte's anti-positivist stance even more explicit, as he jokes: "or another modification that does not jeopardize 'the subjectivity' that is dear to the experts of 'objectivity'!". - Four of the five letters on stationery with printed letterhead. Well preserved.

8vo. 2 pp. on bifolium. The sketches: 42 x 58 mm and 35 x 51 mm in ballpoint. Charming letter in French, probably to his Athens-based art dealer Alexander Iolas, who had bought the painting "The Dress of Galatea" that is mentioned in the letter. After announcing his safe arrival in Nice together with his wife Georgette Berger and their dog Loulou and thanking the recipient for his hospitality, Magritte suggests the now-official title of the nude painting. He jokingly reasons that "archeologists will have something to 'reflect' upon and you will have, I believe, the same pleasure as I do to know how Galatea could dress". In the second part of the letter, Magritte makes two architectural suggestions with sketches for the building project of a mutual friend, Castellanos. The first idea is to have "somewhere in the facade a crooked window (the rest being perfectly straight)". Secondly, Magritte suggests to add an unreachable door to the facade while concealing the actual entrance on the side. - Although surrealist architecture abounds in Magritte's paintings, there is no record of any actual building projects. Facetiously though the letter is written, Magritte would certainly have enjoyed seeing his ideas realized. - The text in full: "Nous sommes bien 'rentrés' à Nice, Georgette, Loulou et moi, en gardant le délicieux plaisir de votre accueil et du milieu splendide où vous vivez. C'est mieux qu'un rêve, heureusement... Mais je vous écris pour vous remercier mais aussi pour vous demander d'ajouter un mot au titre 'Galatée': en renvoyant le tableau nonvie ainsi par nous, j'ai pensé que le titre pourrait être: 'La Robe de Galatée' - De cette manière, d'éventuels archéologues auront de quoi 'réflechir' et vous avez, je crois, le même plaisir que moi à savoir comment Galatée pouvait s'habiller. En repensant aux possibilités architecturales que l'architecte de Castellanos ne se fait pas faute de prodiguer avec un rare bonheur, j'aimerais - si cela 'va' - que vous lui en suggeriez une, (que si je faisais bâtir, je vourdrais voir réaliser). A personal and exquisite New Years' greeting, dated 1 January 1932, for Governor of Bengal Sir Francis Stanley Jackson, from the Maharajah Bahadur of Hathwa, signed in the original by the latter "Guru Mahadev Ashram Prasad Sahi". Single leaf one-off printed document on parchment, with illustrated border, recto framed with exquisite gilt ribbons sequined, embroidered, with tassels, verso backed with pink silk textile, measuring approximately 26,5 x 42 cm. Signature faint, document creased, otherwise in very good condition, nicely preserved, clean and bright, a singular and personal document from royalty of India. A singular document, elegantly crafted and signed by a Maharajah, commemorates the end of term for Sir Francis Stanley Jackson as British Governor of Bengal. Sir Francis Stanley Jackson GCSI GCIE KStJ (1870-1947) was a captain in the British Army and served in the Boer War, a Conservative Party MP, Governor of Bengal from 1927 to 1932, and an avid English cricketer. During Stanley's time at Harrow School his fag [personal servant] was fellow parliamentarian and future Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Only five weeks after this document was made, on 6 February 1932, Jackson narrowly escaped an attempted assassination by a female student named Bina Das as he was making a speech in the Convocation Hall of the University of Calcutta. Later in the same year (1932), Jackson he was awarded the KStJ (Order of Saint John) and was appointed GCSI (Most Exalted Order of the Star of India). As such, on this document his honour of chivalry is only Knight Grand Commander of the Order of the Indian Empire. He is also recognized with the title P.C., then being a Member of the Privy Council.

