Located at an elevation of 900 meters (2,953 ft), Safed is the highest city in the Galilee and in Israel. Safed has been identified with Sepph, a fortified town in the Upper Galilee mentioned in the writings of the Roman Jewish historian Josephus. The Jerusalem Talmud mentions it as one of five elevated spots where fires were lit to announce the New Moon and festivals during the Second Temple period. Safed attained local prominence under the Crusaders, who built a large fortress there in 1168. It was conquered by Saladin 20 years later, and demolished by his grandnephew al-Mu'azzam Isa in 1219. After reverting to the Crusaders in a treaty in 1240, a larger fortress was erected, which was expanded and reinforced in 1268 by the Mamluk sultan Baybars, who developed Safed into a major town and the capital of a new province spanning the Galilee. After a century of general decline, the stability brought by the Ottoman conquest in 1517 ushered in nearly a century of growth and prosperity in Safed, during which time Jewish immigrants from across Europe developed the city into a center for wool and textile production and the mystical Kabbalah movement. It became known as one of the Four Holy Cities of Judaism. As the capital of the Safad Sanjak, it was the main population center of the Galilee, with large Muslim and Jewish communities.".‎

‎MUSTAFA NECATI [UGURAL], (Turkish statesman in the early years of the Turkish Republic, who served as the Minister of National Education during the reform period), (1894-1929).‎

‎Autograph letter signed 'Mustafa Necati' sent to Turkish female poet Halide Nusret Zorlutuna, (1901-1984).‎

‎Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original manuscript autograph letter signed (ALS) addressed to Turkish female poet Halide Nusret Zorlutuna, (1901-1984). 22,5x17,5 cm. In Ottoman script written on a fine and special Italian hand-made paper with 'Aurelius' watermark. 1 p. on bifolium. Dated March 13, 1926. It starts as "Muhterem hemsire...". 4 lines. Signed as 'Maarif müdürü' [i.e. Director of Ministery of Education] by Mustafa Necati. Mustafa Necati Ugural was a Turkish statesman in the early years of the Turkish Republic, who served as the Minister of National Education during the reform period. He died before the Turkish Surname Law was adopted and the surname Ugural is actually the surname his family members adopted after his death. Mustafa Necati was born in 1894 in Izmir. His father was Halit and his mother was Naciye. After his primary and secondary education in Izmir, he went to Istanbul for higher education and studied law. He returned to Izmir in 1914 to serve as a lawyer and teacher. In 1915 he established a private school with his friend Vasif Çinar. He also served as a legal adviser for the local railway company. After the First World War in which the Ottoman Empire was defeated, the Allies fired the railway workers. He tried to defend the workers' rights by establishing a committee. Later he expanded his activities to defend the rights of the reserve officers who returned from the front. After Izmir was occupied by the Greek army, he fled to Istanbul and then to Balikesir, where he began to participate in the Turkish War of Independence. Among other things, he published a short-lived newspaper to defend Turkish rights against the Greek invasion. After the Ottoman parliament in Istanbul was abolished by the Allies on 16 March 1920, Turkish parliament was established in Ankara on 23 April 1920 and Mustafa Necati was elected as the Saruhan (present Manisa) MP. However, during the 1920-1922 term, he spent most of his time out of Ankara. He was appointed as a member of Independence Tribunals in Sivas and then Kastamonu. Finally, he was appointed as the chairman of Amasya Independence Tribunal. As soon as the Republic was proclaimed on 29 September 1923, Mustafa Necati became a government minister of Ismet Inönü's cabinets. His first seat was Minister of Exchange Construction and Settlement in the 1st government of Turkey. This was a very important seat for its main responsibility was the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey. In the 2nd government of Turkey, he was the Minister of Justice. However, his most important seat was that of the Minister of National Education following a revision in the 4th government of Turkey. He kept this post in the 5th government of Turkey till his death. Up to 1928, the Arabic script was used in Turkey. However, the Turkish language has 8 vowels and the Arabic script remained incapable of reproducing the Turkish words. Nevertheless, being the script of the Quran it was considered to be inalterable. But president Atatürk decided to adopt the Latin alphabet (with small changes). Moreover, he insisted that the reform should be carried out immediately. In addition to adding the Latin alphabet to school curricula, short term courses for the adults called Nation's schools (Turkish: Millet Mektebi) were established. As the minister of National Education, Mustafa Necati was responsible for establishing these courses. The courses were successful and Necati was later considered to be one of the pioneers of the new Turkish alphabet. (Wikipedia).‎

