Very Good Turkish Original typescript document signed 'Mazhar' with signature. Sent to 'Bakirköy Jandarma Bölük Kumandanligi'. 21x15 cm. In Turkish (Modern). 1 p. This document is a death certificate which is notified to Turkish Gendarmerie Command of Bakirköy. Signed by Mazhar Osman Uzman as 'bastabip' [i.e. chief physician]. Mazhar Osman was a mental diseases specialist, physician who founded the first modern Turkish mental health hospital in Turkey. Bakirköy Psychiatric Hospital (Bakirköy Mazhar Osman Mental Health and Neurological Diseases Education and Research Hospital), is a mental health hospital of the Health Ministry located in Bakirköy district of Istanbul, Turkey. The hospital is named after Mazhar Osman, who is also considered as the founder of modern psychiatry in Turkey. It was established with the initiative of Dr. Mazhar Osman (1884-1951) and approval of Minister of Health Refik Saydam (1881-1942) in the premises of Resadiye Barracks at Bakirköy, Istanbul on October 15, 1924.

Nova, one to Stefano, and one to an unnamed "amici". - Accompanied by a lithographic portrait; mostly written on very thin paper with small damages to edges and traces of mounting. - Letter to the "amici" / friends from the end of the first page to the end of the letter: "Come dissi fin da quando ci vedevamo la / prima volta, non posso negare che mi sorge / spesso dentro il pensiero: 'Se vediamo che / il sorgere di Piac. presenti l'opportunità alle / città d'Italia, perché non lo potrà il sorgere di / Genova?' "Bien que souffrant", Maël tient à remercier son correspondant pour ce qu'il a "fait en faveur de Rose Héré". En effet, Rose Héré a sauvé du naufrage 14 marins marseillais du navire Le Vesper le 1er novembre 1903, après être tombée à l'eau en voulant les diriger, tout cela au large d'Ouessant. L'académie de Marseille, en raison de l'origine des marins, lui donnera un prix qui mettra "cette pauvre fille […] jusqu'à la fin de ses jours à l'abri du besoin". Pierre Maël remercie aussi Charles Vincens pour l'article sur son roman Fleur des roses.

This Ohio republican was named chairman of the powerful Federal Communications Commission by President in Eisenhower in 1954 but resigned in 1957 in the face of bribery charges involving the awarding of television channels in Miami and Pittsburgh. TLS 1p 6 3/4" X 9" Washington DC 1956 February 13. Addressed to Bruno J. Gianetti. Very good. Single 1" scotch tape stain not affecting text and mounting traces on verso. On Federal Communications Commission letterhead a fun letter to the parents of a boy named George: "By George I think you have a Capitol idea even though I make no claim to fame. If I can improve as much as your little George grows in stature by the time he is old enough to understand your book his name could be mor exemplary. At least you have furnished me with an additional incentive to not let George do it alone. I have a son named George too who is also working to add meaning to the name. Since I understand George whether large or small I know that your George will get my message because he is wired for sound too." Bold full signature in blue fountain pen. A gracious and thoughtful response; unfortunately despite his lofty language McConnaughey would be resigning under questionable circumstances about a year later. unknown

Grandson of inventor Robert McCormick nephew of reaper inventor Cyrus Hall McCormick father of editors Joseph Medill McCormick and "Colonel" Robert R. McCormick -- this career diplomat joined the State Department in 1887 serving as U.S. ambassador to Austria-Hungary 1902 Russia 1902-05 and France 1905-07 although according to one journalist McCormick's "career as a dilettante diplomat took a backseat to his more serious pursuit of alcohol." Autograph Fragment unsigned on printed calling card heavy stock 3" X 1½" London England n.y. Near fine. Handsome italic "Mr. Robert McCormick" printed at center and beneath this McCormick has penned in brown ink in his small neat hand "Hotel Belgravia / Victoria Street S.W." Likely dates from early in his State Department career else a title such as "Ambassador" would have preceded his name. The card bears a heavy printed black border or "mourning rule" but since it's difficult to assign a date to this it's also difficult to determine what death in his family would have occasioned the mourning border. The Victoria Street area of southwest London is appropriate as it was chock full of foreign embassies and McCormick must have been on some State Department assignment there. Not signed alas but a most unusual item nevertheless. unknown

McCRACKEN, Harold (1894-1983)

This American author photographer cinematographer and producer co-founded the Buffalo Bill Historical Center and the Whitney Museum of Western Art; as an explorer he led a group that attempted to prove a land bridge once existed between Alaska and Siberia; his numerous books include "Beyond the Frozen Frontier" 1936 and many titles about cowboys big game hunting and artists of the American West. TNS 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 1940 October 4. Addressed to Arnold Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On letterhead of "Courier Productions" a documentary film production company he founded McCracken tells an admirer he "deeply appreciated your very pleasant remembrance of my birthday as well as the nice things said about 'Beyond the Frozen Frontier'. Although I have no immediate plans for another book I have been flirting with a couple of ideas which may materialize." As indeed they did with "The Biggest Bear on Earth" published in 1943 and several other titles released in the '40s. Signed boldly in full. An exceptionally early example. unknown

