‎BROWN Edward Scott "Ted" 1876 1942‎

‎Signature‎

‎This American cartoonist supposedly created more than 24 comic strips including "The Inventor" which ran from 1904 to 1914 and assisted with four others; one cartooning historian describes him as "an absolute whirling dervish at the drawing board producing more material for the daily pages than anyone except the great George Frink'; he worked for the "Chicago Daily News" ca. 1908-24 and the "New York Herald-Tribune" 1925-42. On a heavy stock 5" X 3" card the cartoonist pens "Sincerely yours" and signs in cursive adding his cartoonist's printed stylized "T. Brown" alongside. Very good. Faintly age toned with mounting traces on verso. Along the bottom edge is typed "Cartoonist 'Chicago Daily News'. / April 29 1922." Very uncommon. unknown‎

‎BYNNER Witter 1881 1968‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎This American poet published his first collection "An Ode to Harvard and Other Poems" in 1907 acting as editor at "McClure's Magazine" briefly and taking part in the famed Spectra literary hoax in 1916; in 1922 he relocated to Santa Fe and became a mainstay of the rich literary scene there publishing poetry collections until 1960. ANS 1p 5" X 7 3/4" New York NY 1917 September 26. Addressed to Ms. Stearne. Good plus. Inoffensive mounting traces on verso cause tiny " paper loss at upper right; several small paper losses along original vertical center fold not affecting text. On pale grey pictorial letterhead of Hotel St. Francis in San Francisco the poet pens a brief cryptic but cordial note in thick black ink: "A long while after and in a rattling hurry -- but with appreciative thanks and good wishes!" and signs nicely beneath. An attractive example despite noted flaws. unknown‎

‎FAULKNER Georgene 1873 1958‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎"The Story Lady" was a famed American children's book author whose many works include "Old Russian Tales" 1913 "The Story Lady's Book" 1921 "Tales of Many Folk" 1926. "Story Lady's Christmas Stories" 1927 and many others; their popularity earned her regular storytelling programs on popular Chicago radio stations. ANS 2pp heavy stock linen 5" X 3" correspondence card Chicago IL n.y. likely March 1922. Addressed to George. Very good. Two tiny inoffensive mounting traces at left margin not affecting text. Bearing the green printed name/address of "The Faulkner School" a state-of-the-art school for girls founded by her sister in 1909 and where Georgene taught kindergarten Faulkner boldly pens in her large attractive script a note thanking a correspondent for "the honor of being one in your collection of autographs. I have done so little I do not merit having my name in any way in the 'Halls of Fame'." She also transmits not present "one also by McEvoy who does the 'Potters' -- He would give you one I am sure but you might like this also." Writer J.P. McEvoy was Faulkner's editor at P.F. Volland Company her Chicago publisher and the author of the 1922 hit play "The Potters." Faulkner's first editions are quite collectible and her autograph material seldom seen. This example was no doubt occasioned by the debut of her radio program "The Story Lady" on WGN radio. unknown‎

‎CROKER J. Wilson 1780 1857‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎This Irish-born British literary critic essayist and satirist is remembered for his controversial 1831 edition of Boswell's "Life of Johnson"; as Member of Parliament and long-time secretary to the admiralty 1810-30 he is best known for slashing the size of the Royal Navy. ALS 4pp lettersheet 4" X 7" Aldeburgh Great Britain 1831 October 2. Addressed to George Lamb 1784-1834 British politician and writer; appointed under-secretary of state in 1830. Very good. Mild wear; being a four-page lettersheet there's remnants of old archival tape along the fold. Croker comments on Lamb for answering his letter to British secretary of state The Viscount Melbourne -- George Lamb's own brother William Lamb. Regards some cryptic naval incident -- in part: "I think it proper to observe that you do not appear to have seen the difficulty which I intended to submit to Lord Melbourne. My doubt did not apply so much to the treatment of the seamen who might be stranded as to that of the town into which such persons may have been thrown" and he goes on at length to explain that the whole town may have been subjected to the stranded seamen. Good content from the tail end of Croker's admiralty career and the beginning of his literary career. unknown‎