‎NEVZAT TANDOGAN, (The fourth mayor and governor of Ankara serving between 1929 and 1946, who committed suicide upon a political scandal he was involved in), (1894-1946).‎

‎Typescript document signed 'Vali Tandogan', sent to "Ankara Konservatuvar Direktörlügü'ne" [i.e. The Directorate Ankara Conservatory], to request a representative for celebration of 'May 19'.‎

‎Very Good Turkish Original TLS by Nevzat Tandogan. Oblong: 16,5x20 cm. In Turkish. 1 p. Punching holes on right side folded traces. Dated 9/V/1939. Six lines. Tandogan was the fourth mayor and governor of Ankara serving between 1929 and 1946. He committed suicide upon a political scandal he was involved in. Abdullah Nevzat Tandogan was born into a wealthy family in 1894 in Istanbul, then Ottoman Empire. His father was from Sarajevo and his mother from Belgrade. He completed his education at Istanbul Law School, today Istanbul University Faculty of Law. After the Surname Law was enacted in Turkey in 1934, he adopted the family name Tandogan. He was married and had two children. During World War I, he served as an intelligence officer in the Ottoman Army in Istanbul. In the later years of the war, he began a career as a school teacher in Istanbul. In 1918, he entered police service. After serving at leading posts in various police departments, he quit. He became Governor of Malatya in 1925 before he entered politics from the Republican People's Party) (CHP) and was elected into the Grand National Assembly as deputy of Konya in the 1927 general election. On November 4, 1929, he resigned from his parliamentary seat to take office as Governor of Ankara. Serving also as the acting city mayor, he was uninterrupted 17 years long in this position. Tandogan was a civil servant and politician of the single-party era (1923-1945). The political philosophy of the era was understood so as "the government has the authority to determine and to do what is useful and best for the country, knowing better than everyone, especially the folk". Tandogan's political attitude is described best with his words he said to a young man as "We constitute Communism in this country if it is necessary". Tandogan had a dissenting opinion to the 1929 Jansen Plan by German architect and urban planner Hermann Jansen(1869-1945). The plan proposed the integration of green belts and areas within the rapid-growing new capital of the newly established Republic for promoting a healthy urban environment. The realization of Ankara's master plan as different from the Jansen Plan is his practice. In 1945, a murder occurred in Ankara, which became known as the "Ankara Murder" (Turkish: Ankara Cinayeti). Tandogan was accused of intentionally and deliberately covering the murder case, in which Hasmet Orbay, the son of the then Chief of the General Staff Kâzim Orbay, was involved. Tandogan was summoned to court to testify after the case was discussed in a question time in the parliament. It was believed that calling a high-ranked civil servant or politician to the witness stand in a court trial was unthinkable during the single-party era before 1945. The next day, on July 9, 1946, Nevzat Tandogan committed suicide by shooting himself at home with a firearm. The main square in Ankara, which hosted many political party rallies and protests, was named in his honor. In 2012, the city council of the metropolitan municipality changed the square's initial name from "Nevzat Tandogan Square" to "Tandogan Square". A public park in Batikent neighborhood of Yenimahalle, Ankara as well as a street in Kavaklidere neighborhood of Çankaya, Ankara is also named after him.‎

