Il a fallu le recopier pour le présenter à la Signature. Je vous remercie des billets que vous avez bien voulu m'envoyer. Mais permettez-moi de vous les rehausser. Quand nous les acceptons c'est toujours des premieres places [...]". - Apart from his work as a librettist and translator, Émilien Pacini was a theatre censor at the Ministry of the Interior. A friend of Rossini's, he wrote the lyrics for a cantata composed for the International Exposition (1867) in Paris. - On stationery with printed letterhead of the "Commission d'Examen des Ouvrages dramatiques" at the "Ministère de la Maison de l'Empereur et des beaux-arts". With a minor tear.

"Nur wenn ein Jeder, an seinem Platz und mit seinen Fähigkeiten, ohne Rücksicht auf die Höhe der Entlohnung, sucht das Beste zu vollbringen, was er irgendwie kann, dürfen wir auf eine bessere Zukunft hoffen [...]". Im Brief formuliert Cornelia Paczka ihre Sentenz erneut und bittet um Hinzufügung des Wortes "ungenügende" vor "Höhe der Entlohnung". Geschrieben als Beitrag für die von Friedrich Koslowsky im Berliner Eigenbrödler-Verlag herausgegebene Faksimile-Anthologie "Deutschlands Köpfe der Gegenwart über Deutschlands Zukunft" (1928), jedoch nicht darin aufgenommen. - Mit leichter Rostspur einer Büroklammer.

Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Folio. 2 pp. on bifolium with address and papered seal. Decree: large folio (ca. 430 x 540 mm) with printed coat of arms. Two documents from Padilla's short term in 1595 as acting Spanish Governor of Milan, substiting for Juan Fernández de Velasco, 5th Duke of Frías. The signed document concerns a new duty on salt shipments to Milan on the river Po imposed by the Duke of Mantua, Vincenzo I Gonzaga. Padilla approves the suggestion of the Milanese magistrate to send a legate to the Duke so as to "represent the damage to his Majesty" and negotiate the tax. - The printed decree announces an extensive privilege for the production, storage, acquisition, and sale of saltpeter in the Duchy granted to Ruggero Robecco and his representatives. - Pedro de Padilla was a general of John of Austria from 1569 to 1571, serving in the decisive Battle of Lepanto. From 1585 to 1589, Padilla served as Governor of Oran and Mazalquivir in Algeria. Following his brief assignment as acting Governor of Milan, Padilla returned to Granada, where he died in 1599. - Handwritten document co-signed by three Spanish officials and with parallel cuts typical for Spanish-Milanese documents. With browning to the margins and minor tears, several small holes partly affecting the text. - The printed decree shows traces of folds and two insignificant tears to the folds. The year 1595 and the word 'saltpeter' are noted in brown ink on the verso of the document.

Album of 12 autograph manuscripts signed by Paganini, Rossini and others, containing mainly complete songs and piano pieces. 1) Paganini, Niccolò. Album-leaf comprising two chromatic scale-passages in contrary motion, each spanning two octaves, twenty-six bars music in all, notated for treble & bass in brown ink on three two-stave systems, signed and inscribed ("All' Egregia Madamigella Clara Mangin ... Boulogne, li 15. Agosto 1834 Nicolò Paganini"). - 2) Rossini, Gioachino. Autograph manuscript of "Mi lagnerò tacendo", signed ("G. Rossini"), comprising a sixteen-bar setting of Metastasio's text, notated in dark brown ink on two three-stave systems per page, [c.1836], 2 pages. This is a fine album of the 1830s-1840s, containing mainly complete works rather than short quotations. Rossini's song is one of many such settings that the composer made of his favourite Metastasian poem. The volume was given to Clara Stéphanie Mangin of Boulogne in 1834, in recognition of winning a music prize. We learn from the three-page piano work by George Onslow in 1846 that Clara had become Comtesse d'Espinay Theix Royat; the Château de Theix was near Clermont-Ferrand.

The "Hühnerdieb" fountain in Aachen, along with a sculpture group of two bears playing with their cubs at the entrance of Jungfernheidepark and several busts of Adolf Hitler constitute some of his principal works. - Some ink spots; small creases near upper margin and upper left corner. Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. The Mecklenburg physician Scharlau (b. 1888) assembled a collection of artists' autographs by personal application.

Third person ANS 1p 4½" X 7¼" Washington DC 1846 December 7. Addressed to Mr. Young. Very good. Bit of mild age toning and minor touch of foxing. "Mr. Pageot presents his compliments to Mr. Young & begs leave to remind him of the case of appraisement he submitted to him some time ago also of the collection of the circulars in relation to the Tariff & warehouse uptown which he was good enough to promise to furnish him." I supplied as much as was wanted for the being brought to England, and Edmund has more than enough for all other things. Affectionately yours, James Paget. Let me say that I should have telegraphed to you but that I was not sure of your address". - Die vorwiegend in Spanien, Frankreich und Italien tätige Malerin Elise Paget (ca. 1846-89) war bekannt für ihre Portraits und Landschaften in Öl und Aquarell. Wie der Adressat und die im Brief erwähnten Brüder Fred und Edward war sie ein Kind von James Pagets älterem Bruder Frederick (1805-67), der sich in Wien niederließ und dort 1851 das "Erste Privilegienbureau" für Patentvertretungen eröffnete; zu den frühesten Kunden des Unternehmens zählten Thomas Edison, Henry Bessemer und George Pullmann. Charles Octavius wurde seines Vaters Nachfolger; er starb 1909 in Mürzzuschlag.

