The Richthofen Range (aka the Qilian Mountains), a northern outlier of the Kunlun Mountains, forming the border between Qinghai and the Gansu provinces of northern China, were named after him.

Papiergedecktes Siegel Als Präsident des Hofkriegsrats, wenige Monate nach dem Ende des Siebenjährigen Kriegs, an den Ingenieurs-Oberst Johann Wilhelm Hemmeling hinsichtlich Montierungsgeldern für 13 in preußische Kriegsgefangenschaft geratene Sappeurs (oder Pioniere) sowie zu Extra-Unkosten im Sappeurcorps: "Der Röm. Kay. Mayt. Ingenieurs Obristen Herrn Johann Wilhelm Hemeling anzufügen. In folge des unterm 13ten des ausgetrettenen Monaths anhero begleiteten Ansinnens des Sappeurs-Corps Commendanten Herrn Obrist-Lieutenant Bechard geschiehet die Vorkehrung unter einem, daß zwar einer Seiths denen den 10ten October 1762 in die jenseitige Kriegs-Gefangenschaft verfallenen 13 Sappeurs auf die für selbe Preussischer Seiths nicht erfolgte und mithin durch den Ober-Lieutenant Rädel angeschaffte Montirung, vom 11ten October 1762 bis ultima Martii 1763, die Monturs-Gebühr mit betragenden 100 fl. 50 xr. verabfolget, anderer Seiths aber auch nach der allgemeinen Regul aller Empfang in der Gefangenschafft angerechnet werde. Soviel hingegen die von gedachtem Herrn Obrist-Lieutenant untereinstens gebethene Bezahlung deren bey dem Sappeurs Corps vorfallenden extra Unkosten ab aerario betrifft, da kan diesfalls um so weniger von der General-Cynosur abgewichen werden, als ohnedeme die Sappeurs eine größere Löhnung als die übrige Mannschaft zu beziehen haben, welchemnach mithin die zum besten der gantzen Compagnie gereichende Ausgaben auf alle Individua pro rata ihres Gehalts zu repartiren, diejenige Kosten aber, welche nach ihrem Endzweckh nur ein- so anderes Individuum betreffen, von diesen allein zu entgelten seynd. Ausführliches Schreiben in Festungsbauangelegenheiten an Ferdinand Graf von Harrsch (1704-92), Direktor des Genie-Wesens und kommandierender General im Banat und in Böhmen, betreffend die Festungen Temesvar, Peterwardein, Essegg, Brod und Gradisca: "Euer Excellenz an Mich gestelte Berichte vom 20ten, 26ten und 28ten Octobris sind Mir dem 19ten dieses Monats Novembris mit der Ordinari-Post zu gleicher Zeit eingelanget, und sammentliche darinn angezogene Beylagen richtig angefunden worden [...] Nach welcher Meinung könnte folglich zu Temeßwar der Vorgraben, ohne einer neuerlichen Anschüttung, und ohne die Enveloppe in einen bedeckten retrenchirten Weeg, der noch eine weit stärkere Besatzung erheischen würde, zu verändern, bis auf andere Zeiten belaßen; beym neuen Bega-Canal ein Flutt-Bett, um dadurch das Waßer des äußern Grabens von Zeit zu Zeit zu erfrischen, und den Unrath abtreiben zu können, angelegt; und außer deme, die in den Haupt-Gräben vorhandene Figuren, wenn Sie der Defension absolute schädlich zu seyn erachtet werden solten, hinweggeraumet werden; auf gleiche Weiß könnte auch zu Peterwardein der Vorgraben noch dermalen in seinem Weesen verbleiben, und nur die beeden Horn-Werks-Flügl, wie es am thunlichsten scheinen wird, verbeßert werden. Er habe Nachrichten aus dem Lager von Richemont erhalten: Der Graf d'Ayen befinde sich besser, er habe eine gute Nacht gehabt: "Le tems paroit vouloir se remetter au beau, Monsieur, cependant le vent est toujours mal placé. Le terrein est bien gâte. Schrötter von Kristelli, Hans, Austrian painter (1891-1965).
