Napoleon, Emperor of the French (1769-1821).
Letter signed ("Napoleon"). Paris, 18. II. 1812.
Folio. 2 pp. A letter to Rear Admiral Count Batte instructing him how to move a part of the flotilla from Boulogne-sur-Mer to Cherbourg. - Napoléon informs Count Batte about his intention to move 9 prams, 4 bombers and 40 canon shallops of the new type without delay from Boulogne to Cherbourg. The division will be equipped with the 12th and 14th garrison of the flotilla and on its arrival at Cherbourg it will remain without any special commander. As the simultaneous departure of such a number of ships would cause inconveniences, Napoléons asks Count Batte to organize the departure in sections of 3, 6 or 9 ships and to send off such a number one after the other as the circumstances will allow him to. Napoléon is convinced that he has to facilitate the passage. He asks Count Batte not to leave Boulogne until at least half of the totality of the ships will have appeared and his activities will be confirmed to him. Napoléon tells Count Batte to make sure not to miss any occasion to increase the departure of sections of the flotilla taking into consideration that the season is still very favourable for this movement and that any delay could cause an infinite retardation of success. Napoléon informs Count Batte that upon his arrival at Cherbourg the Ministry of the Navy will address him with instructions concerning the task that he has to fulfill and concerning the ultimate destination of this important part of the flotilla. Napoléon ends his letter by pleading to god to keep Rear Admiral Count Batte in good health. - Some tiny holes (not touching the signature).

Napoléon I, Emperor of the French (1769-1821).
Autograph letter (fragment). N. p., [after 22 Dec. 1793].
4to. ¾ p. Final page of the broullion of a letter to an unidentified recipient, possibly to M. Perrier, director of the arsenal of Marseille, or Sucy, commissaire des guerres. The letter, which contained extensive instructions on the deployment of artillery, was obviously written at the end of 1793 or in early 1794, immediately after the Fall of Toulon, when the Republicans won an early victory over a Royalist rebellion and Napoleon was "inspecteur des côtes". The fragment preserved here begins with the words "Le fondeur est", which are struck out, then continues: "Roux, fondeur, ést venu me demander que l'on fixe le prix de sa journée. La municipalité doit fixer le maximum sur cet objet, comme sur tant d'autres. Je crois qu'il vaut mieux payer tant par quintal de balles que par jours. Vous pouvez, pour cela, faire fixer la journée qui doit toujours être l'élément de toutes les mesures". - Lower left corner torn off (not touching text); some brownstaining, otherwise a perfect sheet. Once in the collection of André de Coppet (1892-1953), now stored at the Firestone Library, Princeton. J. Arnna, Pages de l’épopée impériale (no. 6, reproduced on pl. XIV). Correspondance générale I, p. 155f., no. 130.

Napoléon I, Emperor of the French (1769-1821).
Autograph manuscript (6½ lines). Saint Helena, 1815.
102:103 mm. Mounted on a single page (8vo) together with a contemporary handwritten transcription. Notes on the Battle of Voltri (1796): "Rampon et la Harpe [-] par le Gal en chef lui meme la deroute fut complette tout le corps d'Argenteau fut ecrase dans le tem[p]s queu Beaulieu descendait a Voltri ou il ne trouvait plus personne" (transl.: "Rampon and la Harpe - by the commanding General himself - defeat was complete - all of d'Argenteau's corps was erased while Beaulieu descended to Voltri, where he found nobody left"). - With a certification of authenticity at the bottom: "corrections de la campagne d'Italie écrit par Napoleon à Briars, isle Ste helene en 1815 / Cte. de Las Cases". Emmanuel, comte de Las Cases and his son accompanied the former emperor to Saint Helena. There, he acted informally but very assiduously as his secretary, taking down numerous notes of his conversations which thereafter took form in the famous "Mémorial de Sainte-Hélène".

