Freundschaftlicher Brief an einen nicht genannten Adressaten. - Anfangs als Artillerieoffizier an den Feldzügen am Rhein, in den Niederlanden sowie in Bayern teilnehmend, wurde Dietrichstein 1798 Adjutant General Macks bei der neapolitanischen Armee und geriet mit dieser auf der Rückreise nach Österreich in französische Gefangenschaft (bis 1800). Nachdem er den Dienst quittiert hatte, um sich der Förderung von Kunst und Wissenschaft zu widmen, wußte er sein Haus als einen der geistigen Mittelpunkte Wiens zu gestalten, wo u. a. Beethoven und Heinrich Joseph von Collin verkehrten. 1815-31 übertrug ihm der Kaiser die Erziehung des Herzogs von Reichstadt. Daneben wirkte er seit 1819 als Hofmusikgraf, komponierte auch selbst, übernahm 1821-26 die Hoftheaterdirektion und führte eine Reihe von Verwaltungsreformen durch. Dietrichstein war darüber hinaus Präfekt der Hofbibliothek, Oberleiter des Münz- und Antikenkabinetts sowie als Oberstkämmerer Ferdinands I. und zugleich Intendant des Hofburgtheaters, das er bis 1848 leitete. - Beiliegend ein lithogr. Dobretsberger, Josef, Wirtschaftswissenschaftler, Politiker und Publizist (1903-1970).

Ihr ergebener Dobretsberger". - Josef Dobretsberger habilitierte sich nach rechts- und staatswissenschaftlichen Studien in Wien, die er 1926 mit der Promotion abschloß, für Volkswirtschaft. Seit 1930 lehrte er als a.o.Prof., von 1934 an als o.Prof. an der Universität Graz. 1934/35 gehörte er dem Generalrat der Österreichischen Nationalbank an. Im Oktober 1935 berief ihn Schuschnigg als Sozialminister in sein Kabinett; Dobretsberger legte dieses Amt jedoch im Mai 1936 nieder. 1938 von den Nationalsozialisten entlassen, emigrierte er über Jugoslawien und die Schweiz nach Istanbul und lehrte dort als Professor, bis er 1941 nach Jerusalem ging. 1942 siedelte er als Professor der Giza-Universität nach Kairo über und übernahm dort die Leitung der österr. Abteilung des britischen Intelligence Departments. 1946 nach Graz zurückgekehrt, wurde Dobretsberger Professor und Rektor (1946/47) der Universität. Er war Bundesobmann der Demokratischen Union (1948-57), die sich 1953 mit der KPÖ und Linkssozialisten zur Wahl- und Arbeitsgemeinschaft "Volksopposition" zusammenschloß. 1963 rief Dobretsberger die Zeitschrift "Der österreichische Standpunkt" ins Leben. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Originally enclosed was "the solemn response of our faculty of theology" to a question that Villeneuve had submitted to Donnet: "J'ai été bien peiné en rentrant aujourd'hui à Bordeaux d'avoir manqué hier votre visite. Je vous aurais conjuré d'accepter ma modeste hospitalité. Nous avions rappelé nos vieux souvenirs de terre et de mer. To the journalist and member of the Académie de Marseille, Charles Vincens, responding to a letter that had informed her of the unexpected death of the botanist and secretary of the Académie de Marseille, Ludovic Legré (1838-1904) and offering her condolences to the members of the academy: "J'ai reçu avec un vrai chagrin la triste nouvelle apportée par votre lettre. Comme vous, j'étais loin de m'attendre un malheur qui frappe si péniblement votre compagnie en même temps que toutes les personnes qui auraient pu apprécier les grandes qualités de Mr. Legré si utiles à l'œuvre dont il s'occupait avec autant d'intelligence que de zèle. - Dans les rapports que j'ai eus avec lui j'avais pu me rendre compte de tout ce qu'il ferait d'utile et projetait de faire encore ; et tous mes regrets, dont je vous prie de faire part à vos collègues, se joignent à ceux que vous lui donnez [...]". - Adolphe Thiers, who was originally from Marseille, and Félicie Dosne were closely connected to the Académie de Marseille. As the sole heir to her sister and her brother-in-law, Félicie Dosne donated Adolphe Thier's old hôtel particulier in Marseille to the Académie that still owns the building. Als Kustos, zuletzt auch als Vizedirektor am Museum für Kunst und Industrie in Wien tätig, machte er sich vor allem um die wissenschaftliche und museale Bearbeitung der von ihm begründeten Textilsammlung verdient. 1901 sich in Wien habilitierend, wurde Dreger 1917 Ordinarius für Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Innsbruck, später auch an der TH Wien.