POW correspondence. Siberia, 1916-1919.
Mostly 8vo. 93 cards by Hans Schrötter, 83 cards to Hans Schrötter, and 19 cards by other senders (such as the Red Cross), frequently postmarked. In German. An extensive correspondence between Schrötter, detained at the POW camp Blagoveshchensk in the Amur region and several other camps, and his parents and friends. One of his earliest postcards is written from Repinsk on the Volga: "Arrived safe and sound, waiting for onward transport. Onion-domed churches, shining with gold, steamers on the river. Troikas. In the midst of Tolstoy's country [...]" (15 Aug. 1916). In spite of circumstances, the first Christmas as a prisoner of war appears to have been tolerable ("With a friend I wrote a Christmas puppet show, we wrote a play and staged it on Christmas Eve", 4 Jan. 1917). A month later, he reports: "Working on languages every day and drawing, so time is not wasted, but put to good use. Also, play the guitar" (2 Feb. 1917). The days are monotonous, but not unbearable: "Remain healthy, reading, painting, and waiting. The latter I do with much patience, an art which may be acquired in time […] But how much longer my sojourn here will last, is quite unknown [...]" (to his uncle in Munich, 13 Jan. 1918). Two cards are addressed to Alfred Kliefoth (1889-1969), posted to the American embassy at St Petersburg as a military observer, from whom he requests a shipment of books in German, "if possible light and yet earnest reading" (Romanow-Borisoglepska, 28 Dec. 1916). - After his release, Hans Schrötter von Kristelli worked in Chicago and New York as an art teacher and painter of frescoes; he later moved to Graz, where he created several monumental murals.

[Album amicorum].
Friendship album of Clothilde de la Rochelambert, comtesse de La Bédoyère (1829-1884), with numerous entries by members of the European aristocracy. Fontainebleau, Saint-Cloud, Compiègne, Paris, Nizza, Biarritz, Bad Kissingen, Schwalbach, Baden, 1864-1881.
4to. 34 ff., some written on both sides, irregularly counted, containing more than 250 entries (some pasted in). Red morocco with giltstamped borders and cover stampting inspired by the royal arms of Sardinia. Silk endpapers. All edges gilt. Exceptionally plentiful friendship album owned by Comtesse de La Bédoyère, daughter of the senator Henri de La Rochelambert (1789-1863), wife of Georges Huchet de La Bédoyère (1814-67) and court lady to Empress Eugénie, wife of Napoleon III. Indeed, the first entry in the album belongs to the the emperor himself; this is followed on the same page by Eugénie with a quotation from Sophie d'Arbouville's poem "Je crois": "Je crois au Souvenir, au long regret du cœur, / Regret que l'on bénit comme un dernier bonheur, / Crépuscule d'amour, triste après la lumière / Mais plus brillant encore que le jour de la terre!" This is succeeded by the signature of the couple's only son, the eight-year-old Napoléon Eugène Louis; at the bottom of the page is a four-line German quotation from Schiller, which Napoléon III adds in Biarritz on 8 Oct. 1865. Another entry by Eugénie is on fol. 27r, and there are further entries by her son on fol. 21r and 27r (with a little drawing). - Two other noteworthy entries are on pages 21v and 23v: the first is by Bismarck, who signed in Biarritz on the 19th of October 1865, the very month when the secret negotiations between Prussia and France had begun over possibly coalitions before the Austro-Prussian War of 1866. The second, written at about the same time, is by Leopold, Prince of Hohenzollern and his wife Antonia (fol. 23v). Leopold is considered a pawn of the high politics of his age. In 1870 Bismarck would urge him to accept the Spanish Crown, a move fiercely opposed by Napoléon III. Brauner Kalbslederband der Zeit mit reicher Rücken- und Deckelvergoldung und umlaufendem Goldschnitt. Vorsätze in zeitgenöss. Kleisterpapier. Qu.-8vo (175 x 104 mm). Hübsches Album des in Jena studierenden "F.W.S." (so am Vorderdeckel geprägt), in das sich 71 Kommilitonen eingetragen haben. Besonders erwähnenswert sind die hübschen Gouachen, die wohl alle von demselben Künstler stammen und u. a. studentische Szenen (Einzug zu Pferd und in Karossen, nächtliche Versammlungen), ein "Memento mori" mit einem Mönch in einer Klause, Landschaften und Allegorien auf die Tugend zeigen. - Der hübsche Einband mit Rocaille- und Gittermuster nur gering berieben, beschabt und bestoßen; am Hinterdeckel die geprägte Jahreszahl 1756; innen stellenweise leicht fleckig; S. 1 mit photographischem Exlibris eines Walter Amon.