‎What Bill Mauldin and "Willie and Joe" were to World War Two G.I.s "Wally" Wallgren and his "Helpful Hints" cartoons in "Stars and Stripes" were to World War One doughboys for both poked fun and army life army chores army regulations and the drudgery of military life; Wallgren served with the 5th Marines in the First Division in France after the war collecting his cartoons into the popular "Wally: His Cartoons of the A.E.F." in 1919; later he cartooned for "American Legion Magazine" and then had another strip called "Hoosegow Herman." Original cartoon in black ink signed simply "W" at lower right heavy stock 7" X 3" sheet n.p. n.y. Wallgren's Drexel Hill Pennsylvania home address lightly inkstamped on verso. Near fine. Charming scene -- perhaps a "Helpful Hunts" installment -- depicting two soldiers side by side at a table the G.I. at left showing the G.I. at right how to open a bottle of French wine. "See!!" he says as he thumps the underside of the bottle and the cork strikes with a "Pop" in his friend's eye. Cream 8" X 6" mat with 5" X 2" opening. Wallgren's early work is surprisingly scarce and this is a delightful example. unknown‎

‎WOOLSON Constance Fenimore 1840 95‎

‎Autograph Note Signed / Autograph Manuscript Signed‎

‎Her first novel "Anne" put this American short story writer poet and novelist on the literary map in 1880; a grandniece of James Fenimore Cooper Woolson is remembered today as a pioneering regional writer and much critical and scholarly attention has been paid to her work and her feminist views. ANS 1p 5" X 8" Engelberg Switzerland 9 August 1881. Addressed to "Madame." Near fine. Woolson here sounds rather shocked and embarrassed at the acclaim of her novel as she here notes "you must appreciate that it seems to the writer herself rather brazen-faced to copy some of her own sentences and attach her name as though it was of importance! -- I am glad you like the story. The opening scenes are not far from your home -- the island of MacKinac." Boldly penned and signed in black ink. Accompanied by the aforementioned "sentences" an AMS 1p 5" X 8" n.p. signed in full by her at the close and dated August 1881. Very good. Bit of show-through from mounting traces down leftmost 1" edge. Woolson writes out a paragraph from "Anne" opening with "Rast was in high spiritsl the brilliant world seemed opening before him" and closing with "the poverty-stricken poets who in their poor old boats with ragged canvas and some small ballast of guitars and lutes sail by eating their crusts and laughing at them." Most unusual and attractive -- a choice scarce example from the height of her fame. unknown‎

‎WHITSON John H. 1954 1936‎

‎Typed Manuscript Signed‎

‎This Hoosier attorney turned writer cranked out potboilers -- dime novels also known as "penny dreadfuls" -- under a variety of pseudonyms for a variety of publishers in the late 19th century whereupon he became a minister and teacher and continued to pen young adult and mainstream fiction such as "Barbara a Woman of the West" 1903 "The Rainbow Chasers" 1904 and other novels. TMS 1p 8" X 11" Nashville TN 25 March 1923. Very good. Faint edgewear and age toning. A bold and handsome typescript prepared by Whitson of his four-stanza poem "At the Call of the Whistle." This sentimental but sensitive ode to the coming of Spring contrasts new life with the pain of young death: "All things I'd give dear child if you could watch this Spring's returning! / But hark! e'en as I'm wishing it the whistle calls for you." It closes on a surprisingly morbid melancholy note: ""So with the Spring we may not walk. Dear heart 'tis useless grieving; / The stony world cares not at all and the dear Lord is so far." Whitson crosses out and changes two words in the text "silver" becomes "bridal" and "must" becomes "will" and at the close he signs in full adding "Ward-Belmont" city and date as well. Whitson taught at the Ward-Belmont school for girls a tony finishing school from 1920 to 1923. Whitson published many poems in many publications but it's quite uncommon to find anything in his hand. unknown‎

