In part, Miro writes (in translation): "[...] I have just returned from Paris; Maeght and I think this exhibition should be postponed until the world comes out of this state of hysteria and madness. Since the paintings that we would send belong to private collections, and mine are being kept for my wife and daughter, we can not risk assuming such responsibility under the current circumstances. Please pass this information on to the Ambassador. I can only hope that the world will return to its senses, and in that case, I would be very honoured to do this exhibition, which, by the way, needs to be better organised [...]". Manuscript letterbook containing primary source, contemporary, information on notable early aviators and fascinating descriptions by a first-time observer of the new air travel inventions, written at Pau, France, the city where the Wright Brothers had established the first flying school in history just one year earlier, and where the aerospace industry was beginning to flourish, by Doris Dowser Todd, English Governess to Dr. Louis Goudard, a founder of the Société Médicale de Pau et du Béarn. In this volume, Miss Todd has transcribed her own letters, written to family, while in Pau, France. Towards the end of the volume she writes to a man of romantic interest. 8vo. 152 pages in manuscript. Burgundy cloth boards, initials and border blindstamped to front, ruled leaves with the globe motif watermark of Midland Educational Company Birmingham. Inserted within the volume: one contemporary theatre program, one draft letter, one personalia document dating to the Great War. This Polish-born American theatrical photographer set up shop on Broadway in New York in the 1920s and in the '30s developed a compelling portraiture style that made him sought after on the East coast. PS heavy stock 5" X 7" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Undated ca. 1935 head and shoulders portrait of a dark-haired young women in typical Mitchell pose -- shoulders at left but facing rightward and head turned to the right. This subject has her hair parted in the middle and pulled tight; she gazes to her right viewer's left with the barest hint of a Mona Lisa smile. In the dark lower left corner Mitchell signs boldly in his usual white ink making for superb contrast. And in the light area at lower right the unidentified subject signs boldly in black grease pencil: "To Eddie / Tamara" also with superb contrast. While we haven't been able to identify the subject she is most likely an actress or perhaps a ballet figure. "Tamara" suggests Russian and Mitchell did photograph a number of Les Ballets Russes ballerinas. A lovely vintage piece signed by a premiere photographer. unknown

An den Rechtspraktikanten Julius Newald (1824-97) mit der Mitteilung von dessen Zulassung "zur öffentlichen Agenten-Prüfung" und der Aufforderung zur diesbezüglichen Vorsprache beim zuständigen Statthalterei-Rat Friedrich Swieceny. - Georg von Mitis durchlief eine lange Laufbahn ihm öffentlichen Dienst und war zur Zeit des vorliegenden Schreibens bereits seit vier Jahren Präsident des Landesgerichts Wien. "Den Vorschlag, Statthalter von NÖ zu werden, lehnte er ab, um im Justizdienst bleiben zu können" (ÖBL VI, s. v.); während der Erkrankung des Justizministers Adolf Frh. Pratobevera von Wiesborn vertrat er eineinhalb Jahre lang die Administrativgeschäfte des Ministers und diesen selbst auch im Reichsrat. - Rechtspraktikant Newald schloß sein Studium 1858 ab, wurde 1864 Mitglied des Wiener Gemeinderats und amtierte von 1878-82 als Bürgermeister von Wien. "Im Kompetenzstreit, der nach dem Ringtheaterbrand (1881) ausgebrochen war, wurde er angeklagt, schließlich aber freigesprochen und rehabilitiert. 1882 trat er jedoch von seinem Amt zurück. Newald erwarb sich um die Bauordnung, Donauregulierung, den Bau der Hochquellenwasserleitung und um den Neubau des Rathauses große Verdienste" (ÖBL VII, s. v.). - Mit einer einmontierten zeitgenöss. With a reference to a 400 Franc cheque as well as the date in blue ballpoint. - To the same, about having carried a cheque about with him for three months, which he just decided to mail instead of waiting for their next meeting: "Je traine ce chèque sur moi depuis trois mois comptant vous le remettre lors d'une prochaine visite. Comme cela tarde je préfère vous l'envoyer ci joint [...]". - Both with printed letterhead. Slightly creased.

I. 1992). - Weiters dankt die Autorin für einige Texte, die Opel verfaßt hat: "Um eine Ergänzung möchte ich ganz dringend bitten: ich halte nämlich meinen (letzten) Roman 'Alle unsere Spiele' 1977 für ebenso gut und ebenso wichtig wie das Jugendwerk [...] Als 'Korrektur' wünsche ich mir auch, daß 'Kardinal Mindszenty' nicht bei den 'nahestehenden' Persönlichkeiten genannt wird, - ich habe nie persönlich mit ihm gesprochen! - stattdessen aber Theodor Kramer [...] Zur Aufzählung der Orden gehört unbedingt das 'Ehrenzeichen für Wissenschaft und Kunst', 1986, die höchste Auszeichnung des öster. Staates! Mindert es nicht die 'Seriosität' Ihrer Hinweise, wenn Sie behaupten, ich gelte 'als führende katholische Schriftstellerin im deutschen Sprachraum'?? Schön wär's! [...]" (Brief v. 30. VIII. 1992). - Das mit "Entwurf des statements zu Filmaufnahme. Der Fischer (?)" überschriebene, mit zahlreichen Bearbeitungsmerkmalen (Korrekturen, Streichungen u. a.) versehene Manuskript ist eine eindringliche Reflexion der 85jährigen Schriftstellerin über ihr Leben, über Begegnungen und Korrespondenz mit Rainer Maria Rilke, Stefan Zweig, Klaus Mann, Theodor Kramer, Theodor Däubler u. a. - Der aus Wien stammende Adolf Opel war nach seiner Promotion als Journalist, Kulturpublizist, Kritiker und Regisseur tätig. 1966 schrieb er zusammen mit Georg Tressler (geb. 1917) das Drehbuch zu dessen "Weibsteufel" (nach dem gleichnamigen Theaterstück von Karl Schönherr). Der Schwerpunkt seines filmischen Schaffens liegt in der Auseinandersetzung mit Schriftstellern und Literaten wie H.C. Artmann, Franz Theodor Csokor, Albert Drach, Victor Frankl, Erika Mitterer, Hans Weigel, Simon Wiesenthal u. a. Als Herausgeber zeichnet er u. a. für die Edition der Werke von Adolf Loos verantwortlich; zu seinen eigenen Werken zählen neben Dramen (darunter "Durst vor dem Kampf", 1969) Arbeiten über Adolf Loos, Ingeborg Bachmann sowie Wanda und Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. - Beiliegend das Programm eines der Dichterin zu Ehren von der Österr. Ges. für Literatur gemeinsam mit dem P.E.N.-Club veranstalteten Symposions (17. und 18. September 2001).