Das Album einer/s unbekannten Reisenden bereiste rund zehn Jahre lang die Niederlande, Deutschland und die Schweiz und versammelt mehr als 300 Einträge auf Niederländisch und Deutsch, gelegentlich auch auf Englisch und Französisch. Zwei Notenzeilen (9v und 22r) und 18 Zeichnungen (12r, 15r, 16v, 18r, 23v, 24v, 25r, 25v, 30v, 32r, 32v, 33r, 36v, 41r, 52r, 55v, 58r und 61r) lockern die teils recht eng beieinander getätigten Eintragungen optisch ein wenig auf. An indenture detailing the exchange of lands between the crown and Thomas, 4th Duke of Norfolk, signed three times by the Queen, recording that the Duke will "sell geve and graunte unto our Soveraigne Ladie the Quene All those his Mannors & Lordshippes of Chesworth and Sedgewicke [...] in the County of Sussex [...] also all that mannor Lordshipp and Forest of St Leonard and all ground and Soyle of the same Forest And also all those his Parkes of Bewbushe and Shelley", and related lands and rights, in exchange for lands in royal gift including the "Celle of Sainte Leonard in her county of Norfolk" and associated lands and buildings "neare unto the Citie of Norwich", Norfolk lands formerly of Wymondham Abbey, lands in Essex (Wigborough, Saltcote, Tollesbury) that were formerly "assigned to the late Ladie Anne of Cleves" and also lands in "Pitchesey" (Pitsea) in the same county, the manor of Dowdike in Lincolnshire (previously of Crowland Abbey), and lands of Newenham Abbey in Devon. The indenture then lists the extensive debts of the Duke to the crown, further detailing that a portion of this debt is discharged by the value of the woodland hereby sold to the crown, and commands the exchequer to produce a new bond for the residue of the debt, being a mere £1823 15s. 5 3/4d. Signed by the Queen at the head of each membrane, additionally signed at the foot by the Lord Treasurer William Paulet, Marquess of Winchester ("Winchester"), the under-treasurer Richard Sackville, and the Chancellor of the Exchequer Walter Mildmay. - Thomas Howard, 4th Duke of Norfolk (1538-72), was the head of the powerful Howard family. He was a Privy Councillor, had commanded English forces in Scotland at the beginning of Elizabeth's reign, and was one of the greatest land-owners in the land, with estates centred on Norfolk. The agreement with the crown that is formalized in this document saw enormous tracts of land near Horsham in Sussex - including the 12 square miles of St Leonard's forest - conveyed to the crown. Norfolk gained considerable land in return, primarily former monastic land scattered across four counties, but - and this was probably of greater importance to him - he also saw his overall debt to the crown, which had been more that £6500, reduced by some £4680. The counterpart of this indenture remains in the Exchequer (The National Archives, E 211/39). Less than ten years after this agreement was made, Norfolk was executed for treason for conspiring with Mary, Queen of Scots. His son and heir, Philip, Earl of Arundel, was permitted to inherit most of his estates.