"(Goethe) Nimmer sich beugen, Kräftig sich zeigen, Rufet die Arme der Götter herbei". - Zunächst Schauspieler, wurde Pagin bei Patzelt-Norini in Wien zum Tenor ausgebildet. 1885 debütierte er am Carltheater, war dann Operettensänger am Stadttheater in Heidelberg, in Nürnberg und trat 1886-91 am Friedrich-Wilhelmstädtischen Theater in Berlin auf. Anschließend am Residenztheater in Dresden tätig, wurde er 1892 an das Theater an der Wien engagiert, wo er zahlreiche Operettenrollen übernahm.

- 14 Février 1968, 20,5x27cm, deux feuillets. - Lettre autographe datée du 14 Février 1968 et signée de deux pages de Marcel Pagnol, trois traces de trombone et pliures inhérentes au placement de la lettre dans une enveloppe. Dans cette lettre, Marcel Pagnol fait part à son correspondant, d'une discussion qu'il a eu, à Monaco et avec Philippe Rageneau, alors directeur des programmes des deux chaines de télévision que compte la France, "d'un projet d'émission pour les fêtes de fin d'année." Réjoui par cette perspective de la présentation d'une oeuvre inédite, il s'est mis au travail mais doute, faute de temps, de la réalisation heureuse du projet. C'est pourquoi, il propose spontanément "un conte de Noël qui n'est jamais passé sur vos antennes, mais qui est assez connu dans le monde puisqu'il en existe des éditions scolaires pour des collèges étrangers, et des traductions en plusieurs langues. Lettre relative à une pièce "Burlesque" que Pagnol n'a pas voulu livrer, l'estimant trop mauvaise - Pagnol se dit "littéralement empoisonné par l'affaire Burlesque" et l'explique: "J'ai signé avec la Marwyn un contrat pour traduire Burlesque, pièce américaine - La Marwyn a signé avec Mr Rozenberg un contrat pour produire Burlesque à l'Athénée - J'ai dit que ni Rozenberg ni Soria ne pouvaient jouer le rôle....- ...la seule scène ..qui m'interessait...avait déjà été mise dans Broadway" - C'est pourquoi il a demandé l'annulation du contrat ce qui avait été accepté - Mais il apprend que "Rosenberg parlait de [le] poursuivre en cinq cent mille francs de dommages et intérêts!!!" - Il assure que si on le force à livrer Burlesque, il n'en fera qu'une traduction littérale, que la pièce est mauvaise et que Charles Méré va faire jouer Music Hall "qui enlevera à Burlesque toute la nouveauté du milieu dans lequel se passe l'action puisque c'est le même"-

4to. Together (1½+1½ =) 3 pp. Interesting letters about two of Pagnol's most important works. The first letter concerns his 1938 drama "La femme du boulanger" ("The Baker's Wife"); while the recipient wishes to rewrite the film for the stage, Pagnol doubts whether this would work due to the many close-ups: "Je ne sais pas si la femme de boulanger est une bonne pièce de théâtre, car c'est un film de gros plans. Peut-être faudrait-il, dans la mise en scène, suivre le Boulanger avec un projecteur, comme au music-hall? Si vous allez voir la représentation de Guy Alland, pensez-y [...]" (Paris, 23 Nov. 1964). In fact, the film even became the basis of an American musical in 1989. - The second letter refers to his play "Topaze" from 1928. The comedy in four acts was filmed in 1936 under the same title, and 1966 saw a TV adaptation. Pagnol is pleased with the success: "Jamais aucune de mes pièces n'a eu tant de publicité, et si bien placée: je vous en suis particulièrement reconnaissant, et la montée presque continue des recettes me réjouit; non pas à cause du succès d'argent: il me semple que notre réussite, près de quarante ans après la création, est beaucoup plus importante qu'un triomphe de générale [...]" (Paris, 1 Dec. 1966). - On stationery with printed name. To an employee named Marti with instructions for Pagnol's relocation to Monte Carlo, questions of accounting, and concerning the impossibility of a film production in Monaco: "Pour le déménagement, laisse les tapis, un secrétaire, des lampes. Tino veut à tout prix refaire les plans mauvais, il est très emballé, il est prêt à tout [...] Je voudrais maintenant terminer la comptabilité totale - mais je m’aperçois que ton compte ne figure nulle part. Où est-il ? Que gagnes-tu ? Combien as-tu touché ? [...] Les studios de Monaco ne permettront pas, pour le moment, de faire un film tout entier. Les histoires des trains sont terribles. On peut seulement y faire des décors de secours, louer des costumes et du personnel. Les trains de marchandises où les locomotives seules passent à n’importe quelle heure". - In 1951 Marcel Pagnol moved to Monaco, following an invitation of his admirer and friend Prince Rainier III. 110 x 125 mm. A large, signed vintage colour photograph of the Shah and his consort standing in full length poses on either side of another dignitary. A group of ladies and gentlemen is in the immediate background. Signed by the Shah ("M. R. Pahlavi") and his wife ("Soraya Pahlavi"), each with their name alone in dark fountain pen ink to a light area at the base of the image. Double matted in white and brown with a raised silver coloured border to an overall size of 220 x 235 mm. The photograph is uniformly slightly faded, although the signatures remain bold.
