Lee: A Biography" 1935 "The South to Posterity: An Introduction to the Writing of Confederate History" 1939 3-volume "Lee's Lieutenants: A Study in Command" 1942-44 and 6-volume "George Washington" 1948-54. TNS 1p 8" X 11" Richmond VA 15 December 1934. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. On "The Richmond News Leader" letterhead Freeman simply notes "I have pleasure in attaching my 'book' autograph as requested." Word "book" inserted in ink. He signs with his usual miniscule cursive "D.S. Freeman" in black ink -- then near the blank lower portion of this sheet he signs a second time using the extremely different and quite vertical printed "Douglas Southall Freeman" signature he reserved for signing books -- which also clarifies the confusion experienced by those accustomed to only seeing this upright full signature when encountering the more "normal" rightward-slanting cursive with which Freeman signed his name to letters and anything other than his own books! This most unusual letter is accompanied by an outstanding high quality NOT mass-produced black-and-white 8" X 10" photograph of Freeman -- a formal studio portrait of Freeman in suit and tie in profile facing right his chin resting on his right hand with index finger extended onto cheek. A superb and quite scarce pair. Freeman letters are rarely encountered and this double-signed example is especially interesting. unknown

IRWIN Richard B. 1839 92
Printed Document Signed
This great-great-grandson of Benjamin Franklin served as aide-de-camp to General George B. McClellan and later to General Nathaniel Banks through most of the Civil War; a Wyoming cattle rancher later in life he authored the 1892 "History of the Nineteenth Army Corps" and contributed many articles to "The Battles and Leaders of the Civil War." Printed DS 2pp recto and verso 4" X 7" Washington DC 1861 October 18. Very good. Lightly age toned with faint single vertical fold; left margin likely trimmed. This printed "General Orders No. 30" issued from the Headquarters of the Army of the Potomac concerns "the preparation of soldiers' discharge papers" -- which apparently were often "in a great many instances very defective and imperfect" and required all types of additional red tape. This two-page summary runs through the proper papers any soldier should have to be correctly cashiered. At the close it notes "By Command of Major General McClellan" and is signed in type at lower right by Paymaster General Benjamin F. Larned and Assistant Adjutant General S. Williams -- and is signed in full in rich brown ink at lower left by Irwin above his printed title. An attractive example. unknown

AMECHE Don 1908 93
Partly-printed Typed Document Signed
This amiable American leading man of the late 1930s best known for "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell" appeared in dozens of films well into the 1990s; he became more popular than ever late in life appearing in "Trading Places" 1983 and winning an Oscar for the 1985 film "Cocoon." Pale orange check drawn on the California Bank typed out to "CASH" in the amount of $150.00 and boldly signed in black ink by Ameche. Normal bank perforation cancellations not touching signature. An attractive piece from quite early in Ameche's career -- his film debut had only occurred the previous year. It wasn't until 1939 that his most famous role as Alexander Graham Bell would make him a household name -- and actually make the name "ameche" synonymous with the telephone as in "You're wanted on the ameche!" Accompanied by an 8" X 11" reproduction of an early head-and-shoulders caricature of a smiling young Ameche. unknown

This crooner saxophonist and bandleader was one of the first teen idols in the late 1920s a radio concert and recording sensation who was mobbed by flappers at every turn; in later years he appeared in films and on stage. Partly-printed ADS 1p 8" X 3" New York NY 1935 April 4. Near fine. Pale orange check drawn on the Manufacturers Trust Company filled out in a secretarial hand in a purplish ink to Bushel & Gottlieb in the amount of $833.33 and boldly signed by him. Interestingly this check appears to be payment to the attorneys representing him in his highly-publicized divorce from his second wife starlet Fay Webb. They married in 1931 separated in 1933 and amidst charges of violence and adultery on his part were granted a divorce in 1936. Bushel & Gottlieb represented Vallee and managed to get these charges dismissed and Webb's large monthly maintenance expenses reduced to a flat $100 per month. In 1936 she died suddenly at age 27. ROSE John 1820 88 and ROSE Charles Day 1847 1913
Autograph Note Signed / Autograph Letter Signed
Sir John was a Scots-Quebecer politician who held a wide array of influential high-level Canadian positions and later lesser positions in Britain; he was named 1st Baronet Rose in 1872. His son Sir Charles was also a politician but is better known as a competitive yachtsman horse breeder and businessman and was supposedly one of the models for "Toad" of Toad Hall in Kenneth Grahame's classic 1908 children's novel "Wind in the Willows"; he too was named 1st Baronet in 1909. ANS from John Rose 1p lettersheet 4" X 6" Guildford England 1882 September 16. Addressed to New York banker John Barker. Very good. On imprinted "Loseley Park / Guildford" letterhead Sir John "sends you with much pleasure a copy of the only Photograph of myself which I have: I wish it had been better." Boldly penned in brown ink. ALS from Charles Day Rose 2pp lettersheet 4" X 6" London England 1895 October 26. Likewise addressed to banker John Barker. Good only. While attractive this letter was somehow sliced horizontally in half though neatly discreetly and archivally reunited. Sir Charles thanks his banker "for the trouble you have taken in executing my small commissions" but more importantly remarks: "You will see that I have decided to withdraw my challenge for the Cup in view of the strong feeling that exists amongst the public and my own friends especially including Lord Dunraven who feels that it is likely to be construed as an act of hostility against himself." Lord Dunraven Windham Wyndham-Quin 1841-1926 was owner and co-owner of the 1893 and 1895 America's Cup-winning yachts so apparently took umbrage at his friend's temptation to enter that famed competition. Despite slice quite nice in appearance with his imprinted "Bartholomew Lane E.C." address. unknown