Armee mobil gemacht wird; uns trifft das natürlich mit [...] Ich bin auf Alles gefaßt u. guten Muthes dabei [...] Der junge Borsig ist auch in meiner Compagnie, mit ihm war ich auch oft zusammen [...] Ich hoffe wir werden bald avanciren, u. es dann etwas besser haben. France avec qui on compte toujours à Moscou pourrait peut-être encore peser sur la balance dans un sens inverse […]". - Together with Lenin, Julius Martov founded the League of Struggle for the Emancipation of the Working Class in 1895, one of the first Russian workers' organizations. Arrested in December 1895, he was banished to Siberia from 1897 and 1900. In December 1900 he co-founded the party journal "Iskra" ("Spark"), which he edited until 1901, when he emigrated to Germany. From 1903 onwards Martov served as leader of the Mensheviks in the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party; his faction advocated reforms and a representative democracy, rather than the revolution favoured by the Bolsheviks. During the Revolution of 1905 Martov was a leader of the workers' Soviet; in 1907 he once more went into exile, only to return to Russia once more from 1917 to 1920. After a fierce altercation with Lenin over the Red Terror he turned his back on Russia for good, criticizing Bolshevist politics as the "dictatorship of a minority".

Hochinteressante Dokumentsammlung aus dem Nachlass des französischen Diplomaten Louis Guy Henri de Valory (Valori), der 1739 als französischer Gesandter an den preußischen Hof kam und dort bis 1750 wirkte, dann 1756 kurzfristig als Botschafter nach Berlin zurückkehrte. Der greise Kardinal und de-facto-Premierminister André Hercule de Fleury hatte den Offizier Valory, der sich im Spanischen Erbfolgekrieg ausgezeichnet hatte, nach Preußen geschickt, um am Hofe Friedrich Wilhelms I. die Interessen von Louis XV. zu vertreten; insbesondere sollte er das französisch-preußische Bündnis gegen das Habsburgerreich festigen. Valory entledigte sich seiner Mission erfolgreich: Er wirkte mehrfach auf die preußische Bündnispolitik ein, arrangierte die Ehe zwischen dem Dauphin und Maria Josepha von Sachsen (1747) und zählt zu den Architekten des Friedens von Aachen (1748). Obwohl der Kronprinz Friedrich zunächst wenig von Valory hielt, fand er bald Gefallen an dem so gebildeten wie originellen Kopf, und nach seiner Thronbesteigung als Friedrich II. bezeugte er ihm mehrmals seine Freundschaft. - Zu den vorliegend überlieferten zehn Schreiben Friedrichs des Großen zählen zwei eigenhändige Billetts (davon eines im Umfang von 3 Seiten); ein weiteres weist eine sechszeilige eigenhändige Nachschrift auf (während Friedrichs Bevollmächtigung für Heinrich Graf Podewils zu einem preußisch-französischen Defensivbündnis neben der Unterschrift das wohlerhaltene königliche Lacksiegel trägt). Die meisten dieser Schriftstücke stammen aus dem ersten Jahr des Ersten Schlesischen Kriegs, mehrere sind in Feldlagern verfasst. Bei Valorys Abschied aus Berlin 1750 spricht ihm Friedrich mit warmen Ausdrücken seine Zufriedenheit aus, und bei seiner abrupten Abberufung 1756 widmet er ihm mit eigener Hand die persönlichen Worte: "Après la façon outrageante dont votre cour se comporte envers moi, vous ne trouverez point étrange que je ne réponds point au ministre de France, mais à mon vieil ami. Je suis fâché de votre départ, et vous pouvez être persuadé que je ferai non seulement des vœux pour votre santé, mais encore pour votre fortune. Faites