About The Author : William Gilbert Grace (1848–1915) was an English amateur cricketer who was important in the development of the sport and is widely considered one of its greatest players. He played first class cricket for a record-equalling 44 seasons, from 1865 to 1908, during which he captained England, Gloucestershire, the Gentlemen, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), the United South of England Eleven (USEE), and several other teams. Grace was notoriously unscholarly.His first schooling was with a Miss Trotman in downend village and then with a Mr Curtis of Winterbourne. Grace never went to university because his father wanted him to pursue a medical career. But Grace was approached by both Oxford University Cricket Club and Cambridge University Cricket Club. Grace himself had much to say about how to play cricket in his two books Cricket (1891) and Reminiscences (1899), both of which were ghost-written. Vintage photo-illustrated postcard of the girls baseball team. No date c. 1911. Eleven uniformed girls pose for a team photograph. 3.5 x 5.5 inches. The Western Bloomer Girls were founded in 1911 by Maud Nelson a renowned pitcher in her own right. "Bloomer Girl" baseball teams of women were formed starting in the 1890s taking their name from Amelia Bloomer who designed loose fitting trousers that women wore while playing sports. Bloomer Girls teams rarely played each other but traveled across America challenging local amateur and minor league men's teams. Bloomer Girls were disciplined sportswomen and frequently won games with their solid skills and competitive spirits. Interestingly these "Boomer Girl" teams were integrated when it came to gender; while most of the players were women each roster had at least one male player. Fine copy in custom blue cloth clamshell box. Illustrated from photographs by R.B. Thompson. 75 pp. 1 vols. 4to. FDR's visit to the Galapagos with Sailfishing at Cocos Island. The very scarce printed memorial printed on board the ship of FDR's Third Presidential Cruise on the USS Houston from the July 14 to August 9 1938 on his way to the Galapagos Islands FDR was the first U.S. President to visit them. In the introduction to the booklet one of the editors records that "Shortly after the cruise commenced certain members of the HOUSTON personnel conceived the idea of publishing a book which would relate graphically all of the interesting incidents happening on board our ship. We trust that the following pages will keep alive fond memories of a happy cruise with as grand a shipmate it has ever been our privilege to meet." There are numerous photos of Roosevelt with the crew and the Presidential party shots of the Galapagos and its strange fauna and a good deal of wit and raillery in the text and photos directed toward the "pollywogs" on the part of the "shellbacks" in anticipation of the approaching traditional ceremony of "crossing the line." The ship called at Cocos Island and the log records successful sport fishing for sailfish in those waters. The U.S.S. Houston was sunk during the war. A wonderfully light-hearted and very scarce piece for the FDR collector at a time when the clouds of a world war were gathering on the horizon.
