Illustrated promotional brochure for the Roosevelt Hunting Club "the largest sport and recreational organization in the world controlling three great hunting and fishing preserves - a million acres in New Mexico Arizona and Old Mexico. The Sport paradise of the continent."<br/><br/>The club had plans prepared by El Paso architects Trost & Trost for a clubhouse in Truth or Consequences formerly Hot Springs Sierra County New Mexico but the club seems to have had no existence beyond the captions of the romantic illustrations in this pamphlet. It was a scheme promoted by J. C. Harper sometime pool hall operator of Deming New Mexico who attempted to secure the consent of Governor Dillon of New Mexico through the offer of a position on the board. Harper was linked to a failed Kansas City bank.<br/><br/>Apparently unrecorded. unknown books

Westwood and Satchell list this work similiar to that of Thomas Best's A Concise Treatise on the Art of Angling London 1787 without authorial attribution. The words "but Comprehensive" in the title suggest that this was intended as a sequel to Best a popular work which went into numerous editions. <br/>The words "embellished with a frontispiece" have been effaced from the title page suggesting that for a long time this copy has been lacking the plate as also in the copy retained at Yale. Lavishly produced record of a sporting trip to Yellowstone takes the form of the diary of Detroit industrialist Carl Schmidt including a section on fishing. Chapter 9 pp. 63-72 is entitled "A Fishing Trip." The color pictures are photochrome prints after photographs by William Henry Jackson who as the official photographer of the Hayden Survey in the 1870s took the first photographs of Yellowstone. The photochrome process was invented in Switzerland and the American rights were purchased by the Detroit Publishing Company around 1895. Jackson served as a director of the newly-created Photochrome Company subsidiary and praised the photochrome process in his memoirs as a "process hardly improved today."<br/><br/>The uncommon second edition of this unusual western title with the black and white illustrations printed with the text. Testimony and proceedings in this trespassing trial concerning the Monroe county fishing club the Pohoqualine Fish Association. Much is elicited in testimony concerning the club lands along McMichael's Creek fishing habits and customs of members and efforts to protect the stream from overfishing. During the testimony the legailty of of the use of a landing net to catch trout was questioned by the defense. The second portion of the book concerns a case brought against the club president and another member for using a landing net while fishing with a light rod and a fly; the conviction was reversed.<br/>Pp. 185-200 comprise citations from angling works from Berners and Walton and the Anglers Vade Mecum of 1700 to the 1890 edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.<br/>Uncommon. Sizes mostly about 3-3/4" x 6" a few slightly smaller. Uncaptioned. 1 vols. Oblong 8vo. The album depicts a young man in his mid-teens and an older man perhaps his father fishing from both a river bank and from a boat and them proudly displaying their catch another of them with guns and a dog as well as a few photos of their faithful hound. A nice little album with pleasing mid-century images of fishing. Some of the images are date-stamped August 1941 and all are contemporary to 1941 with one earlier image of the Pawtucket Railroad station dated in 1880 loosely inserted. unknown books

Letter from the young grand-daughter of geographer Jedidiah Morse and niece of telegraph inventor Samuel F.B.Morse to her teenaged brother describing the act of British born Antonio "Signor" Blitz 1810-1877 perhaps the best known magician in the US before the Civil War.<br/><br/>".Miss Apthorp told us that she was going to take us to see Signor Blitz a juggler and ventriloquist.First he brought out a little wooden doll and a cloak on him and made him disappear and then made him come back again. He put an ivory ball in his mouth and pretended to swallow it; then he pulled from his mouth first a long piece of red ribbon; then yellow blue green and white. He brought out his canary birds and two or three ring doves; he made one of the canaries draw a little waggon and two of them swung in a seat while two others swung above them one pretended to sleep with little torches all around it and the funniest of all was one who came out all dressed in a cloak and hat just like a little soldier on a wooden horse and another fired off a little cannon; the wooden horse fell and the Colonel pretended to be dead. Signor Blitz showed a wooden man whom he called Bobby and pretended he spoke; of course Signor Blitz spoke for him."<br/><br/>Blitz arrived in America in 1834 and quickly rose to popularity; at the height of his fame there were some dozen other magicians operating under his name.