McCrary / Secy of War / Nov 16 1877" penned in brown ink on the verso of his printed "The Secretary of War" calling card heavy stock 3½" X 2¼" n.p. Near fine. Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 18" n.p. 1929. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear and mild soiling. Labeled "Putting their Sincerity to the Test" by McCutcheon along the lower margin this single-panel cartoon depicts President Herbert Hoover full length front and center and facing right wonderfully executed as he stands in front of a circular table. With his arms he presents a large scroll laid out on this table which reads in full: "Proper defense requires military strength relative to that of other nations. We will reduce our strength in proportion to any other. It remains for the others to say how low they will go. It cannot be too low for us. Hoover's Armistic Day address." Hoover is saying "There! Now let's see if you're really sincere in wanting to give your tax payers some relief from their armament burdens." Behind Hoover at the left of the drawing a sketchy figure of a worried-looking Uncle Sam sits astride huge sacks of money labeled "U.S. Resources." In front of Hoover at the right of the drawing stand six attentive listeners: A portly "Britain" in Edwardian getup sports a Union Jack vest while alongside him a shadowy figure is hunched by the huge sack he hoists labeled "British Armament Burden on the Tax Payer"; "France" in military uniform scratches his bewhiskered chin while a similar hunched figure strains under a sack labeled "French Naval Burden on the Tax Payers"; behind these figures stand "Japan" in military uniform a "Japanese Burden" sack just visible at his side and "Italy" in military uniform sack at his side. On November 11 1929 Hoover had expressed these Armistice Day sentiments in a speech given before the Annual Convention of the Mississippi Valley Association. This drawing which McCutcheon dates "Nov. 13" at lower left is a superb and provocative example of McCutcheon's ability to humanize political concepts to make abstract notions concrete. And artistically this rendering of Hoover is among his very best. Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. unknown

Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 18½" n.p. n.y. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear. A cryptic untitled cartoon consisting of five panels: two across the top one across the middle and two across the bottom. The upper left of the top two panels shows traces of a title underneath pencilled in McCutcheon's hand but erased for some unknown reason that reads: "The Invention as applied to the Automobile." This drawing shows a crazy-looking automobile apparently coal-powered for it bears two large smokestacks bearing a fashionable couple zipping along one of them marveling "A marvelous invention! It cheers the heart sweetens the breath and prevents bagging at the knees." To the right of this the next panel depicts a biplane aloft also apparently coal-powered showing one large smokestack cruising above the earth a voice from within asking "Hey down there is this the right road to Singapore" From the earth far below appears a voice bubble containing Chinese characters. A pencilled caption in McCutcheon's hand below this has likewise been erased a couple words decipherable but not enough to make sense of it. The large wide middle panel shows a gargantuan metal ship -- a sailing ship and steamboat appear small as ants in the foreground -- chugging along also apparently coal-powered with several humongous smokestacks. The lower left panel depicts a strange propeller-driven rocket of some sort again apparently coal-powered showing a smokestack -- possibly a missile -- zipping from west to east far above the earth; a pair of tiny figures on North America seem to cheer it along and its destination in Europe is a tiny city outcropping labeled "Potsd--." Finally at lower right the last panel shows two tiny figures in what might be a junkyard. In the foreground is a pile labeled "Coal 5 Cents a Ton" but filling the background left to right are three massive oil storage containers marked "Standard Oil Co." with a sign poking out reading "For Sale Cheap to Right Party" next to this a building with smokestacks and a sign reading "Power Plant for Sale" next to this a huge structure and a sign reading "Gas Plant for Sale or Rent Will Subdivide to Suit Tenant" and lastly several enormous metal tubes and a sign reading "Bargains in Old Boilers." Signed simply "McCutcheon" at lower right as usual. Presumably McCutcheon is commenting on depressed prices of various fuel sources at this time and the continued availability of coal unknown

Pulitzer prize-winning editorial cartoonist with the "Chicago Tribune" 1903-45. Signed ink drawing 14¼" X 16" n.p. n.y. probably 1918. Very good. Slightest bit of edgewear. Fun and handsome two-panel cartoon titled "Reciprocity" along the bottom in McCutcheon's hand with two subtitles. The top panel is titled "They've been giving you a lot to cheer about." It was first titled "They are giving you something to cheer about now" but McCutcheon altered some of the language in pencil. This depicts a group of prancing cheering men hats flung up in the air and behind them a bulletin board with the announcement "War Bulletin / Allies / Investing / St. Quentin." The Germans had attacked this French city in March 1918 just before large numbers of American troops reached the front. The lower panel is titled "Next week it will be your turn to give them something to cheer about." As wi the previous caption McCutcheon altered the original -- which read "You must give them something to cheer about next week" -- in pencil. Here another group of men -- this time all soldiers -- prace and cheer with various helmets tossed up in the air. Behind them to the left a bulletin board reads "Important! / Americans / Investing in / Liberty Bonds" while to the right appear blackened ruins. Signed simply "McCutcheon" as usual. unknown