Napoléon I, Emperor of the French (1769-1821).
Draft for a letter with several autograph corrections. Paris, 20 ventôse 13 (March 11, 1805).
4to. ½ p. Rare draft for a letter to his Minister of Finances, Charles Gaudin (1756-1841), asking for more information about aid to the veterans of Piedmont as they would soon be his subjects in the newly created Kingdom of Italy: "Monsieur Gaudin, je vous renvoie vos états sur les biens des camps de vétérans en Piémont. Je désire que vous me fassiez un rapport d'une page, qui me fasse connaitre 'la loi a affecté' la quotité des biens que la loi a affectés aux camps de vétérans dans la 27è division militaire, combien il y en a déjà de désignées pour ce service et ce qu'il y manque" [Mister Gaudin, I return your budget of the assets of the veterans' camps in Piedmont to you. I want you to compile a one page report for me that informs me 'the law has affected' the share of the assets that the law has affected in the veterans' camps of the 27th military division, how many have already been appointed for this service and what it lacks"]. - Because of the many corrections the letter was never signed or sent. Every line has been partly crossed out or modified by the Emperor. - Napoleon's coronation as Emperor of the French had only taken place three months prior at which occasion the deputies of the Italian Republic officially offered the crown of Italy to him. On March 17, 1805 the political transformation of the Italian Republic to the Kingdom of Italy (1805-1814) was put into effect. The letter to Charles Gaudin relates to this process as Napoleon wanted to be fully informed about the financial obligations to the veterans of Piedmont, his new subjects.

Napoléon I, Emperor of the French (1769-1821).
Printed naval patent signed ("Np"). Le palais des Tuileries [Paris], 25 March 1813.
490 x 350 mm. Blank form. Naval patent for an unidentified American boat, counter-signed by trade secretary Jean-Baptiste Henry Collin (1776-1837), state secretary Pierre Antoine Noël Bruno comte Daru (1767-1829), naval secretary Denis Decrès (1761-1820), and the director general of customs. Fine document from the age of the Napoleonic Wars, when the English army had occupied the Iberian Peninsula, fighting against Napoléon's troops, and field marshal Wellington was about to commence his final (and ultimately successful) attack. The present letter patent was issued by the French consul in Charlestown, New York, Boston or Baltimore and permitted American ships to move more or less freely toward France. The British warships were blocking the U.S. ports and obstructing American trade with France - one of the causes for the War of 1812, not resolved until December 1814. - Large reinforced tears to folds; slight edge damage, otherwise in good condition. Left edge trimmed, touching the printed text of the counter-leaf.

1 S. 8vo. Auf Briefpapier mit blindgepr. Monogramm.

Naquet, Alfred, chemist and politician (1834-1916).
Autograph letter signed ("A. Naquet"). Paris, 19 May 1891.
Large 8vo. 3 pp. on bifolium. To "Mr. - On stationery with printed letterhead; fol. 2 with small label, ms. number and monogram stamp "LS".

Typed letter signed ("Gamal Nasser"). Cairo, 24. VIII. 1953.
4to. 1 page. To Neel Goldblatt of Goldblatt Brothers Inc. in Chicago: "With pleasure, I received your letter and with pleasure I send you back the stamps with my signature on each although I never think of myself as a great person in this world. The only truth in my person is that I am fighting with all my patriots to live as free people in a free country in the free democratic world. We Egyptians, believe that this [!] a very justified demand. Unfortunately the Britishers do not agree with us and wish we live [!] as slaves under their domination. Our fight, now, is to force the British to understand our case and evacuate the Canal zone and thus gain our freindship [!] instead of our hateree [!]. To realize our aim, we are ready to sacrifice our lives. This is one side of a small picture of myself and you can find, Dear Sir, that there is no greatness in it but there is truth, faith and hope [...]". - Signed as General Secretary on a letterhead printed in Arabic. The addressee was a Polish-American-Jewish collector and member of the Goldblatt family that owned Goldblatt Bros. department stores in the Midwest headquartered in Cicago. In upper left corner traces of a staple. - Black and white photography (125:78 mm) added, showing Nasser waving, in the background an enormous crowd of people demonstrating.

