This noted investment banker became the University of Pennsylvania's first president in 1930 serving until 1944; his son Thomas Jr. served as U.S. secretary of defense from 1959 to 1961. TDS mimeographed 4pp rectos only 8�" X 11" Philadelphia PA 1937 October 18. Near fine. Mild overall age toning; small staple hole at upper left of each page. Titled simply "Address of Dr. Thomas S. Gates President of the University over the radio" this typed double-spaced mimeograph copy was issued by the "University of Pennsylvania Bicentennial Committee" and begins: "This is one of the great occasions of my life. I want. to express my gratitude to the Bicentennial Committee for giving me this opportunity to talk to each of you personally about the present and future of the University." This inspired pep talk appears to have been this committee's creation of the "Bicentennial Fund" which spearheaded fundraising efforts in preparation for the university's 200th anniversary in 1940. Gates discusses the need "to get and keep the best" educators to boost scholarships "for outstanding students who will be the kind of leaders in thought and activity that our democracy needs" to build a new museum laboratory and library etc. At the conclusion he signs boldly in full in black ink. A superb unusual memento from the notable moment in University of Pennsylvania history. Only a modest number of these mimeograph copies would have been produced in the first place and of these surely an even smaller number survive. And of these remaining copies how many are actually signed Our considered guess is that you're looking at it. From the collection of noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar and possibly relative ARNOLD F. Chatty note to a long-time correspondent mentioning a recent vacation "Florida was sunny windy so very cold. Bermuda was cold windy & rainy -- I picked up a chest bug." and her portrait on her latest book: "They rearranged it a bit but you can see a small double frame on it. My husband's pictures & also some of the grandchildren. Gladys Taber no doubt gave me the cranberry glass mug cigarettes & the footed milk glass holds pens. I'm sure that's her picture across room -- much foreshortened. There's a big table there by the bookwall her picture is on it & others." Always interesting when author's describe their work space. With original envelope addressed in Baldwin's hand. Accompanied by a 12mo 5" X 7�" 23pp promotional booklet issued by her publisher Farrar & Rinehart an essay titled "Faith Baldwin and Her American Family" by Page Cooper. This legendary California commercial artist headed the Muirson Label Company for a half century; he created the original artwork for the 1988 U.S. "Carreta 1770s" stamp. Signed pseudo-First Day Cover 5�" X 3�" n.p. 1988 August 30. Near fine. Not actually a postally cancelled First Day Cover but a special cover created by the artist himself and hand labeled "First Day of Issue Aug. 30 88." Two 7.6-cent "Carreta1770s" stamps at upper right. At left are two small line drawings of carretas printed in brown ink and the verso is filled with a line drawing captioned "Circa 1800-1850 Californios Rode in Carretas / Crude Wooden Two-Wheeled Carts Drawn by Oxen" also printed in brown ink. Above this drawing the artist pens "Paul -- Used this scene on a cachet. / RR." Rambo pens the two "R"s back to back the second one in reverse so the result looks like a cattle brand. On the front side in the address portion at right Rambo addresses this to Paul Johnston though it was neither mailed nor postally cancelled and in the message portion at left he writes "Paul / Drew this up just / for the celebration. / Ralph Rambo / RR / Used the scene on / reverse on a cachet." A most unusual non-First Day Cover -- though hand labeled "First Day Cover" by the stamp's artist! unknown

Scotch tape stain at each corner. Accompanied by a superb 9�" X 7�" glossy scene from the 1971 film "How to Frame a Figg" showing a squealing Knotts at the ball carousel in a bowling alley.
