Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 18½" n.p. n.d. ca. World War One. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear and mild soiling. Labeled "They've Changed Their Tune" by McCutcheon along the lower margin this two-panel cartoon concerns the volatile German military situation. The upper panel labeled "Before the War" depicts a suited man labeled "German Socialists" at left presumably a politician addressing the legislature raising his arm and proclaiming "These war preparations must end!" Three military figures stand at right in the foreground clutching their fists and glaring angrily at the speaker. The leftmost of them labeled "Prussian Autocracy" grumbles "He's becoming a menace to us!" Next to him stands "Militarism" and "Hohenzollerns." The lower panel labeled "Now" shows the same "German Socialists" figure front and center foreground a scroll under his arm labeled "Peace Proposal to Russian Socialists" and a picket sign he clutches reading "This War Must End!" He stares angrily at the same three military figures at the right who now appear worried and apologetic holding their hats politely in their hands. "Prussian Autocracy" says to him "You are our hope" and Militarism" adds "--our salvation." At left stands a crowd of civilians labeled "German People" who reach out desperately and implore "We want peace!" Handsomely accomplished and typically provocative a fine example of McCutcheon's artistic prowess and delight in exposing hypocrisy. Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. unknown

Labeled "Cartoons of the Day" in cursive by McCutcheon on the lower margin followed by three subtitles this handsome three-panel piece contains three unrelated topics. The top panel titled "No time to waste" celebrates aviator Wiley Post and navigator Harold Gatty's June 1931 record-breaking eight-day flight around the world. At Left Post's plane the "Winnie Mae" is about to land and Post leans out holding up two fingers and shouting "Lunch for two!" From a building at right labeled "October Field Moscow" three waiters rush each carrying a large platter one labeled "Zakuski" another "Cabbage Soup" and the third "Cucumbers". Moscow was one of fourteen stops the pair made on their famed flight. The middle panel titled "The Grave Digger gets a big surprise" must have been occasioned by an unexpected rise in the stock market. Next to a street sign showing "Broad" and "Wall" streets a wide-eyed bear rushes away from a tombstone dropping his shovel and exclaiming "Great Scott! He seems to be alive!" The tombstone reads "Mr. Bull / Fatally / Injured / in October / and November / 1929" and a dazed bull is pulling itself up out of the whole. The lower panel titled "When an Idealist runs up against a Realist" shows a puzzled Uncle Sam scratches his chin and reads a cable: "Cablegram / French Proposals / on Debt Moratorium / U.S. to Sacrifice $250000000 / Germany Gets the Benefit / on Only $150000000. / France Sacrifices / Nothing." To the right a sweaty little man gazes at a wall thermometer that's clearly rising pushing up his hat labeled "ADT" to mop his brow and exclaim "Whew!" Untitled six-panel cartoon whose theme seems to be the improvement of cities. Each of the three left-side panels contrasts its right-side counterpart. Top left panel addresses unsanitary conditions by depicting an early "horseless carriage" under repair while a team of horses watches in amusement; top right panel shows a surprised horse reading a notice outside a city limits that reads "Notice! Horses sheep cattle and hogs not allowed within the city limits." Middle left panel addresses temperance by depicting a busy street filled with bars and men entering each while middle right panel shows a street with a gas station soft drink stand and movie theatre. Bottom left panel addresses proper housing by depicting a freight train chugging along on weedy ugly tracks while the bottom right panel shows the same boxcars transformed into cute little homes and their tracks quaint little front yards being tended by proud homeowners. Labeled "Look out for a flood of currency bills when Congress convenes" by McCutcheon along the lower margin this single-panel cartoon depicts a horde of twenty older gents -- smoky back room politicos no doubt -- hurrying from the right middle ground into the left foreground where a large finger-pointing shaped sign staked into the ground reads "To the Congress." Next to this sign stands a huddling child wrapped up from the cold and a seated dog observing the parade. The full-length figure in the lead likely represents a Western state representative wearing cowboy hat and bolo tie chomping a cigar and clutching a carpetbag in one hand and a rolled-up scroll labeled "Bill for Solution of the Currency" in the other. All of the other figures clutch similar rolls one identified as "Bill for Elastic Currency" and the others "Currency Bill." The other gents are obviously supposed to represent various types of politicians -- old-school types in top hats and formal dress Theodore Roosevelt types in more modern attire Buffalo Bill-type goateed old-timers etc. A fascinating and amusing commentary on the many currency reform measures that peppered Congressional debate in the early years of the 20th century. The lower panel titled "Government ship inspection from illegible description" depicts a clerk in the foreground gazing at a large ship named "Vestris" saying "I guess that ship looks all right" and filing out a form. A handsome head-and-shoulders sepia-tone portrait Bachrach of McDowell in later years signed large and bold near the bottom in black ink: "Ever Yours / William Fraser McDowell." This Indiana attorney and politician served as that state's democratic 34th governor 1933-37 before being named High Commissioner to the Philippines 1937-39 and 1945-46 and then first U.S. ambassador to that newly-independent nation 1946-47; he was briefly considered a serious presidential contender in 1940. Signed original typescript 7pp 8" X 10½" Cleveland OH 30 July 1939. Very good. Faint age toning and two faint horizontal folds; staple hole at upper left well away from text; lacks page 5 of 8. Titled "Address by Hon. Paul V. McNutt / International Peace Day World's Poultry Congress / Cleveland Ohio Sunday July 30 1939" this double-spaced typescript contains McNutt's thoughts on the United State's pre-Pearl Harbor Day semi-isolationist attitudes towards peacekeeping in those tumultuous days. In part: "The United States is not responsible for international settlements outside the New World; and even less for the methods by which any nation chooses to govern itself. We do have an interest however first that other countries shall not attempt to force their political doctrines on us; second that in solving their difficulties they do not precipitate the world into a war which necessarily will affect the United States economically if indeed we can avoid being embroiled in actual military conflict." McNutt signs boldly and in full in black ink at the conclusion. Accompanied by a superb 9" X 7" black and white glossy news agency photograph International News Photos depicting McNutt at a formal banquet. Original mimeographed paper label affixed to verso captions this image "Xmas Party Manila 1938" and describes it as "President Eisenhower who was Gen. Douglas MacArthur's chief of staff in the Philippines from 1935-40 is shown at a Christmas party in 1938 with other American dignitaries. General then Major Eisenhower Mrs. MacArthur Paul McNutt High Commissioner of the Islands; Mrs. Eisenhower and Gen. MacArthur military advisor on the islands." Great image published here in 1955 showing McNutt as he appeared around the time he delivered this typescript speech. Most unusual in this format -- whether this is the actual typescript from which McNutt read this speech is not known but it is an actual typescript and not a mimeographed copy for press distribution. unknown