‎MIKULEC Joseph F. 1878 ?‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎The original "Globe Trotter" this Croatian began a walking tour in 1901 that supposedly lasted 28 years twice circumnavigating the world and logging more than 175000 miles on foot; he survived by selling picture postcards of himself and lugged with him a large book which he got signed from notable figures from all walks of life from all over the world including three U.S. presidents he claimed it contained 50000 signatures -- a book that eventually tipped the scales at 58 pounds and became too heavy for him to carry with him and had to be shipped to his next destination -- a book that he tried to sell to famed rare book dealer Dr. Rosenbach in the 1920s for $10000 he declined and whose whereabouts today is unknown; he married in the 1910s and apparently settled down somewhere in the U.S. perhaps Chicago. ALS 1p 8" X 10" Seattle WA 22 July 1922. Addressed to James Van Allen Shields 1871-1954 an American businessman and patent lawyer based with the Columbia Gramophone Company in Britain. Very good. Faint age toning and edgewear. On lined paper and in his large childish cursive in vivid purple ink Mikulec notes that "I am still enroute collecting signatures and intend to go to Japan from here. Some day I shall come to London again." Below his huge signature he adds "Globe Trotter." Unusual oddity from this eccentric figure. unknown‎

‎American author of girls tales and poems whose first book was published in 1859 "Mother Goose for Grown Folks" and last book in 1900 "The Integreity of Christian Science". AQS 1p 7" X 9" n.p. n.y. Very good. Faint vertical show-through along leftmost 1" from mounting traces on verso with " paper loss near upper left corner not affecting text. On lined paper running vertically strangely Whitney boldly pens her three-stanza poem "A Violet" first published in her 1872 poetry collection "Pansies" and signs in full at the conclusion. Opens with "God does not send us strange flowers every year. / When the spring winds blow o'er the pleasant places / The same dear things lift up the same fair faces. / The violet is here." TLS 1p 5" X 8" Iowa City IA 4 December 1956. Addressed to Ralph G. Newman 1912-98 founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop. Near fine. Friendly meaty single-space letter filled with memorable phrases. Of his schedule he remarks: "I have been off lecturing in St. Louis to 1500 teachers of English with the girls up to their accents in orchids the University of Minnesota with the blonde girls looking as if they wore sunlight on their heads instead of hair and a Catholic girl's school with the girls showing the exhilarating effects of a steady diet of prayer and prunes." On the possibility of visiting Newman in Chicago he mentions "taking a train to Houghton Michigan to lecture to the College of Mining there to rub the noses of the students of engineering in poetry while they rub my nose in the snow." He even works in creative writing as when he notes "It was fine to have you all in Iowa City and especially pleasant to feel that all of you were interested in this university's devotion to the creative act which is of course the beginning of all books." ‎FORSYTH William 1812 99‎

ALS 3pp lettersheet 4" X 7" n.p. 7 May 1874. Addressed to Dr. Tristram. Very good. Writing on stationery bearing an oval blind-embossed "House of Commons" imprint in his bold sloppy but legible hand the newly-elected m.p. writes a constituent about a touchy church issue: "I would willingly help you if I could for I think it would be very lamentable to have the peace of the Congregation disturbed by the introduction of Ritualistic preachers. But I feel sure that any interference on my part with the patronage of the Prime Minister would be looked on by him as rather an impertinence & would do more harm than good. Would it not be well to bring on the part of influential members of the Congregation the facts mentioned in your letter under his notice This seems to me the best plan you can adopt for preventing the appointment of a Clergyman whose views would be distressful of the majority." ALS 2pp lettersheet 4" X 6" Lenox MA 31 October n.y. Addressed to Mr. Riis likely Jacob A. Riis 1849-1914 pioneering Danish-American muckraking journalist and social reformer.Very good. Intriguing content concerning Sloane's do-goodism: "I have decided to act upon your suggestion and entrust the monthly delivery of the aged couple's Rent to a member of the A.B.C. I doubt if I will be able to go myself but I am sure one of the men will be very happy to visit the old people in their home. I agree with you in thinking that it is more blessed to give than to receive." Boldly penned on "Elm Court / Lenox" letterhead the famous shingle-style home her parents had built around 1885. One of Riis' well-known tenement photographs depicts two elderly sisters seated in their New York apartment the caption usually noting that in 1895 Riis persuaded Emily Vanderbilt Sloane to pension these two elderly sisters named Gribbon. This outstanding letter is without doubt written to Jacob Riis -- and chances are strong it pertains to this same or some similar charitable act that he convinced Sloane to underwrite. unknown‎