mes compliments à mes amis dans le pays où vous allez, si j'en ai encore. Pour moi, je vois toutes les extravagances qui arrivent, de sang froid, et vous pouvez être persuadé que, bien loin d'en être découragé, ce m'est un nouvel aiguillon qui m'animera à faire l'impossible possible l'année qui vient. Adieu, mon cher Valory, je vous souhaite un heureux voyage. Federic". - Von Minister Podewils liegen sechs teils eigenhändige Schreiben an Valory vor, die von September 1741 bis kurz vor Ausbruch des Zweiten Schlesischen Kriegs reichen. Von französischer Seite enthält der Bestand acht vom König von Frankreich unterschriebene Instruktionen an seinen Gesandten, ferner acht Schreiben Fleurys und eine Fülle weiterer diplomatischer Korrespondenz. Viele Dokumente zur Großmachtpolitik der 1740er bis 1750er Jahre finden sich in zeitgenössischer Abschrift, darunter Verträge und Abkommen, Urkunden Maria Theresias (November 1740), Schreiben des englischen Botschafters Hyndford sowie der berühmte Brief Friedrichs des Großen an den Marquis d'Argens aus Hermannsdorf vom 27. August 1760, aber auch zwei Schreiben der preußischen Königinmutter Sophie Dorothea von Hannover zur Heirat der Prinzessin Luise Ulrike mit dem schwedischen Kronprinzen (1744). Eine Vielzahl älterer Schreiben von Kurfürsten und deutschen regierenden Häusern an das französische Königshaus, verfasst zwischen 1570 und 1632, dürfte Valory nach seiner Rückkehr nach Frankreich in sein Arbeitsarchiv übernommen haben. Angereichert ist die Sammlung um einige spätere Stücke aus dem Besitz der Familie Boyer d'Eguilles (Billetts von Friedrich Wilhelm II., 1795/96). Valory hatte in Preußen Kontakt zur Familie; 1746/47 hatte er sich für die Freilassung von Alexandre-Jean-Baptiste d'Eguilles, Bruder des Marquis d'Argens, aus englischer Kriegsgefangenschaft eingesetzt. Der vorliegende Bestand bildet über weite Strecken die Quellengrundlage für die 1820 erschienenen Memoiren Valorys (Mémoires des négociations du marquis de Valori), in der auch wesentliche Teile publiziert sind. - Residuum der Sammlung Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872). Schöne und umfangreiche diplomatische Dokumentensammlung, die das preußisch-französische Verhältnis in den letzten Jahren vor dem "Renversement des alliances" abbildet.

[Ritter Midgets].
Gruss der Emil Ritter'schen Liliputaner Gesellschaft zum Geburtstag des Alt-Reichskanzlers. No place, [1895].
Calligraphy in black and red ink on drawing cardboard (56,5 x 68,4 cm), matted (63 x 79 cm). A homage to Otto von Bismarck (1815-98) on the occasion of his 80th birthday, paid by Emil Ritter's troupe of performing dwarfs. Bismarck had been forced to resign as chancellor of the German Empire five years previously, and the aged statesman was fighting to shape his image for posterity. After a vote to send him a congratulatory birthday telegram had fallen through in the Reichstag, where Bismarck enjoyed little support, some 400 German cities immediately declared him an honorary citizen - a prelude to the Bismarck mania that would seize Germany after his death three years later. The present congratulatory address contains the signatures, birthdays, and sizes (between 70 and 120 cms) of all members of the troupe. One of the best-known and most expensize dwarf acts of the time, they also enjoyed considerable fame and success in America, where they were billed as "The Ritter Midgets". - Corners bumped; some duststaining and foxing.