Norris's crossouts additions and deletions are neatly penned throughout in blue which makes fascinating reading as you observe the authorial and editorial processes at work. On the lower margin she adds "Taken at random from a manuscript -- / by / Kathleen Norris" in her handsome miniscule script. Although the title of the novel from which this was taken is not noted the subject matter of this page -- a woman named Lydia thinking about death -- the 1917 novel "Martie the Unconquered" seems most likely. From the collection of Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject and accompanied by Johannsen's original 8" X 10" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. BEAMAN 1840-1900 New York attorney appointed in 1870 the first-ever Solicitor General of the United States to adjudicate loss claims caused by Confederate raider ships in the Civil War; JOHN E. KUNHARDT SR. 1826-; JOSEPH LAROCQUE 1831-1908 New York Attorney president of the New York City Bar Association 1884-85; WILLIAM B. HORNBLOWER 1851-1914 New York jurist nominated by President Grover Cleveland for the U.S. Supreme Court but rejected by Senate. Why these eleven particular legal luminaries signed this sheet is unknown since it's been separated from whatever document it was once a part of -- but it's intriguing to note that in 1897 a nonpartisan political party called the Citizens Union was formed in New York its goal to promote good government and fight the growing influence of political machines such as Tammany Hall. All eleven were members at its founding half of them serving on the executive and other committees. Chances that the document was produced in connection with this watchdog organization are good. An interesting unusual scarce assemblage. unknown

MAULDIN Bill 1921 2003
Typed Letter Signed / Unsigned Print
This two-time Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist created the immortal Willie and Joe during World War Two; his 1963 "Grieving Lincoln" cartoon in the "Chicago Sun-Times" summed up the nation's reaction to JFK's assassination. TLS 1p 7" X 10" Santa Fe NM 1986 April 14. Addressed to "Ralph" Ralph G. Newman 1912-2000 founder of Chicago's famed Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Near fine. On his imprinted stationery Mauldin complains at length and in detail about the treatment he received from the Library of Congress about a quantity of "my stuff" they had on deposit. In part: "The other day a freight truck arrived with two metal boxes plus two cardboard boxes plus a huge filing cabinet. Contained therein was a general jumble of stuff: old letters old drawings and God knows what. And I do mean jumble. I think the filing cabinet must have made the trip standing on its head. I had asked the people at the Library. to have the metal boxes banded. They were lackadaisically taped with single strands of fiber tape about 3/4" wide. The cardboard boxes had been taped in the same manner by somebody who clearly knew nothing of security and were in unbelievable condition. Whole corners were ripped out big enough to have leaked half the contents. We will never know if there is a paper trail from here to Washington or Maryland or wherever the hell it came from." Boldly signed in blue ballpoint. Mauldin is quite scarce in content letters -- and Newman the Lincoln expert acted of all people as Mauldin's literary agent. Mauldin sent fewer and fewer letters after World War Two and especially later in life grew increasingly isolated corresponding with very few people -- hence the extreme scarcity of his letters. Accompanied by an unusual Mauldin-Newman joint venture: a heavy stock 11" X 14" print of the cartoonist's famed "Grieving Lincoln" editorial cartoon pristine and housed in its original white presentation envelope captioned "A Keepsake by Bill Mauldin from the Abraham Lincoln Association 12 February 1989". A superb pair. Mauldin was very protective of reprint rights to his work and only because of his close personal connection to Newman did he allow this moving drawing to be reproduced. unknown