On delightfully corny letterhead of "Clyde McPhatter's Tune Shop" this rare letter was written shortly after his split from the Drifters and the height of his fame as a soloist. A gracious letter to an admirer reading in part: "Hope that you will like the little verse that I am sending you. Very sorry that I don't have any pictures at this time hope when you write again I'll have some on hand. So until then be good." Bold full signature. Two items: First an AQS 1p irregularly-trimmed roughly rectangular 8" X 4½" n.p. n.d. January 1958. Very good. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and two more small tape stains along right edge touching slightly upon a couple of words. Curious free verse poem or song lyrics -- whether to one of McPhatter's published songs is uncertain. "I want to walk in the shadow of your arms" it begins. "I want to live by the touch of your lips. I want to be in the River with you while the sea's calm I want to live and love I don't want to miss. I want to live with a love that's divine I want to be with you and give you all my love. I want to say that you are mine. I want to ask faith from the one above." Boldly signed at the conclusion. An unheard-of McPhatter rarity quite intriguing and exceedingly scarce -- and worthy of further research. Second an IPS 8" X 10" n.p. n.d. Very good. Faint yellow tape stain at each corner. Classy handsome half-length glossy portrait of a young smiling McPhatter in suit and tie inscribed large and bold in thick black marker at the upper right "To / 'Donald' / ALL the best / ALL the time! / Clyde McPhatter." Very choice and very scarce. McPhatter who suffered from alcoholism died of a heart attack at age 39 making his autograph material quite uncommon. unknown

No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. NOT a First Day Cover but a clever admirer had this envelope bearing an appropriate labor-related stamp cancelled in Meany's hometown New York City on his birthday August 16 -- which Meany then signs large and bold in purple fineline on the "sweet spot." Quite nice. Accompanied by a superb and scarce vintage glossy 9" X 7" news agency International News Photos photograph. Very good. Slight bit of edgewear. Candid half-length photograph of Meany standing alongside a smiling President Eisenhower. The original usually-absent mimeographed text printed on cheap acidic paper is still present dated 21 November 1952: "George Meany secretary-treasurer of the American Federation of Labor right shown as he talked with President-elect Eisenhower at the general's Commodore Hotel headquarters today. Shortly after this conference news broke of the death today of William Green longtime president of the American Federation of Labor. Meany now looms large as possible candidate to succeed Green as head of the labor organization." An unusual signed cover and a choice desirable photograph. unknown

