Gilt block paneled titles on spine top edges tinted blue with gilt embossed edge design stamped into the page block front cover and verso decorated with unique six-color leather inset engravings by Fonta Signed on the half title by the Bazin: "Hommage amical / de l'auteur / Herve Bazin." Presentation copy to his publisher with a four paragraph typewritten A.L.S. by his wife Jacqueline mounted on free endpaper in which she writes about the color leather engravings and their signification to the situation of Arthur the unstable protagonist of the novel."Cuir chagrin noir dont la couleur evoque le triste bilan d'une vie de desequilibre." A novel of youth rebellion and a man's fractured life caught up in the penal system. The novel is semi-autobiographical based on the author's own experience in mental hospitals from 1937-1940 and was made into the film "Head Against the Wall" in 1959. Binding signed in the leather in gilt by Jacques Blanchet. Encased in a custom matching leather and felted slipcase that echoes the curve of the book. A beautiful exquisite production. A versatile performer he went on the perform as Little Oscar for the Oscar Mayer meat company and as Mayor McCheese and The Hamburglar for McDonalds Corp. He also had a walk-on in a "Seinfeld" episode. Maren was the last surviving cast member from the 1939 film. This photograph is boldly signed " Jerry / Maren / Lollipop / Kid " in black ink and undersigned by Marcella Krienzler who was married to Emil Kranzler one of the village Munchkins. William T.'s brother nicknamed "The Ohio Icicle" was a noted Ohio representative 1855-61 and senator 1861-77 1881-97 best remembered for the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1890; he also served as secretary of the treasury 1877-81 and secretary of state 1897-98. ALS 1p 5" X 8" Mansfield OH 1891 July 15. Addressed to Daniel Ryan. Fine. Minor mounting traces on verso. Makes an appointment -- reads in part: "If it is convenient I would like to see you and Judge Nash here some time this week either together or separately as you prefer. I expect to be absent next week most of the time in Cincinnati and the conference I ask for should occur before I leave here. Please confer with Nash and tell me by what train you will come and by what road so that I may have a carriage at the station for you." Daniel J. Ryan 1855-1923 was a Republican politician and secretary of state 1889-92 while "Judge Nash" was Ohio politician state judge and Republican governor 1900-04 George K. Nash 1842-1904. Interesting if cryptic -- a casual social meeting would hardly have warranted such insistence suggesting this was a meeting of some import. Ryan resigned as secretary of state in April 1891 to become Commissioner of the World's Fair for the State of Ohio but may still have been acting secretary of state when Sherman wrote this. An unusual intriguing letter penned the year after the landmark antitrust legislation for which Sherman will always be remembered. unknown
