‎WILLARD Clarence E. ? ?‎

‎Signed Broadside‎

‎In the "Just Plain Weird" category consider the man who from about 1925 on baffled the medical and scientific community with his ability to GROW. That's right this famed sideshow performer appeared to grow inches taller on stage -- hence his nickname "The Man Who Grows Before Your Eyes." Through the 1950s Willard continued to amaze and confound appearing on shows such as "The Ed Sullivan Show" 6 April 1958. What he signs here is as off-the-wall as what he did: a folded-down promotional broadside single sheet printed recto and verso 27" X 18" folds down to 9" X 6 3/4" Grand Rapids MI n.y. ca. 1934 or earlier. Near fine. The front panel which reads "The / Complete / Refrigerator / LEONARD / a name with more than a half / century of / REFRIGERATION BACKGROUND" in bold orange and black bears his handsome large inscription in a blank area: "Clarence E. Willard / 'The Man Who Grows' / 1934." Unfolded the broadside features numerous illustrations with captions front and back touting this product. Superb clean condition with no edgewear whatsoever and no weakness along the original fold lines. Scarce and unusual -- as weird as it gets. unknown‎

‎MULLEN Chester A. ? ?‎

‎Signed Postal Cover‎

‎This American sailor who served during World War Two lays claim to fame as being one of very few living persons ever pictured on a U.S. stamp -- his smiling visage appears among a group of swabbies pictured on the U.S. three-cent stamp issued in 1945 titled "U.S. Navy" Signed Postal Cover 6" X 3" n.p. n.y. Fine. NOT a First Day Cover but simply an envelope bearing a mint copy of this stamp neither addressed nor mailed. Across the center large and bold Mullen signs in black medium-point marker. Original transmittal envelope cancelled in Des Moines Iowa on 13 February 1976 also present -- as is a small article from a philatelic newspaper undated but circa 1976 picturing this stamp and a "To the Editor" letter from three of Mullen's grandchildren pointing out that the Iwo Jima flagraisers were not the only living persons pictured on a U.S. stamp. Mullen appears at the upper right corner of the group of sailors captured on this stamp his cap cocked jauntily. Highly unusual -- a fun little piece of philatelic history. unknown‎

‎The younger brother of poet William Cullen Bryant was an Illinois poet farmer politician and newspaper editor; his books of verse include "Poems Written from Youth to Old Age 1824-1884" 1885 and "The Life and Poems of John Howard Bryant" 1894. AQS 1p 5" X 8" Princeton Illinois 1895 May 20. Very good. Faint bit of age toning. Stanza from a poem handsomely penned in brown ink in old age: "There is no breath of common air / No ray of light from Star or Sun / No Shade of beauty anywhere; / But whispers of the Almighty One" nicely signed in full. Bryant does not identify it but this is the penultimate stanza from his poem "The Streams of Life" which appears on pages 227-28 of the "Life and Poems" volume published the year before he penned this excerpt. From the collection of University of Chicago geology professor Albert Johannsen 1871-1962 author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" 1950 the definitive reference work on the subject. ‎GLASGOW Charles ? ?‎

‎Photograph Signed‎

‎English maker of miniatures. PS 7" X 8" n.p. 1935 September 26. Near fine. An unusual transportation-related item printed on thin glazed stock this photograph bears a 4-line printed caption on the lower margin: "ROYAL POLO CART / Princess Mary Driving in the Park. / Model Built by / CHARLES GLASGOW Coach Builder PAISLEY." Above this appears a superbly-detailed miniature carriage driven by a woman in fashionable riding gear with a single white horse pulling. Above this set within an oval frame is the elderly Glasgow in suit and Derby hat. Near the caption Glasgow boldly signs and dates it. The occasion for the issuance of this is uncertain but probably ties in with the lavish 1935 Silver Jubilee celebrations of George V -- perhaps an exhibit of miniatures depicting the royal family at different times of their lives. Princess Mary 1867-1953 married the future king in 1893. Most unusual. unknown‎

‎Perhaps a War of 1812 veteran. perhaps an attorney. perhaps a bureaucrat -- perhaps all of the above! ALS 2pp 8" X 10" Rutland VT 1818 May 16. Addressed to Robert Brent Pay Master General of the U.S. Army. Very good. Mild age toning. Good content appeal on behalf of the wife of a War of 1812 substitute soldier who died in battle. Reads in part: "There are in this vicinity two or three instances where persons served in the detached militia from this state in 1812 as substitutes whose names do not appear on the roll they having answered to the names of those who were drafted. These persons died in the service leaving widows. the widows claims for 5 years half pay is admissable as making proof of their services. permit me to remark in their behalf. it would be extremely unjust to exclude a claim merely because the officer should improperly suffer the name of the drafted man to remain upon the roll." Very interesting discussion of the dilemma of widows of substitute soldiers. unknown‎