Jamais je n'aurais rêvé un Tourny comme celui du portrait de Tocqué [...]" ; une L.A.S. d'un correspondant périgourdin disposant d'un "pastel semblable dans presque tous les détail à celui de "Jarreau-Dufau" que vous signalez" [ ... ] ; une L.A.S. de 4 pp. d'un courtier, libraire ou galeriste au 5 rue Cujas : "Vous êtes, depuis longtemps le maître incontesté de l'iconographie bordelaise [ ... ] Depuis que Daulos s'est retiré des affaires et que Strölin et Godefroid Mayer ont fait leurs malles pour l'étranger, on ne trouve plus de beaux choix de portraits classiques à Paris. Je suis passé hiers chez Gosselin, quai des Grands Augustins, qui possède un portefeuille très mêlé de Nanteuil. Pas de Pomponne. Il s'en est vendu un cet hiver à l'Hôtel Drouot. L'exemplaire était beau de tirage, quoiqu'avec le cachet, et en bonne conservation, quoique court de marge. J'ignore le prix d'adjudication, mais Gosselin qui l'a acheté, l'a vendu immédiatement 1500 fr [ etc... ]

Un feuillet plié en quatre, une page seule manuscrite. Adressée à un "confrère" non identifié pour s'excuser de ne pas pu se rendre à une représentation de sa pièce de théâtre, et pour lui demander de donner une scène pour la Revue Littéraire. Mécislas Golberg ou Mécislas Goldberg, né le 21 octobre 1869 à Płock (Pologne russe) et mort le 28 décembre 1907 en son domicile à Fontainebleau, est un poète, dramaturge, critique d'art, journaliste et essayiste libertaire d'origine polonaise qui a écrit son oeuvre en français. Dès 1899, il se réclame du sionisme libertaire.

Gewidmet ist die ansprechende halbfigürliche Darstellung dem “lieben Freund und Kollegen” Carl Baumann (1824-1907). - Der in Fürth geborene Schauspieler Leonhard Meck kam über Nürnberg, Hamburg, Bremen, Braunschweig und Magdeburg 1830 nach Frankfurt, wo er als Darsteller, Regisseur und seit 1848 auch als Musikdirektor wirkte. “Er zählte im Schauspiel und im Lustspiel zu den hervorragendsten Darstellern er[n]ster Väter und komischer Alten” (Philipp Stein, Dt. Schauspieler II, zit. n. DBA II 868, 123). - Der Lithograph Valentin Schertle (1809-1885) war Schüler und Gehilfe des nur um wenige Jahre älteren Lithographen und späteren Hofphotographen Franz Hanfstaengl (1804-1877) in München und Dresden. In St. Petersburg, Warschau und Frankfurt a. M. schuf er zahlreiche Lithographien nach Bildern von Delaroche, Raffael, Guido Reni u.a. Vgl. Thieme/Becker XXXX, 37.

2 SS. auf 2 Bll. Folio (223:282 mm). Jeweils mit gedruckter Bordüre (davon eines mit gedr. Fußzeile "Beitrag zum Selbstschriftenalbum 'Deutschlands Zukunft'" und gedr. Formular für biograph. Daten, eines mit montiertem Schildchen "Beitrag zum [...]"). Jedes Blatt aufgezogen auf einen Bogen Pergamentpapier (ca. 330:344 mm). "Die Epigonen machten stets den Geist zum Handlanger der Macht. Aber: 'Macht allein bezwingt nicht, sie muß der Handlanger des Geistes sein, nur dann ist sie von Dauer'. Das ist aller Staatsgründer gutes Prinzip! [...]". Die zweite Sentenz von ähnlichem, etwas abgewandeltem Inhalt. - Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928). Die erstgenannte Sentenz bei Veröffentlichung in Druckschrift wiedergegeben. - Walter Meckauer war von 1918 bis 1922 Leiter der schlesischen Ullstein-Redaktion, danach Dramaturg an mehreren deutschen Bühnen. Am Wiener Burgtheater debütierte sie 1897 als Hedwig Ekdal in Ibsens "Wildente", wurde im Alter von 19 Jahren Hofschauspielerin und "verkörperte zunächst Charakterrollen und die klassische Sentimentale, später Mutterrollen. Gasttourneen führten sie durch Österreich, Deutschland und die Schweiz. Darüber hinaus wirkte sie jedes Jahr bei den Salzburger Festspielen mit. 1947 erhielt sie den Professortitel" (DBE, s. v. "Krauspe"). 1948 trat sie als Ehrenmitglied des Burgtheaters in den Ruhestand.