To an unnamed doctor, expressing his joy about the law of 12 July 1875 for the liberalization of higher education while minimizing his own role in the political process and emphasizing the important work ahead: "Vous me parlez avec beaucoup trop de bienveillance de la part qu'il m'a été donné de prendre à toute cette discussion ; mais je n'en suis que plus touché et reconnaissant de tout ce que vous avez la bonté de me dire. Le fait est qu'une loi d'enseignement supérieur était bien nécessaire, soit pour relever chez nous cet enseignement, soit pour opposer aux doctrines que j'ai dénoncées, un enseignement sain et pur. - La majorité dans l'assemblée a dépassé même ce que j'aurais osé espérer. Il y a maintenant à tirer parti de cette loi. De grands efforts seront nécessaire pour fonder l'enseignement dont nous avons conquis le droit. A receipt for the Imperial Court's Disbursements Bureau: confirms having received her monthly apanage of 8333 guilders and 20 kreuzers (her allowance for November 1855 out of a guaranteed yearly "Spenadelgeld" of 100,000 guilders). These funds, essentially the Empress's allowance for all her private expenditures, had formed an explicit part of the marriage contract. This is a particularly early example, signed but one and a half years after her wedding with Emperor Franz Joseph. - Folded; archival notes. Very rare: the records of the Court's Disbursements Bureau were discarded in 1923.

The term "eonism" denoting the tendency to adopt the costume and manners of the opposite sex, is derived from his name. Despite d'Éon's wearing a dragoon's uniform all the time, there were rumors that he was actually a woman, and a betting pool was started on the London Stock Exchange about his true sex. D'Éon finally claimed to be physically not a man, but a woman, and demanded recognition by the government as such. King Louis XVI and his court complied, but demanded that d'Éon dress appropriately and wear women's clothing. D'Éon agreed, especially when the king granted him funds for a new wardrobe. Overall, Charles d’Éon spent his first 49 years as a man, and his last 33 years as a woman. Upon death, a council of physicians discovered that d'Éon's body was anatomically male.

2p½ In-8 (35 lignes environ). Il écrit à Alfred de Foville car il a appris avec plaisir qu'il était resté au cabinet du ministère des finances. Foville est entré au ministère en 1873 et était auditeur au Conseil d'Etat précédemment, dont faisait partie Parieu en 1870. Il rappelle les rapports qu'il a eu avec M de Goulard (Eugène de Goulard, ministre des finances en 1872) et recommande à Foville M Guilhaud, si Foville peut faire quelque-chose pour lui. Il s'agit probablement de Léonce Guilhaud de Lavergne, qui finit par être élu sénateur inamovible en 1875 et qui était économiste, tout comme Foville. - Ancienne collection de Foville.

To the bailo (bailiff) Portocarrero in Palermo, discussing the delicate matter of arresting a Tunesian pirate in Messina, and the advice of Simon Pilarino (d. 1733), Austria's capable consul in Tunis: "Illustrissimo, et eccellentissimo signore mio osservantissimo. Accuso la ricevuta dal foglio comp.mo di Vostra Eccellenza in data delli 19 scaduto con la copia di lettera statale scritta da Tunisi dal Console Pilarino circa il far' arrestare un corsaro Tunesino à titolo di represaglia, il quale si trova in Messina, et è si vero, che cose simili sono delicate, suà commettendo quei Barbari molti accessi, e quando non siano per attenersene, ben si potrebbero usare repressaglie, come in effetto esso Console Pilarino non è fuori di ragione; tuttavia però si scriverà fratanto nuovamente al Residente Console in Constantinopoli di farne l' ulteriore rappresentanza, affinche la Porta vi dia l'opportuna providenza. The Tunesian corsairs were pirates and privateers who operated from the North African "Barbary Coast", in particular the ports of Algiers, Tunis, and Tripoli. In addition to seizing ships, they engaged in raids on European coastal towns and villages, mainly in Italy, France, Spain, and Portugal, capturing Christian slaves for the Ottoman slave trade as well as the general Arabic market in North Africa and the Middle East. Following the Treaty of Passarowitz, Emperor Charles VI had in 1725 entered into a Treaty of Peace and Navigation with Tunis: captured ships and their enslaved crew were to be released; navigation and use of ports was to be unrestricted for all Imperial subjects. The present communication is part of the larger context of an affair that would trouble Tunesian-Imperial relations for years to come: earlier that year, the corsairs had captured a Venetian ship (not protected by the 1725 treaty) which, however, foundered near Catania in a storm. Although the Tunesian crew were equipped with passports issued by the Imperial consul, the Sicilians stole their prize and arrested the Muslims, whom they subsequently sold as slaves - a breach of international law which, outrageously, found approval with the maritime court of Messina. To avert massive retribution by an immediate all-out corsair raid on Sicilian and Neapolitan ships and ports, Pilarino had to bribe his way to an audience with Hussein Bey and arrange a Tunesian mission to Vienna, where an envoy might formally put forth the Bey's complaints - a visit which eventually took place in 1732/33. Fersen, Axel count, Swedish count and officer (1755-1810).