‎KLINE Burton ? ?‎

‎Typed Letter Signed / Autograph Manuscript Signed‎

‎Though little is known about this American writer he had a following as a horror and sci-fi writer of such short stories as "The Caller in the Night" 1917 and other oft-anthologized ghost tales; his "In the Open Code" appeared in "The Best Short Stories of 1918" and he also published novels such as "The End of the Flight" 1917 and "Gallant Rogue" 1921. Two items: First a TLS 1p 8" X 11" New York NY 1923 March 2. Addressed to Professor Albert Johannsen author of "The House of Beadle and Adams and Its Dime and Nickel Novels" University of Oklahoma Press 1950 the definitive reference work and bibliography on the subject. Near fine. "I feel truly honored by your wish to include something of mine in your collection of autographs and manuscripts" he begins. "If the scribble I am sending you is not to your taste you must let me know. My book manuscripts are the property of the publishers and magazine editors never save or return the 'copy' of stories; hence this scrap from an unfinished yarn is the only thing at hand." Second is the accompanying "scrap" -- labeled "Rough draft" in red pencil at the upper left in Kline's hand -- which is titled "Sunk Without a Trace" and is an AMS 1p 8" X 11" n.p. n.y. Near fine. It consists of one very full page of bold and legible text beginning: "On the 15th of every March I regularly receive a line from my friend Dr. Carver. Regularly his letter commands me to dine with him at the ___ Club on the 21st of the month. This annual feast has become a fixture between us. The dinner is not to herald the technical and sometimes the actual arrival of Spring. It is to celebrate it may be the fourth the sixth -- this year it was the seventh -- anniversary of Dr. Carver's divorce." Could become a horror tale -- but in any case it's an attractive and interesting rough draft example that makes you want to read more. Also present is Johannsen's original 8" X 11" file folder bearing a printed "Collection of Albert Johannsen" label partly filled in by Johannsen. unknown‎

‎BRULATOUR Jules E. 1870 1946‎

‎Autograph Note Signed‎

‎One of the other possible inspirations for Charles Foster Kane in Orson Welles' "Citizen Kane" was this pioneering American silent film producer and all-around tycoon. Brief ANS 1p 7" X 6" Paris France 1920 OR "1930" July 17. Addressed to Irving Schwerke 1893-1975 American expatriate pianist and music critic. Fine. On embossed red letterhead of the hotel "George V" Brulatour notes: "Your write up was marvelous & we are very grateful to you. We would be so happy if you would come over Friday and dine with us We will have two friends from home. We will go to the Folles Bergere afterwards." Although the date of this letter is debatable surprisingly either option makes perfect sense. If dated 1920 this letter is quite intriguing for Brulatour's second wife was singer actress and "Titanic" survivor Dorothy Gibson 1889-1946 for whom Brulatour left his first wife and married in 1917. The first Mrs. Brulatour managed to get get their union annulled as invalid in 1919 -- after which according to one source "a humiliated Dorothy Gibson left New York shortly thereafter to live in relative peace and anonymity in Paris." This letter appears to prove that Brulatour followed her there perhaps to help reestablish her singing career. She had appeared in some Metropolitan Opera House productions in the teens and Schwerke appears to have favorably reviewed a singing appearance she made in Paris. Their post-marriage dalliance did not last however for Brulatour married silent film actress Hope Hampton 1897-1982 in 1923 a union that lasted until his death. If this letter is dated 1930 -- the more likely scenario -- it's still quite interesting for Hampton's film career died with the silent films and her husband bought her way into opera. She debuted with the Philadelphia Grand Opera in 1928 to disastrous reviews and in 1930 was touring in a production of Massenet's "Manon." Schwerke might easily have seen Hampton's performance and reviewed it in one of the music publications of the day. In either case a superb example of this uncommon autograph. unknown‎

‎HAPGOOD Norman 1868 1937‎

‎Typed Letter Signed‎

‎This editor and writer edited the hugely popular "Collier's Weekly" 1903-12 and "Harper's Weekly" 1913-16 and became so highly regarded he was named U.S. minister to Denmark in 1919; his books include biographies of American statesman such as George Washington Daniel Webster and Abraham Lincoln. TLS 1p 5" X 8" New York NY 1912 April 18. Addressed to George Ade 1866-1944 American humorist and playwright. Near fine. "Are you going to the conventions at Chicago and Baltimore" writes Hapgood on "Collier's" letterhead referring to the Republican and Democratic National Conventions. "If so what would you think of Collier's as a medium for your impressions I am sure McCutcheon or anyone else you might prefer would be glad to work with you. If you will consider this idea at all I should like to know also how much you would charge. I expect to be at both conventions myself and should much enjoy seeing you." The letter is docketed by Ade himself: at the upper left in his large distinctive hand he pencils a huge "A / ans" to note he had replied. Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist John T. McCutcheon was a Purdue University classmate of Ade's and a lifelong pal as well as illustrator of Ade's "Chicago Record" daily feature "Stories of the Streets and of the Town" in the 1890s. Hapgood's solicitation paid off for while Ade apparently did not attend the convention at his then-hometown of Chicago he did attend the Baltimore convention and in the 13 July 1912 issue of "Collier's" his article "The Baltimore Affair from Three Angles" appeared see Dorothy Ritter Russo's "A Bibliography of George Ade" page 232. An interesting piece. unknown‎
