The pen-and-ink sketch shows a man's face and hand as well as a child in profile gazing at its own outstretched hand. - A renowned portraitist, landscape and genre painter, Groeber directed the nude painting class at the Munich Academy of Arts from 1907, and was especially talented in portraying larger groups of people, earning him the commission to paint the 12-people directorate of the "I.G. Farben", the largest chemical and pharmaceutical company of the time, in 1926. - Self-addressed by the collector on the reverse. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - One of Munich's leading genre painters in the second half of the 19th century and an avid art collector, Grützner specialized in painting scenes of monastic life which earned him the byname "Mönchmaler", and repeatedly portrayed the Shakespeare character Sir John Falstaff. - Traces of a postmark. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - After working for several Norwegian magazines, Gulbransson moved to Munich in 1902 and became a leading artist for the satirical magazine "Simplicissimus". He created illustrations for childrens' books including "Es war einmal" in 1934, and produced caricatures against the Allies, in particular against Winston Churchill, during the Second World War. - Small ink spots near upper left corner. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Making a name for himself as a decorative artist during the new construction of the Berlin Reichstag under Paul Wallot, Gussmann started teaching in Dresden in 1897 and opened a master studio for decorative painting in 1910. His main works include the interior decoration of the new city hall and the Café Central in Dresden as well as the Eisenach Burschenschaftsdenkmal. - Traces of a postmark. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Strongly influenced by the French Realists and associated with the artists' group "Glasgow Boys", Guthrie lived most of his life in the Scottish Borders, where he created some of his most important works, including "A Hind's Daughter" in 1883. He was commissioned to paint a group portrait of 17 politicians and statesmen of Britain and its allies in 1919, resulting in the painting "Statesmen of World War I" which he finished shortly before his death. - Small flaw to upper margin. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Creating his first painting "Ährenlesende Ruth und Boas" during his time as an officer in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, Habermann was admitted to the Munich Academy of Fine Arts the following year and joined the artists' association "Allotria" in 1880. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - Starting out as a student of the sculptor Benedikt König (1842-1906) at the age of only six, Habich won a prize for his Columbus Monument for Bremerhaven in Munich in 1897 and joined the Darmstadt artists' colony in 1899, creating several monuments and sculptures in the city before being appointed professor at the Academy of Arts in Stuttgart. - A few small ink spots. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A founding member of the Vienna Secession, Hänisch made his debut at the 1891 annual exhibition of the Wiener Künstlerhaus with his oil painting "Klostergarten im Herbst". He exhibited his works throughout Germany as well as in Rome, Amsterdam and at the 1900 Paris World Fair. - A few small ink spots and a small brown stain near lower right corner; traces of small folds near corners. Inscribed to the German dermatologist Alwin Scharlau. - A member of the Glasgow School, Hamilton, who specialized in landscape painting, won a gold medal at the 1897 Munich International Exhibition, which led to several overseas commissions, including one from Victor Emmanuel III of Italy. His work was shown in the British Pavillon at the Venice Biennale at all eight exhibitions between 1897 and 1910. - Signed twice. Several small creases and ink spots. With a full signature as well as his initials. - Inspired by study trips to the Alps and the British Isles as well as by his connections to German nobility, Harrach applied himself to landscape painting as well as portraiture. His experiences during the Franco-Prussian War as well as the death of four of his eight children prompted him to turn towards historical and religious motifs in his later career. - Traces of a small fold near lower left corner; traces of a postmark near right margin.