A good paper, one page on bifolium. Carol I, born Prince Karl of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, was the first monarch of Romania from 1866 to his death in 1914, ruling as Prince (Domnitor) from 1866 to 1881, and as King from 1881 to 1914. He was elected Prince of the Romanian United Principalities on 20 April 1866 after the overthrow of Alexandru Ioan Cuza by a palace coup d'etat. In May 1877, he proclaimed Romania an independent and sovereign nation. The defeat of the Ottoman Empire (1878) in the Russo-Turkish War secured Romanian independence, and he was proclaimed King on 26 March [O.S. 14 March] 1881. He was the first ruler of the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen dynasty, which ruled the country until the proclamation of a socialist republic in 1947. During his reign, Carol I personally led Romanian troops during the Russo-Turkish War and assumed command of the Russo/Romanian army during the siege of Plevna. The country achieved internationally recognized independence via the Treaty of Berlin, 1878 and acquired Southern Dobruja from Bulgaria in 1913. Domestic political life was organized around the rival Liberal and Conservative parties. During Carol's reign, Romania's industry and infrastructure were much improved, but the country still had an agrarian-focused economy and the situation of the peasantry failed to improve, leading to a major revolt bloodily suppressed by the authorities. He married Princess Elisabeth of Wied in Neuwied on 15 November 1869. They only had one daughter, Maria, who died at the age of three. Carol never produced a male heir, leaving his elder brother Leopold next in line to the throne. In October 1880 Leopold renounced his right of succession in favour of his son William, who in turn surrendered his claim six years later in favour of his younger brother, the future king Ferdinand. (Wikipedia). Mustafa Hasim Pasha, (1852-1920), was one of the Ottoman grand viziers of Georgian origin. He was son of Sheik Al-Islam Ahmed Muhtar, (1807-1882). ‎PERCY SMYTHE STRANGFORD, (8th Viscount - British nobleman and man of letters), (1825-1869).‎

‎Autograph letter signed 'Strangford'.‎

‎Very Good English Original autograph letter signed (ALS) by Percy Smythe Strangford, (1825-1869), about Heinrich Julius Klaproth's manuscript, saying it was translated from a Russian book, "officially confided to him when at Turkestan in 1805 or thereabouts". 18x11,5 cm. In English. 30 lines in 2 p. Letterhead in Persian beneath a coronet, dated 19 November 1868. Heinrich Julius Klaproth, (1783-1835), was a German linguist, historian, ethnographer, author, orientalist, and explorer. As a scholar, he is credited along with Jean-Pierre Abel-Rémusat, with being instrumental in turning East Asian Studies into scientific disciplines with critical methods. Percy Ellen Algernon Frederick William Sydney Smythe, 8th Viscount Strangford, (1825-1869), was a British nobleman and man of letters. He was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, the son of the 6th Viscount Strangford, the British Ambassador, Ottoman Turkey, Sweden, and Portugal. During all his earlier years Percy Smythe was nearly blind, in consequence, it was believed, of his mother having suffered very great hardships on a journey up the Baltic Sea in wintry weather shortly before his birth. His education began at Harrow School, whence he went to Merton College, Oxford. He excelled as a linguist and was nominated by the vice-chancellor of Oxford in 1845 a student-attache at Constantinople. While at Constantinople, where he served under Lord Stratford de Redcliffe, Smythe gained a mastery not only of Turkish and its dialects but of almost every form of modern Greek, from the language of the literati of Athens to the least Hellenized Romaic. He had already a large knowledge both of Persian and Arabic before going east, but until his duties led him to study the past, present, and future of the sultan's empire he had given no attention to the tongues which he well described as those of the international rabble in and around the Balkan peninsula. On succeeding his brother as Viscount Strangford in 1857 he continued to live in Constantinople, immersed in cultural studies. At length, however, he returned to England and wrote a good deal, sometimes in the Saturday Review, sometimes in the Quarterly Review, and much in the Pall Mall Gazette. A rather severe review in the first of these organs of the Egyptian Sepulchres and Syrian Shrines of Emily Anne Beaufort (1826-1887) led to a result not very usual, the marriage of the reviewer and the author. Percy Smythe was president of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1861-64 and 1867-69.‎

