Most unusual oversize IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" St. Charles IL 1960 October 14. Well-known pose showing the pair from the waist up seated and bare chested in front of an enormous reproduction of an old-time wrestling match. Both gaze intently off to the viewer's right. Goelz at left inscribes boldly across his bare chest in blue ballpoint: "to my very best fan / Donald M. Burnell / Loads of luck and best Wishes / from -- / Billy Goelz / Fox Lake Wrestler / Oct. 14 1960 / St. Charles Livestock / Center / St. Charles Ill." Gilbert at right inscribes boldly across his bare chest in red ballpoint: "To Donald M. Burnell / Best regards and great / success in life / Ill always be your friend / Yours in Sports / Johnny Gilbert / Michigan City Heavyweight king / Oct 14 -- 1960 / St. Charles livestock center / St. Charles Illinois." This most unusual item was likely created for some cryptic promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other identifications recto or verso. Original one-of-a-kind black-and-white snapshot of Autry in full cowboy regalia signing an autograph surrounded by a couple of fans. At the bottom in bold black fountain pen he inscribes and signs: "To Donald / With My best / wishes / Gene Autry." The ink skips a bit on the "ld" in "Donald" and the "st" in "best" and one tape stain imposes partly on the "G" in "Gene." Overall still an attractive example on a unique image. Interesting bookish contents reading in part: "I now return with many thanks the books which you have been so kind as to lend me. The following is the list of them which I trust you will find to be correct. The principia of Sir I. Newton translated into English by Motte in two volumes. Robinson's Mechanical Philosophy. Nouvelles experience sur la resistance des fluides. This British nobleman took the family's ancient but decrepit manse and built the magnificent castle known as Alton Towers that stands today; well known as the lay leader of English Catholicism in his day his philanthropic pursuits included constructing a monastery church and schools and earned him the nickname "Good Earl John." Large bold signature in brown ink 2 3/4" X 1 3/4" tipped to 4�" X 7" album leaf n.p. n.y. Very good. Slight age toning. Below this clipped signature is tipped another slip 3" X 2�" on which is penned in minute 19th century script: "The autograph of John Talbot is the Earl of Shrewsbury the great book collector -- it is genuine & I got it from a person who purchased it in a copy of Wordsworth at the Alton Towers Sale of his library" signed "Hahnhaus." This Russian-born society portraitist was working on a watercolor of Franklin D. Roosevelt at Warm Springs Georgia on April 12 1945 when the president touched a shaking hand to his forehead and complained of a terrible headache before slumping back in his chair dead of a massive cerebral hemorrhage at age 63; the unfinished portrait is still displayed at the Warm Springs museum. Signed print of Shoumatoff's portrait of Lyndon B. Johnson 11" X 14" n.p. n.y. Fine. Superb print of this striking half-length watercolor of LBJ in tie and casual coat showing the presidential seal patch gazing intently at the viewer. Pencilled artist's signature at lower right and limitation numbering #43 of 300. Printed signature is dated 1974 which is probably when this signed limited edition print was produced. LBJ died in 1973 -- but whether Shoumatoff painted this portrait from life shortly before his death -- continuing her macabre track record -- we have not ascertained. unknown

Renowned Appalachian poet and short story writer "Highland Annals" 1925 and novelist under pen name "Fielding Burke" best remembered for "Call Home the Heart" 1932 her first and "A Stone Came Rolling" 1935. Signed booklet for her 1947 novel "Sons of the Stranger" 8vo 11pp put out by Longmans Green & Co. presumably in that same year. Very good. Four illustrations. On the pictorial front cover Dargan pens "Greetings from / Olive Tilford Dargan" boldly near the top and on the inside front page crosses out the published price of $4.00 changing the "4" to a "3". Most of the text consists of plot summary followed by a 2-page author biography and reviews of earlier titles. Attractive and unusual. unknown
