‎THOMPSON William 1794 1854‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed‎

‎This English member of Parliament was also elected mayor of London in 1828. ALS 1p 7 3/4" X 10" Whitehall Place London 1831 January 31. Addressed to Edward Church. Very good. Lightly age toned with mild edgewear but overall bold and attractive. Writing to this noted solicitor Thompson declines an invitation: "The important business which will engage the attention of Parliament on the 10th Feby will prevent me having the honor of dining with the friends of the London Dispensary on the occasion of the anniversary meeting." Interesting a blank portion at lower right bears a lightly-pencilled note in the hand of pioneering autograph dealer Charles Hamilton misidentifying this document as being in the hand of a different William Thompson "d. 1833 Irish economist; supported Robt Owen; wrote 'Distribution of Wealth". unknown‎

‎MITCHELL, Herbert (1898-1980)‎

‎Photograph Signed‎

‎This Polish-born American theatrical photographer set up shop on Broadway in New York in the 1920s and in the '30s developed a compelling portraiture style that made him sought after on the East coast. PS heavy stock 5" X 7" n.p. n.y. Near fine. Undated ca. 1935 head and shoulders portrait of a dark-haired young women in typical Mitchell pose -- shoulders at left but facing rightward and head turned to the right. This subject has her hair parted in the middle and pulled tight; she gazes to her right viewer's left with the barest hint of a Mona Lisa smile. In the dark lower left corner Mitchell signs boldly in his usual white ink making for superb contrast. And in the light area at lower right the unidentified subject signs boldly in black grease pencil: "To Eddie / Tamara" also with superb contrast. While we haven't been able to identify the subject she is most likely an actress or perhaps a ballet figure. "Tamara" suggests Russian and Mitchell did photograph a number of Les Ballets Russes ballerinas. A lovely vintage piece signed by a premiere photographer. unknown‎