Throughout the 1930s when the Building of School Political Sciences constituting the subject of the study was constructed, the International Architectural Style conveyed to Turkey by means of architects coming from Germany-speaking countries had a growing impact in the country. Cahit's first tale was published in the magazine named "Yarim Ay" [i.e. Half Moon] published by Nâzim Hikmet in 1935. Mrs. Cahit, who also wrote poetry before, turned to story and novel writing. In her works, she mostly dealt with women's rights and the place of women in society, and occasionally worked on mystical themes. She's famous for her children's books. Many female writers have adopted male noms-de-plume, or otherwise gender-ambiguous pseudonyms, for a number of reasons: to publish without prejudice in male-dominated circles; to experiment with the freedom of anonymity or to encourage male readership. Cahit Uçuk, in his memoirs about the difficulties of being a woman writer in the world of men, could not keep a secret behind the name that everyone thought belonged to a man, and Bab-i Âlî [i.e. the street in Istanbul where publishers gathered in the Ottoman Empire] soon learned that she was a very beautiful woman.‎

‎Very Good Arabic Original manuscript without binding. 12mo. (16 x 11 cm). In Arabic. [40] p., drawings, and tables. Marginal texts additionally. A linear wormhole on the bottom from beginning to the end, the thread in the spine is broken hence two separate parts. Otherwise a good copy. Rare manuscript compiled from works related to astronomical instruments written by probably Sibtu'l-Mardînî, copied anonymously in the early 19th century on the paper with 'ahar' with four marginal drawings and tables. The copier of this manuscript is not described. An 'Ebced' notes on the last blank page. The manuscript starts with a calendar in the Islamic system which is prepared with red and black inks and annotated info around the table. The first part includes how to use an almucantar, directions on the sphere, location of the stars in the sky. On the last two pages, the author describes the preparation of an almucantar. The second part is titled "Hadhâ risâle-i cenûb tarafi" [i.e. Tractate on the South direction], and the third and last part titled " Hadhâ risâle-i cenûb taraf, Hadha mukharrar latashich al-shaat fî taraf al-cayb min al-rub'u' mu'âl-ihtizâr", includes some 'sinus mathematics' with two impressive tables on the opposite page. Sibt al-Maridini, the full name Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Ghazal (1423-1493), was an Egyptian-born astronomer and mathematician. His father came from Damascus. The word "Sibt al-Maridini" means "the son of Al-Mardini's daughter". His maternal grandfather, Abdullah al-Mardini, was a reputed astronomer of the eighth century AH. He was a disciple of the astronomer Ibn al-Majdi (d. 850/1506). Sibt al-Mardini taught mathematics and astronomy in the Great Mosque of al-Azhar, Cairo. He was also a timekeeper (muwaqqit) of the mosque. He wrote no fewer than fifty treatises in astronomy (sine quadrants, sundials, astronomical tables, and prayer times) and wrote at least twenty-three mathematics textbooks. Al-Sakhawy counted two hundred books that were written by Sibt al-Mardini, on Islamic law, astronomy, and mathematics. Libraries that specialize in ancient manuscripts, all over the world, have transcripts of his works. Sibt al-Mardini's declared that "the opinion of the muezzins (those who call people to prayer) is less correct than that of the legal scholars and it is the latter that should be used as the basis for the determination of prayer time". (Wikipedia). Sib? al-Maridini was a prolific author of astronomical texts, which were still being used and studied into the 19th century. Little is known with certainty about his life. It is thought that he grew up in Damascus, where his maternal grandfather, Abd Allâh ibn Khalîl ibn Yûsuf Jamâl al-Dîn al-Mâridînî (died: 1406), was the muwaqqit (timekeeper) in charge of regulating the daily rituals of the Islamic community) of the Umayyad Mosque. Later he traveled to Cairo, where tradition places him as a student of Ibn al-Majdî. Sib? al-Mâridînî wrote extensively on mathematics and mathematical astronomy. Like his grandfather, he was especially interested in astronomical instruments. The bio-bibliographical sources list some 25 treatises, many of which exist today in multiple copies. According to the historian al-Jabarti (died: 1822), Sib? al-Mâridînî's works on mîqât (ritual timekeeping) and astronomical instruments were still being studied in the curriculum of Cairo's al-Azhar, one of the preeminent educational institutions in the Islamic world, at about the beginning of the 19th century. (Biographical encyclopedia of astronomers, 2007).‎
