‎WATERSTON Anna CL. 1812 99 C. L.‎

‎Signature and Inscription‎

‎The youngest daughter full name Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy Waterston of Boston Mayor and Harvard president Josiah Quincy dabbled in the arts writing poems "Verses" 1863 nonfiction "Adelaide Phillipps: A Record" 1883 and Unitarian hymns; in 2003 her diary was published "A Woman's Wit & Whimsy: The 1833 Diary of Anna Cabot Lodge Quincy" chronicling the life of a 21-year-old aristocrat on the Harvard campus. Bold attractive "With many pleasant memories / of our visit to your happy and / beautiful home I shall / always be your affectionate friend / Anna C.L. Waterston / Fort Washington / 1862" on a 5" X 3" slip. Near fine. It's interesting that Fort Washington 16 miles south of Washington DC was built in June of that year 1863 for the New York State Militia during the Gettysburg Campaign so clearly this must have been penned there in the months immediately following its construction. A handsome unusual war-date item. unknown‎

‎LEAVITT Robert Keith 1895 1967‎

‎Typed Letter Signed / Typed Note Signed / Magazine Dummy‎

‎Paperback. This American writer graduated from Harvard in 1917 and pursued a career as an advertising copywriter and general nonfiction author penning corporate histories as well as his bestselling "Noah's Ark New England Yankees and the Endless Quest" 1947 and "The Chip on Grandma's Shoulder" 1954; a long-time Sherlock Holmes buff he was a co-founder along with Christopher Morley of the famed "Baker Street Irregulars" and author of "The Origins of 221B Worship." TLS and TNS each 1p 8" X 11" Scarsdale NY 1958 June 17 and 1963 January 7. Both addressed to noted Lincoln and Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES 1914-93. Very good. In the earlier letter Leavitt discusses "A friend of mine Stuart Law" who "has for some time been toying with the idea of starting a Civil War magazine. Probably part of the Idea stems from the fact that his press prints a classic motor car fan magazine. He went as far as to get up a dummy of the Civil War periodical as he conceived it in the belief that it should have a considerable popular appeal and a wider-than-you-might-think sale. I attach Mr. Law's dummy." The dummy is present titled "The Blue and the Grey 1861-1865: Short Stories of an Era." 8vo. Stiff blue and grey decorative wrappers. Ca. 100pp. Very good. Handsome and professional original pen-and-ink design on this mock-up covered with thick gauge mylar. Text block consists of printed text swiped from some unknown text just for filler purposes and contains such items as portions of Stephen Vincent Benet's "John Brown's Body" Lloyd Lewis's "Sherman: Fighting Prophet" Burton J. Hendrick's "Statesmen of the Lost Cause" and other Civil War bits. The second Leavitt letter contains Leavitt's resignation from the Civil War Round Table of New York of which Gates was long an officer. "During the last couple of years I have been unable to get to any meetings and it looks as though in the future my activities might become even more restricted." An attractive pair of letters and a one-of-a-kind magazine dummy -- most unusual. paperback‎

ANS 2pp 4" X 2" heavy stock card n.p. 1897 August 20. Near fine. This note to an admirer explains why Fiskes autograph is seldom seen for he explains that "all requests for autographs are thrown into the waste-basket without reaching me. But your letter moved the stony heart of my reader." Accompanied by a fine carte-de-visite portrait backstamp of Warrens Boston of a young Fiske -- itself scarce and desirable. unknown‎

‎KINGSLEY Florence Morse 1859 1937‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed / Autograph Manuscript Signed‎

‎This popular and prolific American novelist often penned such inspirational fiction for young adults as "The Singular Miss Smith" "Transfiguration of Miss Philura" and "The Resurrection of Miss Cynthia." Two items: First an ALS 1p 6" X 7" Staten Island New York Kingsley Avenue no less! 1923 February 27. Addressed to Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 a University of Chicago geology professor who authored "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Fine. Charming note trying to oblige an admirer: "Somewhere in the attic are more respectable 'scraps' of manuscript than the enclosed; but at present I am not able to endure the winter rigors of that repository of 'literary remains.' This is a rejected beginning of the thirteenth chapter of the book I am now writing: 'The Life of Henry Fowle Durant' Founder of Wellesley College. I am sorry I saw fit to crumple it before dropping it into the waste basket." Second the aforementioned Autograph Manuscript Signed 1p 8" X 11" n.p. n.y. Very good. Despite Kingsley's claim of having crumpled it this thin onionskin-type paper bears almost no evidence of having been so abused. Handsomely and closed penned in black fountain pen and bearing a number of crossouts additions and deletions this is a very full page 89 clearly marked chapter "XIII" and opens: "In her singularly lucid and beautiful 'Interpretation of the Genius of Henry Fowle Durant' Anne Eugenia Morgan writes of him thus: 'Henry Fowle Durant came to provide a transition in our human course -- a beautiful curve for a staircase that leads up up into the clearing mysteries of the bow of light the bow of higher truth luminous in our time." Most unusual to find earlier versions of published works such as this. Kingsley's "Life of Henry Fowle Durant" was published the following year in New York by Century Company. This fascinating pair is accompanied by Johannsen's original 8" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎This American educator obtained the first legislative grant for the Illinois Industrial University in 1852 which transformed into the University of Illinois in 1885 -- which institution Peabody served as president 1880-91. ANS in pencil 1p 5" X 3" n.p. n.y. dated on verso 1890 August 25 in another hand. Near fine. Courteous note on the blank verso of a portion of a note written to Peabody by what appears to be an incoming freshman. "When you arrive come to the University" notes Peabody" and inquire of the Business Agent Professor Shattuck who will tell you all about boarding places. If you care to be here by say Friday previous the 12th it will be in ample time to get everything settled." Boldly signed in full. Oh for the days when a university president could personally advise new students! From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. I am not sure whether I acknowledged the receipt of the first remittance of L 800." ‎The handsome leading man is best remembered for television's "The Sheriff of Cochise" 1956-60 retitled "U.S. Marshal" though he also appeared in some Westerns and the 3D horror film "Revenge of the Creature." Stunning glossy IPS heavy stock 16" X 20" Chicago IL 1961 March 18. Near fine. Handsome half-length portrait of this he-man in his sheriff's getup leaning against a saddle and gazing soulfully at the viewer. In the large blank area at upper right he signed and inscribes large and bold in blue ballpoint: "To My Good Friend / Donald M. Burnell -- / Kindest Regards and Lots / of Luck -- / From / John Bromfield / U.S. Marshal / March 18 1961 / Amphitheatre -- Chicago." Ink adhesion begins quite strong though his pen began "spotting" or "dotting" during the last few lines -- still even those lines are easily legible. This incredibly attractive oversize item was likely created for some promotional purpose but it bears no photographer's credit or other markings recto or verso. Choice vintage piece signed just after the show's demise -- the pose is known though it's likely one of a kind in this format. Stunning for display. unknown‎

This striking image was quite likely made from the original glass plate negative as was Meserve's habit.