110 x 110 mm. 1 p. The Cairo-born Naguib Mahfouz is regarded as one of the first contemporary writers of Arabic literature to explore themes of existentialism. He was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Literature, the only Arab writer to have won the award. Shortly after winning the prize Mahfouz was quoted as saying, "The Arab world also won the Nobel Prize with me. I believe that international doors have opened, and that from now on, literate people will consider Arab literature also".

Request of a surgical operation by 'Said bin Mehmed' (Siroz Redif Taburu Efrâdindan) and Mahmud Sevket Pasha and Izzeddin's confirmations. Signed by Mahmud Shevket Pasha as "commander of Turkish countercoup of 1909 (Hareket Army)" and by Izzeddin [Çalislar] as "Erkân-i Harb Kolagasi (Batallion commander)". The Ottoman countercoup of 1909 (13 April 1909) was an attempt to dismantle the Second Constitutional Era of the Ottoman Empire and replace it with an autocracy under Sultan/Caliph Abdul Hamid II. Unfortunately for the advocates of representative parliamentary government, mutinous demonstrations by disenfranchised regimental officers broke out which led to the collapse of the Ottoman government. Characterized as a counterrevolution, chaos reigned briefly and several people were killed in the confusion. It was instigated by some parts of the Ottoman Army in a large part by a certain Cypriot Islamic extremist. Dervish Vahdeti reigned supreme in Istanbul for 11 days. The Countercoup was put down in the 31 March Incident, on 24 April 1909 by the Army of Action (Hareket Ordusu) which was the 11th Salonika Reserve Infantry Division of to the Third Army (Ottoman Empire) commanded by Mahmud Shevket Pasha. Extremely rare.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original autograph letter sealed by Mahmud Naci Balkis. 21x15 cm. In Ottoman script (Turkish with Arabic letters). 1 p. To his unnamed respectable friend. Congratulations to Abdussaid Bey, a kind appeal for a payment behalf of himself and sending the receipt to his mother, "Islahat Komisyonu" etc. Dated fî sene 1 Subat [February] [1]325 AH [= 1909 AD]. Mahmud Naci Bey was a Turkish politician, soldier, deputy of the Ottoman Parliament Assembly Tripoli (17 December 1908), founder of Besiktas Gymnastics Club (1903). Mahmut Naci Bey, who was one of the founders of the Ottoman Besiktas Terbiye-i Bedeniye School, also became a member of the Ottoman Deputy Council and served as the Deputy of Tripoli. He wrote a book titled "Trablusgarp - Hedefteki Ülke Libya'nin Tarihi" [i.e. "Tripoli - The History of the Destination Country Libya"], which also wrote the situation in Libya with his memories here. Mahmut Naci Bey, who was of Caucasian origin, was against the policy of Sultan Abdülhamid II. He joined Mustafa Kemal Pasha during his occupation years. He took part in the National Struggle in secret weapon shipments from Anatolia to Istanbul. The Independence Medal was awarded for his active role in the War of Independence.

Während des Ersten Weltkrieges wurde er mit dem Ehrenzeichen des Roten Kreuzes ausgezeichnet. Vgl. Planer, Jahrb. der Wr. Ges., 1929, zit. n. DBA II 847, 448. - Der Sohn des Schauspielers Carl Adolf Friese war als Bankbeamter tätig, bevor er sich als Autodidakt der Schauspielerei zuwandte. Nach seinem Debut in Krems/Donau stand er in Czernowitz, Troppau und Marienbad auf der Bühne, kam ans Josefstädter Theater nach Wien und erhielt im folgenden Jahr ein Engagement am Residenztheater in Hannover. In Hamburg gehörte er dem Ensemble des Carl-Schultze-Theaters an, befand sich 1886-90 auf einer großen Amerikatournee, wo er als Charakterkomiker großen Erfolg hatte, und kehrte nach Hannover zurück. Seit 1891 spielte Friese am Alberttheater und seit 1893 am Residenztheater in Dresden, wo er zuletzt auch als Regisseur wirkte.