8vo. ¾ p. Notes in Swedish recording the trial and execution of several persons between October 15 and November 10, 1793. The first of these is his beloved Marie Antoinette. - Hans Axel count Fersen had fought on the French side in the American Revolution; after his return to France in 1783 he had been made commander of the Royal Swedish Regiment in the French Army by Louis XVI. In the years from 1789 onwards, Fersen, long an ardent devotee of the Queen, soon became Marie Antoinette's sole remaining close friend, acting as a liaison between the royal couple and the Swedish monarch. When Louis and Marie Antoinette finally decided to flee with their children in June 1791, it was Fersen to whom they turned for help. He lent the King the necessary funds, obtained the coach and assisted in engineering the flight which so disastrously ended with the royal family's arrest in Varennes. The King and Queen were returned to Paris, and Marie Antoinette began a clandestine, dangerous correspondence with Fersen, who had escaped to Belgium. While there is no question that Fersen deeply loved Marie Antoinette (he probably became aware of a passionate side to his admiration only in 1790) and that his feelings were increasingly returned by the imprisoned Queen, popular tradition has styled Fersen as Marie Antoinette's long-time secret paramour - a myth debunked by Vincent Cronin in his biography of "Louis and Antoinette" (the single source for this story is an account in the highly biased and unreliable memoirs of the former minister Saint-Priest, whose own wife had indeed been Fersen's mistress for a while). However, Antoinette's loyal friend Fersen secretly returned to Paris in 1792 and spent the night in the Queen's prison-like apartment in the Tuileries, and several pieces of evidence suggest that the liaison, which had been forestalled by the events of 1791, was consummated on that night of 13 February 1792. After again escaping from France, Fersen continued to fight for Marie Antoinette's release - unsuccessfully. Fersen mourned her deeply. "The Queen's face, he wrote in his diary, 'follows me wherever I go. Her suffering and death and all my feelings never leave me for a moment. I can think of nothing else [...]'" (Cronin 392). He would never marry, but "lived quietly with his sister, remembering the past. He wished that he had accompanied the King and Queen on their flight and had been killed making possible their escape. The anniversaries of their deaths he remembered devotedly" (Cronin 394f.). - Slight brownstaining, but well-preserved. Emil Fey wurde 1908 Berufsoffizier und nahm als Bataillons- und Regimentskommandant am Ersten Weltkrieg teil. Nach Kriegsende kurz in der Privatwirtschaft tätig, wurde er 1921 Funktionär des österreichischen Offiziersverbandes und war führend am Aufbau der paramilitärischen Wiener Heimwehr beteiligt, die er 1930 politisch an die Christsoziale Partei anschloß. 1932 wurde er Staatssekretär für das Sicherheitswesen in der Regierung Dollfuß und übernahm bis 1935 in mehreren Kabinetten verschiedene Aufgaben. 1935 als Bundesminister für Inneres entlassen, verlor er 1936 mit seinem Ausschluß aus der Heimwehrbewegung seinen politischen Einfluß.

(mit eh. Widmung und Portraitphotographie) 220 Eintragungen von Mitarbeitern des Hauses. Eine karikierende Federzeichnung zeigt den im Lehnstuhl ruhenden und sich im Lichte seiner Meriten sonnenden Jubilar.

Fontane, Marius, French journalist and historian, secretary of Ferdinand de Lesseps (1838-1914).

Interesting letter to an unnamed recipient, congratulating him on a book that was devoted to members of an institution that Fontane was part of, possibly the Académie de Marseille. Fontane reminisces about the poet Paul Reynier (1832-1856) who had "initiated him to the charms of writing" and was also his predecessor as secretary to Ferdinand de Lesseps. Fontane alludes to the Panama Canal Scandal that was just about to unfold, asserting: "From this point of view, maybe he did right to die early, because he didn't have my robust philosophy and the injustice would have made him cry" (transl.). He also mentions that he assisted in the reception of the "excellent Abbé Bayle" and, more recently, that he met the recipient's daughter and her husband. - The Panama Canal Scandal was the biggest corruption scandal and political crisis of the Third Republic, causing the collapse of three successive governments. In a bid to safe the ill-fated and underfunded project that had started construction works in Panama in 1881, Lesseps and his partners sold shares of their company to small investors from 1885 and a last stock issue in 1888, when the bankruptcy of the company was already immanent, was only possible due to the corruption of important politicians. Although the company was effectively bankrupt by 1889 and all works came to a halt, France delayed its liquidation until 1892. Apart from the political earthquake, the scandal led to a large corruption trial against Ferdinand de Lesseps, his son Charles, other managers of the company, and Marius Fontane himself. Another prominent defendant was the engineering contractor Gustave Eiffel who was initially convicted but doesn't seem to have been involved in the corruption scheme and was acquitted in second trial. Ferdinand de Lesseps's jail sentence was later overturned based on a formal defect, while his son served one year. Marius Fontane was ultimately sentenced to two years and a fine. - Well preserved.

Il s'agit probablement d'un livre sur l'Afrique, suite à son voyage dans le sud de l'Afrique. Armandy jouissait à l'époque d'une vraie célébrité populaire. - Autographe peu courant.