"Il y aura aussi 3 poèmes que j'ai écrits à la mémoire de Renée Vivien."" • Signed autograph letter to a friend
Paris 1952. Fine. Paris samedi 29 novembre 1952 13.50 x 20.80 cm une page sur un feuillet Handwritten signed letter addressed to a friend: “There will also be three poems that I wrote in memory of Renée Vivien” Paris Saturday 29 November 1952 135 x 208 cm one page on a leaf Handwritten letter signed by Natalie Clifford Barney addressed to a friend and written in black ink on a stationery from 20 rue Jacob Paris VIe. Central fold from having been sent. Interesting letter mentioning a future reading of Natalie Clifford Barney: ”A literary hour must be devoted to me this Wednesday at 5pm 41 rue des Petits champs. This session of my poems and thoughts will be accompanied by 4 melodies by Florent Schmidt.” The so-called “literary hour” will also be a tribute to one of Natalie's greatest loves who died several decades earlier: “There will also be 3 poems that I wrote in memory of Renée Vivien.” The two women experienced an intense and tumultuous relationship in their youth. After the tragic and early death of her lover Natalie Clifford Barney continued to honor her memory notably by becoming a patron of the Prix Renée-Vivien created by the baroness Hélène de Zuylen another of Renée's lovers. It is at the end of 1899 and through Violette Shillito that Renée Vivien – then Pauline Tarn – met Natalie Clifford Barney ""this American woman softer than a scarf whose sparkling face shines with golden hair sea blue eyes never-ending teeth"" Colette Claudine à Paris. Natalie who had just experienced a summer romance with the scandalous Liane de Pougy who introduced her to sapphism paid little attention to this new acquaintance. Renée on the other hand was totally captivated by the young American woman and describes this love at first sight in her autobiographical novel Une femme m'apparut: ""I lived again the hour already well past when I saw her for the first time felt the shiver that ran through me when my eyes met the mortal steel of her look those eyes blue and piercing as a blade. I had a dim premonition that this woman would determine the pattern of my fate and that her face was the predestined face of my Future. Near her I felt the luminous dizziness which comes at the edge of an abyss or the attraction of a very deep water. She radiated the charm of danger which drew me to her inexorably."" ""Winter 1899-1900. Beginnings of the idyll. One evening Vivien is invited by her new friend to Mme Barney's studio Natalie's mother 153 avenue Victor-Hugo on the corner of the rue de Longchamp. Natalie finds the courage to read the verses of her composition. As Vivien tells her to love these verses she tells her that it is better to love the poet. A response worthy of the Amazon."" J.-P. Two years of unequal happiness will follow punctuated by Natalie's recurring infidelities and Renée's sickly jealousy the letters of which oscillate between inflamed declarations and painful admissions of guilt. ""Renée Vivien is the daughter of Sappho and Baudelaire she is the 1900 flower of evil with fevers broken-up fights sad delights."" Jean Chalon Portrait d'une séductrice In 1901 a major break-up occurred which lasted almost two years; Renée despite requests from Natalie and the others she sent to win her back resisted. ""The two friends saw each other again and in August 1905 went on a pilgrimage to Lesbos which was a disappointment for Natalie Barney and was short-lived. . The spring was broken once and for all. The two former friends stopped seeing each other in 1907 and Vivien died without them seeing each other again."" J.-P. Goujon ibid. unknown

Nathaniel Branden
Honoring the Self. Personal integrity and the heroic potentials of human nature [signed]
Los Angeles, Jeremy P. Tarcher / Houghton Miffin, 1983. First edition, second printing. Boldly signed by Nathaniel Branden on the first free endpaper (not a tip-in). In-4, 23 x 27 cm, 271 pp. Original dust jacket with flaps. Table of contents at the beginning. A small defect at the top of the DJ and at the bottom of the spine, otherwise VG. Pages are crisp and clear. Nathaniel Branden's Honoring the Self is a cornerstone of self-esteem psychology. The author was a long friend of Ayn Rand before launching his own, close yet unmistakably his, brand of worldview and knowledge of the human mind. "Tell me how a person judges his or her self-esteem," says pioneering psychologist Nathaniel Branden, "and I will tell you how that person operates at work, in love, in sex, in parenting, in every important aspect of existence--and how high he or she is likely to rise. The reputation you have with yourself--your self-esteem--is the single most important factor for a fulfilling life." (Inside flap)