Two pages (207:300 mm). 14 bars on one six-stave system (bars 51-64 of the published edition) for voice, bass, two horns and strings, the text for the aria "Sono le femmine si maliziose [...] nessun per certo le troverà". A fragment of Haydn's "Dice Benissimo". Haydn composed two insertion arias for Antonio Salieri’s dramma giocoso of 1778, "La scuola de' gelosi": one is lost to us, while the present manuscript is a fragment of the aria created for the bass voice of the manservant Lumaca. One of Haydn's many responsibilities as Kapellmeister of the Esterházy family - by 1780 under Nikolaus I - was as director of the opera company, his patron's newest passion as of the mid-1770s. Esterháza Palace was transformed, at the behest of Prince Nikolaus, into an important fixture on the opera calendar, with its theatre routinely hosting multiple productions each year. Not only would Haydn direct and produce the performances, but he would compose his own works, as well as adapting those of other composers - usually choosing dramma giocoso - to suit the forces at his disposal. This often meant composing insertion arias - such as the present work - to suit the voice of a particular singer: around twenty such arias survive, dating from 1777 to 1789, although only a handful are written for bass or tenor. - Remnants of tape at upper, left-hand and bottom margins of recto. Provenance: Professor Theodor Dielitz (presentation and authentication inscription; Dielitz's substantial autograph collection was auctioned by Hartung in Berlin in January 1858), given to a Dr. Pribil as a duplicate, 1 January 1848. Last in the Metropolitan Opera Guild Collection. Not in Hoboken.

Ich bin in Zurückreise von Paris nach Warschau mit Grazyna. Schade daß ich Dich nicht wiedersehen kann. Ich habe Wien wie immer sehr hübsch gefunden. Wir wohnen jetzt in Warschau in eigenem Haus, die neue Adresse: [...] Ich möchte immer wieder gern nach Wien kommen wenn Du für mich ein kleines 'Job' hättest. Auch gern möchten wir Dich mit deiner Frau in Warschau bei uns als Gäste zu sehen [...]". - The Polish jazz musician and composer Matuszkiewicz is regarded as a pioneer of the post-World War II jazz movement in Poland. From 1950 to 1958 he was the leader of the well-known Polish jazz group, Melomani. Throughout 1964 he performed both inside and outside of Poland. Since 1965 he has mainly produced music for films and commercials.

Oblong 8vo. Autograph musical manuscript. 95 pp. (notes in four lines; pp. 96-260 empty systems only), 6 unnumbered leaves of index. Contemporary calf monogrammed in gilt "J. G. N. 1785" on upper cover. Edges sprinkled in red. A rediscovered late work: apparently the final, never completed and never published collection of 78 preludes for Protestant church songs by the highly esteemed J. G. Nicolai (cf. ADB XXIII, 593), who served as the organist at Rudolstadt for nearly forty years. The book must have served him to write down newly composed choral preludes as they were occasioned by the ecclesiastical year. The manuscript begins with "Nun komm der Heiden Heiland" for the first Sunday in Advent; Christmastime includes chorals such as "Vom Himmel hoch, da komm ich her", "In dulci jubilo", and "O Jesulein süß"; Passiontide includes "O Lamm Gottes unschuldig", "Da Jesu an dem Kreuze stund" and "O Mensch bewein dein Sünde groß". For Easter, Nicolai wrote preludes to "Christ lag in Todesbanden", "Christ ist erstanden" and "Heut' triumphieret Gottes Sohn", for Pentecost to "Komm heiliger Geist" and "Der heilige Geist hernieder". The abrupt end of the manuscript after "Nun laßt uns Gott dem Herren Dank sagen" (19th Sunday after Trinity) is undoubtedly due to the composer's final illness; the last Sundays of the ecclesiastical year are missing, though the lines of the systems have been inked in. - It cannot be determined whether the present series was intended for publication. Nicolai did publish several such collections of preludes, but this might just as well constitute a personal compilation for his own use at church services, as suggested by occasional abbreviated parts with varied figuration, likely indicating improvisation. Nicolai had already published many of the chorals for which we here find preludes in his "Vollständiges Choralbuch über die Fürstlich Schwarzburg-Rudolstädtischen Kirchengesänge" (Leipzig: Breitkopf, 1765). The attribution of the volume is secured by the cover monogram and the watermark (crowned double-headed eagle with the insignia of the Empire, based on the arms of the Princes of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt). - Binding slightly rubbed and bumped; some worming to lower cover; insignificant browning to interior. Cf. MGG IX, 1452.