TLS 1p 7" X 9" Liverpool England 7 November 1908. Addressed to Reverend Oliver Huckel 1864-1940 American Congregationalist clergyman and author. Very good. Faint original folds; mounting traces on verso. On University of Liverpool letterhead Dale discusses some cryptic but clearly delicate issue regarding his and Huckel's mutual friend the noted Scottish theologian P.T. Forsyth 1848-1921. In part ".the Council and Educational Board of Mansfield College. came to no final decision so your judgment will still be in time to help us. I fully appreciate all that you say of Forsyth who is a close friend of mine and was a neighbour for many years; but we cannot run the risk of moving a man of his age to Oxford to begin new work under totally new conditions. ‎BIGELOW John 1817 1911‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎This editor and co-owner of the "New York Evening Post" was an attorney and statesman appointed American Consul in Paris in 1861 where he was hugely influential in preventing France and the United Kingdom from aiding the Confederacy in the American Civil War which no doubt played a role in his appointment as United States Ministers Plenipotentiary to France in 1865; in New York he helped Samuel J. Tilden in his corruption fight against "Boss" Tweed and acted as his campaign manager in his failed 1876 presidential bid. ALS 4pp lettersheet 5" X 8" Paris France n.y. Addressed to "My dear friend." Very good. Faintly age toned. On "Legation des Etats Unis" letterhead Bigelow apparently acknowledges congratulations on his 1865 appointment as United States Minister Plenipotentiary to France thereby dating this undated letter to late 1864 or early 1865: "I am deeply sensible of the kindness of heart which prompted your flattering note. and beg you will accept my thanks. It now remains to be determined whether it will be me or the country that you will congratulate when I resign the honor which has been so unexpectedly thrust upon me. Events and the tendencies of things at home will render my position if not less laborious less disagreeable and irksome and wearing to the temper than it was to my lamented predecessor." Minister William L. Dayton died in office on December 1 1864 -- and Bigelow held the office only until 1866. Goes on to invite this friend to visit Paris and discuss the friend's ailing father: "I thought he erred in accepting the charge of a Congregation when he went home. If he would come abroad and travel through Switzerland on foot with knapsack on his back he may renew his youth & health but if he stays in N.Y. talks politics & fights Every bodies battles but his own he will not grow better in health." Intriguing: REALLY makes one want to determine who received this letter and who this seemingly well-known father was. A superb meaty letter. unknown‎

TLS 1p 8" X 11" Scarsdale NY 11 August 1940. Addressed to Arnold F. Gates 1914-93 noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar. Near fine. Faintly age toned. On letterhead of the just-formed but short-lived "Cook Arctic Club Inc." that lists the just-deceased explorer as honorary president at the top of its list of officers Shainwald writes a supporter just a week after his hero's death. Superb content: "It is a real pleasure to hear from a man who feels as we do and who can express himself so masterly. This club was formed to promote all the interests of Dr. Cook. We shall continue what we have been planning for the past two months. Namely an airplane Expedition to revisit the Northern lands discovered by Cook in 1908: Bradley Land 300 miles from Pole; and the Glacial Islands 120 miles from Pole. Peary has always claimed that Cook turned South 520 miles from Pole. We have failed this year to raise the needed funds but hope to succeed in 1941.
